Join acclaimed indie musician and author Michelle Zauner (a.k.a. Japanese Breakfast) for a conversation with Vulture’s E. Alex Jung about her third album, Jubilee, and her new bestselling memoir, Crying in H Mart.
A beautiful meditation on family, grief, and growing up Korean American, Crying in H Mart establishes Zauner as an assured and clear new voice in the American literary landscape - a stirring counterpoint to her hauntingly innovative and celebratory new music as Japanese Breakfast. Hear her discuss the inception of both the memoir and the record - writing about grief while making music about joy, the contrasts between writing books and writing songs, her upcoming projects, and much more.

I've watched this interview a few times....it's just so good. The conversation was so natural, the questions were so thoughtful (you can tell E. Alex Jung truly read the book with curiosity), and I take away something new every time.
I enjoyed this, the conversation was flowing so naturally...
They're both great! 😊 1stime seeing both
Really appreciate this. Thanks for the share!
second time watching this it will never not be fucking hilarious
My parents were both Korean immigrants and I'm just realizing how weird it was that my mom had us eat bossam with sweet store-bought barbeque sauce. Maybe it's cause our americanized palates were too used to sweet sauces like ketchup, as opposed to gochujang.
I find gochujang sweet. It less the cloying fructose corn sweetness and more a mellow maltose type of sweet.
I feel like she's pretty elitist.. like , "korean bonafides".. I'm just a poor latino.. she is pretty arrogant, IMO.
And her BF is a hack,, JMO
Crying In H Mart starring Anya Taylor Joy as Michelle Zauner and Tila Tequila as Mom.
Ms Tequila's Asian buck teeth prosthetic and "Harro Amellica!" was a little over the top but it's one of her better performances to date. Joy knocks it out the park, White savior at it again!
The way she pronounces kalbi makes me wonder if her mom was even Korean.
Get out of here with that negative shit. ✌️
