I am Otomi! From Central Mexico. I grew up in South Carolina i have only seen 1 Navajo family and very few "Cherokee" or mixed people ... I am proud of being Native American
It depends on their teachings. Some say 365 (one for each day of the year), some say 366 (one for each day of the year plus one for the dancer), others say to use as many as necessary to get the good sound. It also depends on the dancer.
Jingle dress comes from the ojibwe people. Without the fan is the original teaching and way we danced. Over time we adapted what is called “contemporary” style of dancing. It’s peoples choice to dance with or without the fan. Old style jingle keeps their feet low to the ground, don’t walk backwards, doesn’t wear leggings, and doesn’t spin. Contemporary jingle dancers use a fan, have fancy footwork, wears leggings (and a vest sometimes), sometimes spin(not really supposed to) and the go in any direction.
I love them jingle dress dancers, they can't sneak up on you.

How many jingles are they supposed to have on dress?
365, you're supposed to have one jingle for everyday of the year

What tribes dance without the fan? In Pacific Northwest I don't see without fan.

Why is it jingle 👗?
it's called jingle because of the "bells"( rolled snuff can lids) it's a medicine dance.
