Container Disaster: Never Make This Mistake!

  • Container Disaster: Never Make This Mistake! Last week's video was possibly caused by not removing the locks, and now it's because they weren't set. ALWAYS check your locks folks; it takes seconds and can prevent catastrophic failure. In this case, taking the sharp offramp in a loaded container while more than likely going too fast with no locks set was bound to cause an accident. Luckily no major injuries except hurt pride and the truck.
Alex responded in our 75ton rotator, aka Big Flipper, and myself in my 50ton rotator, aka Hulk, with Hector in our 50ton Vulcan up front to control the tractor. Since the container was 100% off, the obvious decision was to upright the tractor and chassis first and get it out of the way. From there, we did what we do best and brought up the container with horrible room to work in, then hold in place so the good tractor can get underneath.
Don't forget to head to www.pepestowla.com/shop after the video and grab your cool Pepe's swag to represent your favorite tow company!

Nice mix of both cameras to capture the set up as well as giving different angles of the roll over and lift of the container. Scary that trucks can drive off without locking the container down.

Awesome Recovery --- I enjoyed this one much more than the others. The Strain Gauges allowed precision control, and setting it down on the trailer again, was perfect. Loved being able to hear both operators AND having Alex filming also, beautiful .... just wish your helper aiding the Backup Tractor was also BT headset equipped. We could tell that the semi driver was a bit hesitant, he could not see what the trailer was going.

The driver took so damn long to back under the chassis man. You can tell that it must be an automatic truck and he's scared of it. You gotta be a little aggressive when dealing with that automatic when backing up a hill. If not the truck will keep moving forward. Or he could have just held that break anytime he felt uncomfortable, feed gas before release, to avoid the creep/lurch forward, and release the brake when the truck bucks up.
Sad the original driver forgot the locks, but another incredible job by the guys! Thanks for the upload!

    GOOD JOB , Pepe's.
    PRETRIP PRETRIP PRETRIP do them.
Zip ties, plastic, stainless steel, or Stainless Steel safety wire(Harbor Freight has them cheap) around the safety catches and twist lock handles.
If your chassis is missing one of the locks.
    On PRETRIP
    DO NOT USE TILL FIXED.
If safety catch not Zip tied some styles of latches can vibrate to open. on older chassis. And some Acme Screw style. You beat with a hammer till tight.

Now I'm not a truck driver but even a class D car driving person would know like just how important it is to make sure that your 5th wheel is secure - isn't just as important to make sure that the container you're hauling is secured to the chassis before moving said truck? Just a question worth asking from a car driver.
