ALF follows the adventures of Gordon Shumway, a furry, wise-cracking alien from the planet Melmac who crash lands into the garage of the Tanner family. They won't convict her. It's clear that she's a kelpto, and she does it impulsively without realizing it.
Most they would do is put her on probation and order her to get psychiatric help, if it all fails... THEN she gets jail, or possibly the nuthouse
When I was 12 we had a kid who did what Jakes Mom did One day He stole a pencil out of another kids desk The Teacher saw him do it but the kid denied it even he was holding the pencil I was in a Special Ed Class I wonder if he ever got help for his problem

kleptomania is a legitimate disease...I don't know, something about the confrontation and how she was so insistent that Jake come back now instead of when she's better makes it sound like she doesn't want her son back, she wants her fall guy back; I mean look how unsurprised and used to all this Jake is, like this isn't the first time he's had to return what she stole for her; because the people she stole from is less likely to get mad and call the cops if it's a teary and begging child apologizing and asking them not to take his mother away. I dunno, it just gives me an odd feeling
