You're right, she was fantastic. I would point out, though, that there might be a deliberate choice to not have her doing press and generally becoming a public figure. Acting is fine for a child; becoming famous and dealing with the press and promoting movies is not always so great.
She did an incredible job, but I’m guessing her parents are trying to protect her as much from the public eye as possible since she is so young by keeping her off the press junket which makes lot of sense.
Let's not forget Isla Johnston, wow! as the young Beth Harmon the casting of the young actress that played Beth Harmon was perfection. As the child protagonist Isla Johnston! did a incredible performance, her mannerism, her look, her acting was great, it made the entrance of older Beth that much better. This was definitely a well oiled machine team effort that a lot of people that deserve credit in the making of this excellent extended movie / series that is The Queens Gambit.
I agree. Playing as the young Beth Harmon, she completely sets the tone for AT-J to carry. Be watching out for Isla Johnston in the future. I wish she was included in this interview.
definitely agree she was amazing and also she was one part of the reason why people kept watching this series. Because she made an appearance so strong while delivering all the feelings that Beth was struggling. She is a marvel!!
I was so hoping for one already for some years, there were only a handfull of movies out so far which had chess as a bigger piece in the story. So happy and glad for that mini-series, it is awesome.
Absolutely! As we were watching it, I mentioned to my son that I'd read that it wasn't based on a real story and expressed a certain disappointment. Quite rightly he pointed out that fact that somebody just made this up is an astounding feat of creativity!
I really admire the down-to-earth persona of Foster, despite being a American treasure and a Hollywood legend she still goes out of her way and conduct such conversations with other actors and filmmakers
She's the best. Incredibly down-to-earth. Remember that she put her career on pause, in the early 80s, to go to college. Not many actors do that (they forego almost all kind of education, besides acting classes). So she really has her feet on the ground.
One of the key scenes is when Beth's adopted Mum suggests that Beth give her a 10% management/agent fee out of her winnings and Beth responds by offering 15%
Normally I would get annoyed but Alma was so nervous in that scene which I really sympathized. Alma had a life of sorrow and pain. She definitely felt the lure of money but she was so scared asking about the money would estrange the one and only figure who cares about in her life. I am so thankful for the showrunners who didn't turn it into a cliche negative portrayal. They also deliberately tried to make Beth look as emotionless as possible but through this scene I finally got the feeling that she cares about her family and friends deep down.
@@mzt8787 Yea for a little bit it seemed like maybe they were foreshadowing the mom becoming really greedy but I'm glad they didn't go that direction. There's no true villains in this story which was refreshing. Beth is her own worst enemy.
@@mikecantreed Well, that was unnecessarily rude. I highly doubt that was the only script that got in her way. She's already starred in a Robert Eggers movie, an M. Night movie, she's been in Peaky Blinders etc. Even if she's not all that famous relatively, she's clearly well established already in the industry, among producers, directors etc.
Second that. I saw her in Split and thought she is definitely going places. She has had many more roles than I was aware of so yeah she's not starving @mikecantreed Even her early movies where they tried to pigeonhole her into horror genre shows her talent (The Witch, Morgan)
Isla Johnston was AMAZING in the movie. She set the stage PERFECTLY for Anya. Isla was able to convey her emotions through her eyes and expressions. She’s a TOP CLASS ACTOR. ISLA JOHNSTON ... Never forget her
I wish this interview’s camera had focused on Moses, who played my favorite character, Jolene, a little more when discussing her character. What I loved about Jolene-kudos to the writer/director-was that she was so real, so true to the times I lived through, and in no way a Hollywood cliche of a black girl/women. I had a friend who grew up in an orphanage, and overcame so many terrible experiences to become a truly valuable person-I never forgot her saying that she woke up every morning as a child knowing there was no one on the planet who cared whether she lived or died. Seeing Jolene go from a wise child with those cute little braids to the calm adult with the gorgeous Angela Davis hairstyle who accepts and helps Beth without making a big deal out of it was so well done. Moses did such a totally natural job of creating her character, I never would have guessed it was her first acting job. I can hardly wait to see her again.
I loved her in the series. Such an endearing character. And how she speaks to her friend Beth, calm and wise. I loved the scene when they talk after their squash match. So real!
I think it was hard to go deep into the character because they weren't allowed to give anything away. Hence why they keep saying older but careful not to explain where she is or what she's done. It's a pinnacle point of the series when Jolene reappears, I honesty thought it was Benny when the boot came out the car. You can tell they're not allowed to talk about that scene so I doubt they could go into much more without giving it all away.
I have watched the last episode 4 times now and I can't help my tears looking at the scene when Beth cries looking at her childhood picture with Mr. Shaibel. And the lump in my throat starts when I see the letter pinned in the basement which says.. "Dear Mr Shaibel, there's a chess tournament.."
I’m obsessed with this series. I can’t stop re-watching the episodes. Anya Taylor-Joy is astonishing in this role. Watching her speak here you see a young woman who is 24 but intelligent beyond her years, which is how she managed to deliver a performance as good as this. I’m in awe of her and the whole cast. What a dream role.
My daughter - an improv teacher/performer in LA - told me last week, "Dad, check out this show. You might like it." I checked it out, binge watched with my girl friend (Yes, I'm kind of old to have a girlfriend), and we wrapped it up in two nights. And wanted more. This is close to a perfect show...and I know absolutely nothing about chess except it's played on a board. Congrats to everyone involved. And may you all continue your creative excellence.
friend is never too big to be happy, and that game is very entertaining and brings out the best of each one, either playing it in an amateur way with friends
It's not strange to mistake this mini series for a movie because it is feels like a movie. I believe most viewers watched all episodes in a sitting. It is going to be a classic. Hardly you find a movie where everything falls perfectly into place. A fine ensemble . An excellent script matched with a alluring cinematic approach.
One sitting? 8 hours ? Uhhhhh ...... no. I didn't. I don't know anyone that did. And I know A LOT of people who watched (and enjoyed) this series. Over a week (me), even a weekend (some I know), yes........ but no one watched it in one day. Apparently the people I know all have lives.
@@innismor11 lol you underestimate series bingers then. A lot of people watched this in one sitting. Especially since quarantine gave a lot of free time
@@innismor11 yup i've definitely watched it in one day a couple of times. not the first time though, but later.. the first watch took me i think 3 days :D
Jodie asked great questions. She totally get it, the series, what the characters are about, plot, great insights. I love this series. We won’t see something this brilliance for a while.
2020 is Anya's year. She made the best life decision by accepting the role of Beth. Also the young girl Isla Johnston did an amazing job by carrying the first episode on her back. AMAZING performance. Anya made Beth real, Beth's reactions flew so naturally, her emotions seemed so real. Nothing seemed to be faked. I really liked the series and after three days I'm still under the influence of it. Anya is really beautiful, I think that there's no one better for this role than her. Queen's Gambit is so refreshing comparing it to bunch of same plot series (and films ofc).
This felt like a literature seminar at Yale taught by Professor Jodie Foster. Such illuminating and critical themes that she parsed and discussed with the 3 actors. I know I won’t be able to listen to a banal celebrity interview after this.
alma and beth were so trapped and lonely - so talented - and addicted to the same drug! they were souls that needed each other. just loved their relationship
I came here because I loved the movie so much and wanted to see more. However, I was blown away by Jodie's interview skills. It's so noticeable because it's such a rare talent. Hope to see her interview others in the future. She'd give Diane Sawyer some nice competition. ;-)
Anya draws you into her character and keeps you there. An amazing performance by a gifted actor. This is one performance that you can watch repeatedly and look forward to the next time. I don’t know how many awards this series will get but let the comments on all the RUclips videos be a testament to the greatness of this performance.
Jodie Foster did a masterful interview with the director and cast members. As a very young acting star, director and producer, she has a clear grasp of the movie industry (good and bad). Jodie could be a suitable replacement for the late James Lipton's "Inside The Actor's Studio".
I had no idea what this was. I just saw that it was number 2 trending on Netflix and I was bored. Once I started the first episode, I was hooked and watched all 7 episodes in one sitting. It was amazing! Kudos to Ana Taylor-Joy and the rest of the cast and crew! Now I think I want to read the book.
I was thinking that the reason why the characters let each other benefit from each others performances is because they actually portray different sides of the same character. They would in that case benefit the whole production and their own acting at the same time. Thank you for this series, I loved it!
I really fall in love with this production! The sets, the cast, the cinematography! The acting and first of all the strong and unique story. Congratulations to all of you! Congratulations to this fantastic team!
How does a story (The Queen's Gambit is a novel) about women's brains (Anya playing a world chess prodigy, Moses playing an orphan on track to become a lawyer) become all about women's beauty for someone ?!?? My Gawd. Get a real life.
@@innismor11 Dang, what’s with the insult? Obviously the novel is brilliant, the Director, Cast and all people involved are super talented (men and women). No reason to hipérbole because all comments are not about the portrayal of smart women.
I'm sorry but if these characters were homely, this series would not be as popular as it is. The beauty of both Anya and Moses draws you in visually. Their excellent and authentic portrayals keep you there. The casting director knew exactly what he or she was doing.
A couple of key points of symbolism that isn't getting said (maybe because they are avoiding spoiliers, so don't read this if you haven't watched the show yet), are the clothing and colors as they relate to chess, Beth's addiction and her evolution as a player and person. For example, her clothing as an adult tends to be checkered or in chess like patterns in different ways (also some of the upholstery and wallpaper) and she begins her chess journey in a simple jumper that makes her look like a pawn, but then ends in an amazing white suit and hat that make her look like a chess queen. So she begins as a pawn and ends as a queen. And whenever she is especially taken by her addiction, her clothing and the lighting tends to be the same green tones as the Librium pills. All greens when she is really struggling with her addiction to echo the color of those pills. The costume designers and cinematographers deserve kudos for these details and symbols.
i hope this show is KILLING IT on netflix. it deserves to be amplified, and hey - if shows like this do well, we get more of them! bravo to all who took part in this wonderful series.
Moses got short shrifted in the conversation, especially at the end. Jodie just kind of spoke for her about what Moses' projects were and didn't give her an opportunity to speak for herself. They didn't even put her image up when they were talking about her, which was strange. Glad to know that she is doing other projects because I thought her acting as exceptional in this movie along with everyone else's.
The line between genius and madness manifests in the most beautiful and heartbreaking of ways. I caught myself balancing on the precipice of this girl's story with tears in my eyes filled with such empathy and love.
The visuals in this movie is amazing, every set piece is properly thought out and executed beautifully, and I'm not one who usually notices those kinds of things lol. Anya has always been amazing, been a fan of her since The Witch. You can see her passion in every role she plays in.
Just a beautiful mind blowing ....euphoric show. The young Beth ....I hope she gets the acclaim she deserves as a gifted young actress. Quite outstanding all round....moving, gripping.....mesmerising. There could easily be a second series.....I’d love it to happen. Please !
Just a bit of constructive feedback for you guys @92ndStreetY: I would have loved to see the split screen with all participants more often than just the person who's speaking. For example when Scott Frank is complimenting everyone I would have loved to see the actor's reaction etc. I probably wouldn't have minded to watch the whole discussion just in the split screen... (but maybe that's just me) Other than that: I LOVED this! Jodie Foster is an amazing host and she makes this discussion so deep and interesting. So thank you guys for bringing this to us! :) Oh and I obviously loved the Queen's Gambit as well. I'll probably watch it a 2nd time just now...
I've rewatched this show 4 times over 2 weeks. This is a remarkable show, and my favourite series. Everything from the amazing cast, costuming, set design, camerawork, and story was just perfect. Thank you
I gotta watch it again... and read the book. This is definitely one of those series where you wish you could forget what happens and watch it for the first time over and over again
I reaaly liked how they potrayed the relationship between Alma and Beth. Thank you Jodie fr covering the topic here. And my favourite scene is one with the cild prodigy from Russia Georgi Geriv i think his name, apart from the way Beth trying to psych the kid, its about the question Beth asked him that i think too related to the Ending. The novel is Masterpiece, the series is an epic visualization of it. Thank you for making this happened
I’m missing Thomas here, I really loved his character and his relationship with Beth. Anyway, Jodie was the perfect choice for this talk and oh man what pleasant vídeo to watch. I just love everything about this series, the actors and now this video... what a treasure.
I love this interview so much!!!! Its like attending a film seminar. I love every questions asked and the insights they gave. And Jodie is just awesome as an interviewer!!! 😍😍😍 I wish every interview is as insightful as this.
I like how the series injected some more humour than was in the novel e.g. Alma "Worst cold I've ever seen in a child...yes, plenty of liquids..." Cut to Alma being served a Gibson on the plane... The novel mentions that in Cincinnati (I think) Beth goes over her games looking for weakness and doesn't find any. In the series this becomes: Alma: "What are you doing?" Beth: "Going over my games looking for weaknesses." Alma: "And...?" Beth: "There aren't any" Alma: (Sipping at her Gibson) "Good girl"
@@naurrrre Yes it was. In our house we use it when opening a bottle of wine. :-) My wife isn't a chess player but she loved the series. A lot of the dialogue in the series is lifted verbatim from the novel. Often in the form of the novel's narration given voice by actors in the series e.g. Benny complaints about the US Championship playing conditions are actually Beth's own thoughts in the novel.
I was blown away with this series. The character development, soundtrack, plot etc - everything are amazing! The details are astonishing and I love how it play tribute towards chess.
Thanks for hosting Jodie. Thanks to the cast for creating some really special art. Masterpieces like these only appear every few years or so. Would love to hear more in depth behind some of the key scenes in this show!
Jodie Foster is an actor of exceptional talent, depth and beauty who was always ahead of her peers, by the time actors of her age were in their diapers she was making commercials, by the time they learned to speak, she was making movies for Disney, by the time they starting going to the school, she was winning awards and getting nominated for the Oscars, by the time they decided to enter films, Jodie decided to leave it behind and enjoy the ivy league world which she graduated with magna cum laude, by the time her peers had their breakthrough she already had won two Oscars and transitioned to the director's chair. An extraordinary talent, who's contribution to cinema is unparalleled and exquisite. A sheer gift to the world of acting and filmmaking
So, when you're going to be doing a live stream, everyone silence your phones first. Queen's Gambit is a GREAT show. I was not expecting how surprising and interesting and subtle it was. All of the characters were fully realized in a way that I just don't see that often, and I really loved it. The final scene was suprisingly emotional, I wasn't expecting to be so moved by the show at so many different points. And of course, I loved the attention to detail in the production design (though it seemed like everyone drove around in Chevrolet Bel-Air cars), and I love how tacky and gauche the Wheatley house was both before and after the makeover. That wallpaper traumatized me, and I love it.
I feel privileged to be able through RUclips to be directly in "contact" with the people of the Craft, it's so amazing to listen, learn, and understand the creative process of a mini series I've loved so much....Thank you for sharing this
fantastic to get "Parasite" in 2019 and this in 2020. Despite the absolute horror from the start of 2019 to the end of October of 2020, these two profound pieces of outstanding artistic fiction were born.
It was a wonderful film; thank you for creating characters with empathy, complexity and beauty. Amazingly honest . My own mother was a Henry Clay High debate champ who grew up as an orphan, in a brothel. In Lexington. She had three amazing woman (boarders in brothel) in her life who loved her, fed her and made sure she would grow up as a wonderful, successful, yet flawed person. Incredible.
From Brisbane, Australia, great video series, great hosting/moderation by Jodie for so greatly interviewing everyone. Besides Anya’s acting which was SUPERB, something that has already been overwhelmingly commented everywhere, I’d also like to emphasise the acting of those other two amazing babes: Moses and Marielle, where they has demonstrated an incredible talent (and both VERY attractive personalities). I’d like to see those two ladies in more movies, but good ones, where they can match their capabilities and recognition. To me personally, this was on of the best movie I have seen in years, even on top of “Searching for Bobby Fischer” and “Pawn Sacrifice” about the chess world. It condenses 4-5 grand master minds and their personal issues. Of course, I congratulate the wise input from the director to add the backup from Pandolfini and Karpov, plus all the other actors… truly marvellous achievement on professional chess player’s realism! As a former chess player myself, the only problem and “bad” thing I found about this 7 chapters is that becomes more addictive than chess itself and pills; even if you haven’t ever touched a chess board or played it in your life. I’ve seen this entire masterpiece twice in a week with my wife. Thank you all and thank you Jodi for the hosting.
Even the cast convo about The Queen's Gambit is the best cast convo I could have wished for. Such a treat. To be in the company of this intelligent, generous, exceptional group of people for this time. Still reeling from the realisation that this guy created both Beth Harmon and Mary Agnes, two of my favourite TV characters ever. The moment Jodi mentioned German romanticism my mind went to Babylon Berlin. Great to hear about the link between the two shows
Jodie Foster should have her own show. This was brilliant. I was hoping to find a couple of little interviews with the director and cast and came across this and I think this is the best interview of it's kind that I've ever seen.
I learned the basic moves of chess 60 years ago and never played much except against my children. I enjoyed it so much and watched it twice and a third time at high speed jumping forward to watch the best bits again. Great performances from the whole cast and the girl who played the young Beth. What a rounded show and I would like to see what happened to the character in later life if it's ever possible without the original author around to write it. Congrats to everyone involved - definitely the most enjoyable mini series I have watched for a long time and I have even played a couple of games online this week on that chess site.
Excellent interview. "Queen's Gambit" was excellent. One of the best series I've ever seen. The child who played the younger Beth was wonderful. And I loved the performance of Anya Taylor-Joy.
I loved the series, everything about it is just stunning. I did not know Jodie Foster was involved. The one and only Jodie Foster, I watched all her movies including those she has directed.
I enjoy watching them analyze every aspect of this book/series in ways I never thought were possible. Might be the only full interview I've ever watched from beginning til end
So excited for all involved in this production. It was emotionally satisfying, beautifully filmed/acted and seeing Mari onscreen was uplifting. This interview with Jodie Foster was the sweetest icing on the cake. Congratulations, all! Thanks for creating.
This was a great interview. I just finished the series, loved it, and wanted to wait a few weeks and watch it again. There is so much this wonderful group brought out for me to enjoy on the 2nd watch.
I was intrigued from the very first moment. I started playing chess by myself and only really competed in a very small scale in my final year of high school. I connected to the transition that Beth made and just admired her powers of concentration. Boris Spassky and Bobby Fisher was the first Chess World Championship I watched, so thanks so much for this trip down memory lane about growing up. Wonderful interactions in this conversation and in the series!!
I love Jodie Foster and I love Queen Gambit! Beautiful combination, thank you for this interview 💗 except I don't agree about mother dauther relationship...I don't see them as " political couple"..
First, thank you for such a meaningful conversation. I was really impressed by the series and specially the acting an writing. To me , it tells how even a genius, and maybe specially geniuses need this cable to earth through simple humane people who care about them. I have dealt with these kind of people and the look in their eyes when they discover certain safety in the world by understanding it through the attention of “normal” people its just precious and I saw this in Beth’s eyes. Both actresses were amazing! I believe the continuity in acting between the two Beths is truly out of this world. I have not seen these seamless transition between a girl character and her adult persona. the other thing that impressed me was that for the first time, an orphanage is not this horrible sinister place but a place with lots of sadness because of the girls situation, but with people who tried to do a good job with them with their available tools. Excellent series. Netflix is choosing and dealing on great pieces. Thank you again for allowing us to know all of you a bit better. I agree with one of the comments suggesting that Jodie Foster could do a series about great movies. I will certainly be on RUclips for it. Thank you again. Carolina Peralta from Chile.
I know absolutely nothing about chess but a lot about life struggles! I couldn't stop watching this show until it was over. One day is all it took and this show touched so much in me. It is magnificent!!!
Jodie Foster, you are a star! I love the way you analyze scripts and characters! Please host a show focused on movie making but looking at all aspects of production. :D
amazing series watched it 3 times learn things everytime you watch it again the one thing was that the male chess players respected Beth and being female was not a problem only to the outsiders who dont realise that chess family is all about the game great series
Marielle Heller is such a good actress that when I saw her in the thumbnail for this, I thought, 'what?!.' I realized that it was because it took me a second to remember she isn't really dead. Wonderful portrayal.
Life is chess, not checkers. I love everything about this show. I can relate to Beth, being named Elizabeth, being an orphan (I even dye my hair the same color, with henna), I have mommy issues more than "daddy issues", and a big part of my story is struggling with drinking.. I have learned to love being completely alone from a very young age, I mean, there are so many correlations to my life and this series... I found it healing in such a strange way, and I don't find many shows that I actually enjoy.
Loved the casts viewpoints and insight making The Queen's Gambit it is an epic and brilliant mini-series! I would agree that Isla Johnston was the beginning key actress setting up the remaining episodes for Anya! I also wonder why 9 year old Beth's beating of the "12" Duncan High School Chess Club members was never scripted as a memory or quoted by character in the next 6 episodes? I would love have heard some audience member or maybe an opponent of Beth's remembering her as the 9 year old! That was filmed showing the genius of young Beth Harmon but for some reason not mentioned again.
what was unique about these women is that they did not fall into an orbit around a dominant male... they were individuals with their own life.. Let's not forget the Riviera's fantastic music throughout and in the 7th part...
they were all superb but i absolutely adored marielle heller. she really has a natalie wood vibe going on. her eyes tell the story, and it doesnt require words.
I bloody love this series. From the start I was drawn in hook, line and sinker, which is testament to great writing, casting and acting. The whole cast played their part magnificently and huge shout out to Anya, Moses and Marielle. 🙌🙌💪🐬
Me neither I want to know more about Beth's mother (Alice Harmon.) How did her mother go from a wealthy math professor at Cornell to... whatever she was at the end
What I loved about this movie is that it pushes today’s agenda and narrative of female empowerment while at the same time staying in tune and true with the times which was the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s and the roles of men and women. All the performances were just lovely and I was surprised at how much I loved this series! Anya’s caught my attention and so has Moses. Will be following their careers. Really excited to see where they go from here. I see Oscar futures for both! Alma, oh Alma, Alma, Alma, man, I really enjoyed her! She was strange and distance, but embracing and loving. Way more then a political couple. They loved each other and on a maternal level, I felt. When she offered to be her “mother,” I cried. The “stunned” look of Beth when Alma see her through the window and they connect, the slight Alma smile. Truly STUNNING performances by all. Truly.
I definitely need to read the book. Also, Moses Ingram is a lovely speaker. I could listen to her talk all day. Would love to know more about Jolene's story. Harmon can visualize the chess board without the drugs though, we saw her looking at the ceiling during her match with Borgov in Moscow. I like how Anya explained drug addiction - it works until it doesn't. I feel like this is something that needs to be reiterated, drug addiction and alcoholism ruins people. It nearly killed Beth. And I think if she wasn't hungover she would not have been defeated so brutally Paris. Isla Johnston blew me away with her performance. She nailed the role of young Beth....I didn't know Anya invented Beth's walk. Also that's hilarious how she was struggling to suck at dancing. I think I read somewhere she did ballet. I also wonder what Anya thinks about when she cries. Probably her trauma of maybe she's just really good at getting in character. I'm shooked that this is Moseses first film, she's so professional... maybe she acted at Yale? If a director doesn't like actors... shouldn't they get a different job??? Also I had no idea Marielle Stiles Heller had a baby! She looks incredible... No way did she just give birth a week ago. That's very exciting mazel tov Marie!!
Thanks for such a wonderful discussion! I think I liked the moments of Alma and Beth together the most, their relationships were so complex and so real. Marielle is an amazing person too!
Why no one is interviewing the young girl who played Beth as a child? Been looking for her on youtube and nothing. I think she did a terrific job.

Isla Johnston was AMAZING in the movie. She set the stage PERFECTLY for Anya. Isla was able to convey her emotions through her eyes and expressions. She’s a TOP CLASS ACTOR. ISLA JOHNSTON ... Never forget her
Nobody forgot her, she just wasn't part of this interview. She was wonderful in the part but that has zero to do with this.
So real!
Iam so lazy to read long comments lik this.
Yes. Especially when she reunited with Beth that was amazing and so unexpected
It's a webcam...
Jodie must host a show talking about movies.
Definetly!!!!
She could call it Lez Go To The Movies.
She should do a new version of inside the actors studio. Love loved that show. RIP James Lipton.
I was thinking the same thing, as she kept calling the series a "movie"
I have watched the last episode 4 times now and I can't help my tears looking at the scene when Beth cries looking at her childhood picture with Mr. Shaibel. And the lump in my throat starts when I see the letter pinned in the basement which says.. "Dear Mr Shaibel, there's a chess tournament.."
Same!! I cried too when she cried in the car 😭
O yes, that is the moment, I cried too.
God even thinking about that scene makes me sob
My favorite scene!!!
My favorite series...
It’s an epic!!!!
Aww who says you’re too old to have a girlfriend? 🥰
I just finished watching it for a second time and already feel nostalgic, man what a project to be a part of ✨✨
It's not strange to mistake this mini series for a movie because it is feels like a movie.
Especially since quarantine gave a lot of free time
@@innismor11 I watched 1-3 in the evening, then 4-7 the next day. Embarrassing, yes, but fun.
55 mins x 7 episodes?? Jesus, you got nothing else to do?
@@innismor11 yup i've definitely watched it in one day a couple of times. not the first time though, but later.. the first watch took me i think 3 days :D
Best series I've seen in years!
An epic!!!
This movie is note worthy of an award. Great story. Great script. Great casting. Great costume. Great production. Great movie.
Jodie asked great questions. She totally get it, the series, what the characters are about, plot, great insights. I love this series. We won’t see something this brilliance for a while.
This is the first show since Euphoria that made me feel some type of way. It was brilliant. Excellent acting, script and plot.
I'm a huge fan of these mini series. I hope Netflix continues making them.
Let's not forget Moses Ingram
This felt like a literature seminar at Yale taught by Professor Jodie Foster. Such illuminating and critical themes that she parsed and discussed with the 3 actors. I know I won’t be able to listen to a banal celebrity interview after this.
Completely agree.
Yaasss!!! I love how Jodie is such a fan of the series! Love this interview so much!!! Love their insights. I need to watch this series again
i never really watch interviews this long but god this conversation is beyond engaging, such brilliant minds
alma and beth were so trapped and lonely - so talented - and addicted to the same drug! they were souls that needed each other. just loved their relationship
Jodie Foster was magnificent. Jodie really drew out so much from Scott and the three actors. Such an energizing exchange.
This show is beyond phenomenal. Everything about it is incredible.
It's so beautiful. I want to look like Beth so badly and I also want 1960s fashion to come back! 60s clothes are so classy
Cab we also just recognize that Jodie Foster was the prefect choice for moderator and does such a wonderful job = )
Absolutely!!
I finished this series so quickly, I keep having withdrawal symptoms.Somebody help me! I need more Queen's Gambit.
I really fall in love with this production! The sets, the cast, the cinematography! The acting and first of all the strong and unique story. Congratulations to all of you! Congratulations to this fantastic team!
Anya gets most of the talk about her exotic beauty but Moses is also gorgeous and that voice is so nice and kinda peaceful.
They were such a powerful couple, these two on screen. Such a beautiful friendship, and they depicted an orphan friendship so well.
Oh yeah, I could listen to Moses forever. She could do those Calm voice overs.
It is ☝️
Moses got short shrifted in the conversation, especially at the end.
It was an emotional rollercoaster... And I never wanted it to end. So now I'm watching all interviews. I'm so obsessed
Please !
Just a bit of constructive feedback for you guys @92ndStreetY:
I would have loved to see the split screen with all participants more often than just the person who's speaking. For example when Scott Frank is complimenting everyone I would have loved to see the actor's reaction etc. I probably wouldn't have minded to watch the whole discussion just in the split screen... (but maybe that's just me)
Other than that: I LOVED this! Jodie Foster is an amazing host and she makes this discussion so deep and interesting. So thank you guys for bringing this to us! :) Oh and I obviously loved the Queen's Gambit as well. I'll probably watch it a 2nd time just now...
You raised a good point. Angling is important!
@@leo-vr4yr yeah exactly! I wanna relive my first time watching this show
Marielle is such a joy to listen to. Hoping she can find another role that excites her as much as Alma!
Really* child*
I love how people keep accidentally calling it a movie.
Suppose to be limited mini series and maybe a "movie" cos no season 2 for it
I feel like a lot of these miniseries are sort of extended films. David Lynch says that he considered Twin Peaks: Season 3 a film.
Actually tv shows are movies.. It's like comparing apple to orange but they are the 'fruits'.
It was a movie to me since I binge watched it through the night
I’m missing Thomas here, I really loved his character and his relationship with Beth. Anyway, Jodie was the perfect choice for this talk and oh man what pleasant vídeo to watch. I just love everything about this series, the actors and now this video... what a treasure.
I love this interview so much!!!! Its like attending a film seminar. I love every questions asked and the insights they gave. And Jodie is just awesome as an interviewer!!! 😍😍😍 I wish every interview is as insightful as this.
I like how the series injected some more humour than was in the novel e.g.
Alma "Worst cold I've ever seen in a child...yes, plenty of liquids..."
Cut to Alma being served a Gibson on the plane...
The novel mentions that in Cincinnati (I think) Beth goes over her games looking for weakness and doesn't find any. In the series this becomes:
Alma: "What are you doing?"
Beth: "Going over my games looking for weaknesses."
Alma: "And...?"
Beth: "There aren't any"
Alma: (Sipping at her Gibson) "Good girl"
The after-sex pat on the shoulder 😂 ..not to mention it was an improv!
“My tranquility needs to be refurbished” is already an iconic line. Was it in the novel?
@@naurrrre Yes it was. In our house we use it when opening a bottle of wine. :-) My wife isn't a chess player but she loved the series. A lot of the dialogue in the series is lifted verbatim from the novel. Often in the form of the novel's narration given voice by actors in the series e.g. Benny complaints about the US Championship playing conditions are actually Beth's own thoughts in the novel.
The greatest show ever! I have watched it three times so far! Going to watch it again! It should win all the Emmy's this year!
I totally agree!
It’s a masterpiece!!!
Jodie Foster is the real GOAT
?
@@theodoreroosevelt7471 greatest of all time
I love this Netflix Movie. Everybody did a great a job. Anya is simply spectacular. What an honor been interviewed by the greatest Jodie Foster.
Agreed. Jodie has been my favourite actor pretty much my whole life. Turns out she's a fabulous interviewer too.
Chess, drugs, and WALLPAPER, yeah!
I was startled by the phone too
I feel privileged to be able through RUclips to be directly in "contact" with the people of the Craft, it's so amazing to listen, learn, and understand the creative process of a mini series I've loved so much....Thank you for sharing this
fantastic to get "Parasite" in 2019 and this in 2020.
Incredible.
The first most powerful interview that this show deserves thank you Jodie!!!
Thank you all and thank you Jodi for the hosting.
marielle- we need to see lots more of you. you were amazing.
The one and only Jodie Foster, I watched all her movies including those she has directed.
i enjoyed this long, thoughtprovoking, calm discussion
I enjoy watching them analyze every aspect of this book/series in ways I never thought were possible. Might be the only full interview I've ever watched from beginning til end
So excited for all involved in this production. It was emotionally satisfying, beautifully filmed/acted and seeing Mari onscreen was uplifting. This interview with Jodie Foster was the sweetest icing on the cake. Congratulations, all! Thanks for creating.
I wish we could have heard more from Moses. She is incandescent on the screen too,
Stole every scene she was in
Agree. "F__k em if they can't take a joke"...she was great from the beginning to end in every scene!
This was a great interview. I just finished the series, loved it, and wanted to wait a few weeks and watch it again. There is so much this wonderful group brought out for me to enjoy on the 2nd watch.
Me too! I will watch it again right now 😄
This is the best interview/talk on this movie! Jodie had so much insight and passion for the material.
Kudos to all concerned one of the best things I have seen in years! Extraordinary!!
Wonderful interactions in this conversation and in the series!!
easily the most brilliant and gorgeous show i've ever watched.
The exact same for me.
Anya is hitting her stride in this series. She just became very very beautiful. I am now waiting for what ever she does next.
Jodie Foster, you are a star! I love the way you analyze scripts and characters! Please host a show focused on movie making but looking at all aspects of production. :D
Is also interesting too see how many british actors were in this series. Very good interview, I like it a lot.
Enjoyed this video to the max! Fantastic series and wonderful choice of Jodie Foster to host this interview!!
The little Beth is so great actress!
amazing series watched it 3 times learn things everytime you watch it again the one thing was that the male chess players respected Beth and being female was not a problem only to the outsiders who dont realise that chess family is all about the game great series
Omg why was the world so cruel to the young Marielle Heller 😭😭😭 such a talent
Fantastic series & adaptation. This conversation was one of the best I've watched.
I am so in love with this show ! I have full respect with the cast and crew in this show , thank you ❤❤❤
I wish that the little girl who played young Beth was spoken about more. She was fantastic and gave so much to this series.
I bloody love this series. From the start I was drawn in hook, line and sinker, which is testament to great writing, casting and acting. The whole cast played their part magnificently and huge shout out to Anya, Moses and Marielle. 🙌🙌💪🐬
FABULOUS series! Didn't want it to end!
Me neither I want to know more about Beth's mother (Alice Harmon.)
How did her mother go from a wealthy math professor at Cornell to... whatever she was at the end
I love the internet and how awesome the world has become watching raw interviews like this
What I loved about this movie is that it pushes today’s agenda and narrative of female empowerment while at the same time staying in tune and true with the times which was the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s and the roles of men and women.
