Quite difficult to explain vegan in Thailand. You can just say “Jay” or “J” like the letter or say “Chan kin jay” (= I eat vegan) coz people might be more familiar with “kin jay” rather than just “jay”. If failed, you can show them these เจ (vegan) มังสวิรัติแต่ไม่กินไข่ (vegetarian but no egg). Hope your phone can display Thai. By the way, if you wanna try exotic fruit, durian season is starting now!

That "vegetarian with no egg" phrase is a genius idea.
Much easier to convey to food vendors, especially if they aren't familiar with "Jay".

      A few more useful phrases
ไม่เผ็ด ‘mai ped’ = not spicy
ไม่ใส่พริก 🌶 ‘mai sai prick’ = no chilies
That Larb from 7-11 you ate looks spicy even for a Thai like me!

I got the top bunk sleeper just like you and the second time i decided to spice it up and get the 3rd class seat from ayutthuaa which was so fun as i generally don't sleep well anyway and it was very social with the locals with people coming around selling food all the time. In chiang mai you can't miss the towering mountain overlooking the city which i decided to climb completely on foot walking from my hostel in the centre of the city as i was trying to be eco as possible exploring by bicylcle or foot only. It was brutal as somehow the day i did it was so bloody hot and i expected to cool down in the waterfalls half way up but as it was the hot season they were all dry. But i pushed myself up to the top having drank all my water and pretty dehydrated from all that effort so got 4 smoothies to hydrate and i found a quiet garden in the meditation retreat temple at the top and just sat for so long mesmerised and in bliss by the monks and students peacefully walking meditating around the grounds. If you're up for a challenge i reckon you should defo do this epic climb walking all the way on foot. You are incredibly fit so they only thing you need to do is take plenty of water and you will be ok. I remember the 7/11 food being so spicy too lol...but for me it was perfect.

  • @MC-ko2mx

You can say "mai ped" (ไม่เผ็ด) to request a less spicy version of whatever you're ordering.
For no chilli at all, I believe it's "mai sai prik" (ไม่ใส่พริก)
Would any Thai speakers care to chime in and confirm this is correct?
Don't want Holly to suffer unnecessarily throughout her trip as she isn't a fan of chilli at all.
I was in a four berth compartment (I think, it's a bit hazy now) on the older version of that sleeper train, and yes, can confirm that everyone pretty much goes to sleep straightaway.
The dude in our compartment demanded absolute silence, so my travel buddies and I had to whisper if we wanted to communicate at all.
And yes, pillow was flat as a pancake. Guess that hasn't changed LOL
You and Matthew did really well navigating yourselves on that train.
We were doing a small group tour and our guide was a champ.
He had us wait at the correct spot on the platform, then hustled us and our bags into the right compartment in 30 seconds flat.
Like you said, the train only stops for 2 minutes, so if left to my own devices, I am pretty sure I would have bungled it.
I am trying to think of some "typical" Thai dishes I tried that could be veganised so you can at least get a taste when you're there.
It would be a pity to be there for a whole month and not get a taste of their cuisine?
I think "pad kra pow taohu" (ผัดกะเพรา เต้าหู้) aka Thai holy basil tofu stir-fry is worth a try.
The minced pork version is popular for lunch and usually comes with a fried egg on top.
You could ask for it to be veganised by saying มังสวิรัติแต่ไม่กินไข่ (vegetarian but no egg) as per the very helpful commenter nuinatnun, plus no chilli "mai sai prik" (ไม่ใส่พริก).
The only other issue I can think of is if they've used fish sauce for flavoring, which obviously isn't vegan.
The versions I had were flavoured with soy sauce AFAIK.
Fish sauce (nam pla น้ำปลา) is heavily used throughout Thailand though and is usually a "silent" animal-derived flavoring agent, even in seemingly "vegan" dishes like stir-fried vegetables.
Just something to be aware of.
You could ask for it to be omitted by saying "mai sai nam pla" (ไม่ใส่ น้ำปลา) and hope the food vendor will just sub out with soy sauce.
IMO there will be some dishes where no substitutions are possible, like som tum or green papaya salad, which is a shame.
It's definitely an iconic dish and really delicious, with a great balance of textures and flavours.
But som tum with soy sauce would be a hot mess LOL
Finally, substitutions, or in fact any deviation from the menu are uncommon in most Asian countries, Thailand included, at least when it comes to street food.
Most vendors sell 1 - 2 items with most of the ingredients already prepped and ready to go.
Customers drop by, order, eat, pay and leave, pretty much.
It would account for a lot of the confusion you are seeing from the vendors.
They aren't being deliberately unhelpful or anything, they simply aren't used to customising menu items.
I think your best bet would be to rely heavily on tofu (taohu เต้าหู้) and vegetable (pak ผัก) stir-fries over rice at made-to-order places, and ask for fish sauce and chilli to be omitted.
Tofu would be the most accessible plant-based protein option in Thailand IMO.
ps: I think it would be a good idea to have all the food modification requests *in Thai* on your phone, so you can just show it to vendors.
Thai is a very tonal language, and difficult to master at the best of times.
Trying to holler out-of-left-field requests at a food vendor over the noise of street traffic and propane wok burners would be making your life unnecessarily difficult LOL

i forgot to recommend The vegetarian society in chiang mai....its the best food i've ever had. Its like a charity thing where the food is literally free. from what i can you can just have rice and 1 curry for nothing but most people go and get rice and two curries for 10 bhat. Also you wash your own dishes afterwards and if you desire you can leave a donation to help them continue their great community work. its such a great concept of vegetarianism and charity and the shop they have sell so many great things.

Helpful Thailand travelling tip! There’s tons of laundry places around and it’s about 30-50 baht - just drop it off and they will wash them for you and you can pick up the next day. This is especially easy in chiangmai and pai.
If you go to Pai there are TONS of vegan restaurants.. and in chiangmai too! Check out Blossom, Ci Xi Jai, earth tone, fat cat… so many amazing food places in pai.

If you want vegan foods .You may say in these sentences" Chan kin Jay or Chan Kin Aharn Jay. (I eat Jay food)" or simply I eat vegetables instate of I eat vegan (sound weird but simple word simple understanding). However ,all Thai foods use Nam Pla(Fish sauce )as their main ingredients .so you may find it even more difficult to find total vegan foods here .Search for " symbol for vegetarian food in thailand".You will notic a yellow triangle flag with a red thai lettering . These Jay yellow flag or symbol is a indicator that foods are vegan ,that restaurant or that food vendor sells only vegan foods. In 7-11 there are also a few Jay foods with a liitle yellowTriangle flag symbol shown on the boxes.

next time when u order food or drink, tell the vendors in English such as "not spicy" or "little spicy" or "no sugar" or "little sweet". They mostly understand.
In case they don't understand. say these to them :
For food ..... "Mai Ped" = not spicy , or , "Ped noi" = less spicy.
For drink .... "No Sugar" or "little sugar" (say these english words easier to understand than saying thai words)
u may use ur phone showing how u want. I everytime order Thai tea with less suger.
Hope u enjoy Thai food and drink throughout ur trip.

Most food in Thailand is spicy unfortunately. I love spicy food but some dishes I couldn’t handle. Have plenty of milk on you as it’s alkaline compared to spice which is acid

Don't you have Google Translate Application in your mobile phone??..You just show them your Thai phrase from your phone 🙏 It's very useful to communicate with local people in Thailand. Enjoy Discovering Thailand 🇹🇭 The land of Everything 👍

Those trains and bunk beds are the most common ones in India. And we should make our beds ourselves. No one will do it for us here.

Are you not concerned about saying the name of the hostel in the video? Or do you just post the video after you've moved on? If I'd be there I'd definitely go to the hostel and try to meet you and maybe you don't want all your fans looking for you 😅😅
