This is 2023 and I am glad that Hank is still remembered, appreciated and loved. He will be entertaining the world, long after this 87 year old Englishman is long gone and forgotten. Regards to all his fans. October, 2023. England.
I ❤ this song . At the cemetery next to my mom's grave there's a 3 month baby boy buried there . You can clearly see that nobody visits the grave because there's never no flowers on the grave . I find this so sad , because its like he's been forgotten . I know its not the case because I know a parent would never forget such a tragic loss. I place flowers on his grave for him , for his parents . Because I think everyone should have flowers on their grave - so people know that someone cares and as a sign that the person hasn't been forgotten .
Very sad, Mike. Very considerate of you. Maybe the heartache is too great & the family does not wish to relive what happened to the infant :-(.................
Some people might call this sort of song maudlin but I'd like to think that this would bring comfort to couples who have lost children before their time. And there are couples who have lost children; we shouldn't forget.
I have been listening to Hank Williams for all of my life and I am 65 years old My father Tom Byrd would buy his recordings and play them for everyone and even as a kid my heart and soul would be filled with the joy of his performance and I believe that he truly was the very first super star in country music and to this day is still the greatest country music super star ever and that includes George Jones Conway Twitty Lester Flatt Earl Scruggs Johnny Cash Merle Haggard Willie Nelson Waylon Jennings Porter Wagoner Earnest Tubb and the list goes on and on with Hank Williams right at the top When every new year comes in I always think about him and what country music would be like today had he of lived a full life and written more songs for everybody to enjoy And thank you everybody for letting me say what I felt about Hank Willams and May God bless us all and love always your friend in Christ Jesus Gerald R.Byrd
This is a sad song, reflecting on the issue of infant mortality. It was fairly high in the poor areas of Appalachia then, and it still is to this day, even in Ohio.
The tears always fall when I listen to this song, nobody should have to go through a child's death ever, words can't describe what my tears want to say.
I did and this made me revisit those dark days. I cried for him and my daughter. She was only 2 years old my heart broke and it was physically painful.
Beautiful song- Lost our 37 year old mentally delayed but intelligent daughter almost 7 years ago in an auto accident. My wife miraculously only had very minor cuts and bruises.
Why did he die so young.man the songs he had left in him to do.really our great loss.no matter were you go today if it's country music you will hear people sing his songs.true true fans bless them all.
Unknown to the public until many years after his death, Hank Williams was born with spina bifida. Around 1950, Williams injured his back badly in a fall during a hunting trip. The injury was so bad, it was unknown if he would ever walk again. Hank Williams recovered, but was in constant pain. A doctor, later found out to be a "quack", prescribed him various painkillers and medications to kill the pain, and to help him get awake, and to fall asleep while touring on the road. Williams' alcoholism only made things worse. Over time, the medications damaged his heart, and Hank Williams died in his sleep of an aortic aneurysm (a hole opened up in his aorta, and he bled to death inside) whiled riding in his car on his way to a concert in Canton, Ohio on January 1, 1953.
This reminds me of an epitaph on and infant's grave I once saw: It is so soon that I am done for I wonder what I was begun for sigh. No tears like a parent's who has lost a child 😖😪
“In the English language there are orphans and widows, but there is no word for the parents who loses a child.” ― Jodi Picoult, My Sister's Keeper You never "get over it," but it does get better. and it does. Going on 30 years now, I lost a little boy. I have never stop thinking of what might have been. I have been blessed with a beautiful daughter in heart, soul and face, but there some things I could have only passed on to a son. July of 90' I had a N.D.E. and I had felt my son's presence near. When I came to in C.C. U. I remembered my parting message; "Nothing is forever, but what is, is." Life moves on, and never totally, so must we... at least for now...Will
+RIDETHESUNSHINE That loss never goes away. It's been 39 yrs ago that may wife and I lost our first. A still birth. Every year at the cemetery I still shed my tears. Twice this year. Just thinking of him, I do it again. God bless you, and all others who know this feeling.
The story of the song is revealing. I believe the mother was speaking of the grief of her husband at the loss of their child (we lost our baby). Others have disagreed as to who was telling the story, perhaps a random stranger. Many people today suffer as their loved ones go through dementia. I would welcome comments. Hank told a story like no one else.
(I'M NOT YELLING, IN FACT THE ONLY SOUND I'M MAKING IS THE TAP TAP TAP OF THE KEYBOARD. I TYPE IN ALL CAPS SO THAT WHEN I TYPE I'LL I CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE I'S VS L'S) ANYWAYS, THAT'S WHAT I LOVE ABOUT HANK WILLIAMS. HE LETS YOUR MIND BE OPEN ABOUT THINGS SUCH AS WAS IT THE PARENTS, OR PERHAPS THE DAD AND STEP-FATHER MEETING FOR THE FIRST TIME? THEY'D BE STRANGERS TO ONE ANOTHER... AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT I IMAGINE WHEN I LISTENING TO THIS SONG. (WE LOST OUR BABY) BOTH MY BIRTH-FATHER AND STEP-DAD CALL ME THEIR BABY GIRL, AND THOUGH I'LL BE TURNING 31 I'LL ALWAYS BE MY DADDY'S BABY GIRL. I'M 'PART OF HIS HAPPIER YEARS', AND HE IS OF MINE. THAT'S ONE THING I'M GOING TO DO WHEN I GET TO HEAVEN, I'M A GONNA HUNT DOWN HANK WILLIAMS, AND ASK HIM THE TRUE MEANING OF THIS SONG.
My brother died on a cold January My youngest brother died on a cold January Our Mother Died on a Cold December on 21st of 2007 She was there too welcome both of her children with Jesus

Hank died at the age of 29 but the impact he made during his short life still makes the earth tremble. God Bless a Great Man

no one could ever replace hank sr.
And NO ONE ever will!!!!!!!!
Anyone who can listen to this song and not get tears in their eyes is not human.
The tears just do not come with emotion, but my eyes sting. The feeling slides up and down my back.
Very true- I'm sniffling right now :-(........
I have lived this song in 1970 when my infant son died at the first snow at 3months of age .
God bless you Sir

You got that right, my only hope or care in this world is the survival of my daughters during my lifetime.
I did and this made me revisit those dark days. I cried for him and my daughter. She was only 2 years old my heart broke and it was physically painful.
Am sure all the little ones are with God in Heaven but will all be together before long

Like the line in " Who's gonna fill their shoes " says ( the heart of country music still beats in Luke the Drifter ) and always will.

Accompaniment has been added. Not bad, but I like it best with just Hank and his guitar.
This was done on the Mother's Best Show. The accompaniment was there; it wasn't added later. He simply did two version of it.
