In regards to the Aussie cricket team,
1) David Warner planned it, and made a youngster, Cameron Bancroft execute it.
2) Steve Smith, the captain knew about their plan but didn’t stop them.
As an Australian, I feel as if I should provide some context for No. 10.
I’m not saying what they did was right. That sort of behaviour has no place in sport, and it still brings shame upon Aus Cricket and Aussie sport as a whole.
That being said, the reason I believe it has been such a significant scandal is down to how the ICC and Cricket Aus reacted. The fact of the matter is, although blatant ball tampering isn’t commonplace, it’s more rampant than you’d think. Over the decades, many players have been fined and faced suspensions over cheating, as they do in all sports, but what defined this scandal was how great the fall out was. Smith, heralded as one of the greatest batsmen of the time and Aus Captain, along with crowd favourite and opener Warner got a 12 month suspension, which is peanuts in comparison to other instances of similar ilks, varying from a few months off to only a handful of games!
It’s not just the audacity of the cheating that makes it noteworthy, but more so, the fact that Cricket Aus came down with an iron fist where many other countries wouldn’t.
