"Why Do You Listen to Metal?!"

  • I hope you enjoy this discussion. It took quite a while to put this video together.
This is one of the most reoccurring questions I get. The fact that I do, in fact, listen to and love metal surprises people. I hadn't realized I was an anomaly until recently when comments from some subscribers here on RUclips have repeatedly indicated that my choice in music is "strange"?
There are many misconceptions and stereotypes attached to the genre and those who listen to it. I hope to expand your mind with this video. I also hope to one day find other black females, and especially African immigrants, who enjoy metal as well.
I would really love to hear your thoughts on this topic so feel free to comment below!
Intrigued? Try these songs to slowly delve into the world of metal and similar genres (in order of light rock, metal, to heavy hardcore):
Incubus - Adolescents (reflection on coming of age and what it means to be young and in your world)
    • Incubus - Adolescents ...
Demon Hunter - Carry Me Down (lyrics are incredible, sad but makes you come to terms with inevitable death and awaits after, voice is also great)
    • Demon Hunter - Carry M...
Of Mice & Men - My Understandings (simple lyrics but the instruments strike an agonizing cord deep inside that I still have no words for, his voice also has incredible range)
    • Of Mice & Men - My Und...

If that's my happy place why should I mess my mind up by listening to everything out there

Late to the party but here’s my story.
Like most modern Black Americans, I grew up listening to Rap and R&B as well as occasionally Raggae and African music. I did also listen to rock/metal too, but I would always prefer rap. From 5th grade to middle school, rap is starting to die out (or at least the kind that I like is) and started listening to metal and EDM more. Like you, it started off with Linkin Park. Then there’s Limp Bizkit and other Nu-Metal and Rap-rock bands. Shortly after I discovered Sum 41, S.O.A.D., and Escape the Fate then I started listeng to Evanescence again and my love for metal has kickstarted. I would play any band or certain songs I like whenever I could, and sometimes even become a one man moshpit. Many of my family members except for my father (an occasional rock/metal listener. Introduced me to Creed, Seether, and Pink Floyd) had gave me shit for it. As a tween already going through depresion (obesity, falling behind school, and parents constantly arguing with each other) this had a harsher effect on me than normal. Eventualy, I got over them and they started to leave me alone. I always look forward to finding new artists and listen to every song they made. I find comfort in metal the most regardless of how aggresive vocals and/or riffs are. Listen to what you want and dont anyone grieve you.
    Rock on sis!

I've discovered you because of your Jinjer reaction, and knowing your background makes it even better. Of course, metal is like a desert and every band is like a sand grain, each one is unique, vibrant and amazing in its own way. Every metalhead has their own story, and we're like a huge family. If I find someone who likes it in the street and shows it by wearing a T-shirt or something like that, I immediately have a smile in my face and I want to recommend some more. So, in this metaphorical street, here are some bands I love:
    Ensiferum - From Afar
    Skálmöld - Loki
Dark Oath - Tree Of Life
    Wintersun - Time
    Korpiklaani - Keep On Galloping

OMG this is crazy since i've never met/seen another Eritrean listening to metal. I 100% relate to your story even if i didn't emigrate here. I'm Eritrean/Filipino so I was always different growing up in a town with literally no Habesha/Africans, always being a part of a group but the outsider. So I get the whole isolated deal.
It's so crazy you're saying you feel calm in the "craziness" of the music cause I feel the same. Music is the best escape, a healing tool, emotion modifier, and fucking everything lol. you're waaay more eloquent on explaining.
I'm more on the metalcore/progmetalcore/hardcore/poppunk side of things. Some bands I always come back to are Killswitch Engage, a day to remember, bullet for my valentine, Underoath, fall of troy, and Saosin.
i'm legit blown away to see someone like me, you're amazing!

This video brought back so many memories. I was born and raised as a Muslim and later eventually started to hold a more secular view. I grew up with Bathory, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost and people usually get really surprised when out of know where I start talking about first and second wave as well as contemporary black metal bands. As I always say metal is not a phase, it's a part of our identity.

I'm a Black man and started listening to metal in my preteens. In my experience, White guys my age were intrigued that someone outside their ethnicity would listen to a genre only they had enjoyed. I felt the same when rap expanded out of the ghetto and White kids started listening to it. It made me wonder what another ethnic group was getting from a genre almost tailor made for Young Black men. I think these moments help bridge gaps between people more than the useless politicians, or (insert here) rights activists that help drive divisions between us today.

I listen to all kinds of music, and metal is one of them. When i told people that i was into metal, they would usually be surprised but not judgemental. I guess i was lucky. However I am perfectly aware of how much judgement people make out of someone's taste in music, i think that it's because it's one of the many ways you can learn about Somebody's personality. Unfortunately we don't live in an open minded world.

hey there, just came across this video after watching your Jinjer - Pisces reaction video.
i completely agree with the sentiment that people should not make assumptions about others based upon their ethnicity, their look/image, and/or their musical preferences.
i grew up listening to hard rock and metal, and still do to this day...it's definitely my "go-to" genre, even though as i've gotten older, i've learned to appreciate a whole range of other types of music as well, and regularly listen to other styles. country music and bubble-pop/"top 40" are really the only kinds of music i have never been able to get into.
i was raised in rural Texas in a very small town (my entire school from K-12 was roughly 350 - 400 people), and although by my ethnicity (white male) i quote-unquote "fit in", i always felt like a complete outsider even into early adulthood because of the stigma that my metalhead image brought me. almost everyone there treated me like some kind of satanic freak because i wasn't a "good 'ol boy" who listened to country music, chewed tobacco, and drank too much beer while sitting out in some deer blind out in the woods.
today, i make no apologies to anyone about my musical preferences, and i'm proud to be a metalhead because in the end, if anyone has a problem with it, it's their problem to have. if people would only take a few minutes to actually talk to someone else and get to know them even a little bit, they might come to realize that metalheads are pretty much just like anyone else; we have hopes & dreams, feelings & emotions, and with only a few exceptions (although this is not limited to just metalheads), are not out to cause trouble or hurt anyone.
to me, hard/heavy music is a way to wash away the stresses of life in a healthy, non-harmful way, and there are just so many different facets to the music that make it never get stale or old. to me, if a song that just came out within a year or two ends up being played as musak in a department store, elevator, or restaurant as just "background filler sound", how good could it really have been to begin with?
anyway, i just wanted to say that this video really resonates with me, and although we come from dissimilar backgrounds, we're really not so different in the end. i think you're beautiful in mind, body and spirit, and the world would be a much better place if there were more like you.

Bravo! Well said. I came here from your Jinjer/Pisces reaction, which impressed me.
My wife (black and originally Kenyan) introduced me (white and English) to Linkin Park and Cypress Hill. Music knows no bounds.
My metal journey started at the beginning, the 1970's in Birmingham and London. Jinjer recently reignited my passion for metal and enabled me to appreciate harsh vocals for the first time.
Metal and progressive rock have always been important to me but I've never expressed it as eloquently as you have. Thank you.

@@colin6612 Yes indeed, a lot of older Opeth is very good. I'm not moved by their newer material though. I get the same with Pink Floyd - I stopped "feeling it" in the early 80's. Thanks for the suggestion.

Recently been getting into J-rock/Metal bands like cold rain, maximum the hormone, band maid and MUCC. As an immigrant myself, always felt the music of rock and metal comforting. To me especially when I was lonely or felt like I had no value. Probably kept me sane, grounded and from ending myself. Especially lyrically, It always resonated with me and made me feel like I wasn't alone out here.

Your metal discovery journey is so similar to mine, from Linkin Park to Tool, to Black Sabbath and Rush, timeline is so similar to mine. And through the years I only expanded my taste. I feel like listening to metal doesn't confine you to one sound or genre, you're more open to other music.
    P. S.
Saw Jinjer 2 days ago, in Kyiv, Ukraine. It was sick. The band is amazing, they are for real.

For me, Metal is cathartic. What I think I love the most is the community it involves. It is a very accepting and caring community 99% of the time (every subculture has it's elitists). Most of the time you can listen to any music other than metal and the community will still accept you for who you are, especially if you just want to hang out with them for who they are. Even at concerts and festivals you have your obvious noobies to the genre but we still don't oust them. The way I see it is that we tend to be a family of outcasts and outliers. Many; if not all of us, know what it is like to be ostracized and ridiculed for your interests and in Metal we try not to do that to each other because that is no way to treat people. Personally, my top five are Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Slipknot, Manson, and Otep but I have guilty pleasures like Aqua, Jewel, Eminem, Nahko and Medicine for the People, Alcyon Massive, Trevor Hall, Peaches and most recently The Weeknd.

You're beautiful! Very interesting story, I believe I began with Linkin Park too. Awesome to know I'm not the only one. Great to discover an open female metalhead; most of the ones I've seen try to hide it because they're afraid they'll be teased for it. But honestly, everybody should be able to openly discuss their music taste without feeling embarrassed, which is why I'm happy to have found you. Definitely gonna watch more of your stuff.

First timer on your channel here hailing from Finland, the world renown mecca of metal LOL! I tried to go through the comments but couldn`t find a mention, if you know this already then more power to you! Speaking of power I`m a huge fan of Nordic/European melodic power metal which as far as I know is a bit more obscure of a subgenre in your side of the big pond. The reason I brought this up is a woman named Talia Bellazzecca. Now if someone can correct me on this one I`d be more than happy to find out I was wrong but as far as I know she is the ONLY dark skinned (cuban descent) left handed female metal guitarist in the world and boy can she play! To see her perform I`d recommend to watch the music video Neverending of the band she used to play til last year, Frozen Crown.
What comes to the metal community, I usually wear all black but I`m pretty short, don`t have long hair or big muscles or in any other way look like a "badass", I`ve been in different festivals and concerts of various music genres and ALWAYS felt the most safe and welcome amongst the metalheads. They don`t discriminate, they can laugh at themselves, they don`t take things too seriously ( of course there`s always the zealots but those can be found anywhere), bottom line they (or should I say we) don`t care if you`re white, black, Asian, man, woman, something in between, straight, gay, that`s irrelevant. I like metal, you like metal, we`re here to celebrate metal and that`s all that counts.

🇺🇸 American born son of the green and white here 🇳🇬 I’ve dabbled in some rock before......I could never really get into heavy metal though. My musical taste is rather eclectic......my library houses jazz, rap, r&b and soul to alternative, electronic, pop and soft rock. Really the only kind of music I cannot connect with on any level is country music. That being said, I definitely support and respect your musical preferences. To each his or her own! Respect! ✊🏿

I’ve been a metal head since I was ten years old. (I also love Jazz, Blues, Country, Reggae, Classical and old school rap/hip hop) but metal has.always been at the top of the list. I guess I love so many different genres of music because I am a guitar player. Anyway, when I see someone with a t-shirt that’s metal oriented, I don’t have a problem talking to them because I feel we are of the same “tribe”. When I’m at a concert, I feel as though I’m with my “tribe”. We stick together and respect one another in unison. I feel good about life when I’m with my “tribe”.
My brother took me to see Kiss when I was eleven years old and I was done. I went home and told my mother that I wanted to play the guitar for real. I also told her that I wanted to have long hair. I didn’t get that option.🤪. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. It was 1977 and I was hooked. By the time I was sixteen, I was in my first band. It’s been a wonderful trip and I’ve seen just about every band I’ve wanted to see and I’m.still listening to and seeing new bands all the time. The one thing that I would like to leave with you is, “Welcome to the tribe!” God Bless You in all that you do!
p.s. Some bands I like are Gemini Syndrome, Avenged Sevenfold, Nonpoint, Seether, and Bullet For My Valentine. (There’s about a thousand or so more!)

I'm 42, a white guy from the UK, and a metal head goth. One of the things that really got to me as I grew up was that people told me my musical tastes were very white, outdated and the music I listened to was dying out. You had to scour the radio after midnight for shows that played anything even close to metal. When Iron Maiden actually managed to get into the chart top 10 with 'Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter' I freaked.
It was only after the internet exploded and youtube kicked in that I really found access to other metal heads. Even then, they were mostly men, almost entirely white. It's only really been in the last year that I've been watching reaction videos and seeing mostly women and many black people loving and embracing metal. It warms my heart, SOOO much! Not only to see it but find out that you've all been there all along!
It always made me sad to think music was segregated along racial lines and finding out it was just a lie, that media was just pigeonholing us again, has made that sadness just melt away.

The metal community welcomes anyone and everyone. Race, gender, other basis for stereotypes and discrimination are irrelevant in the metal community. It's the music we all enjoy that brings us together regardless of all things that are said to divide us. An African immigrant woman who is a metalhead is not a surprise to metalheads. If it is a surprise to a metalhead,it's in a good way and they will quickly open discussion on various bands and look for common interests, suggest other bands, be open to suggested bands. It's the music that forms a camaraderie among metal heads of every stripe, stature, and flavor. Mosh it up ma'am. We love you here

Hey there! Verry nice video you made, and glad, that you did not let others distract, from what you really like! I had a simmilar experiance growing up, not fitting in with my class, who mainly listened to rap and hip-hop (which I never really liked). Btw, I'm also the son of immigrants.
System of a Down was one of my first bands, which blew me away in a verry good way. And regarding Tool, I 100% agree, till this day, one of the greatest musical gems I have ever heard, and still one of my absolute favorites.
If you have not heard of the following bands, I highly recomend you, to give it a listen: Gojira (Progressive Groove Metal, with deep lyrics about Life, Death and Environmental issues), Animals as Leaders (Jazz Metal, Djent, without singer but even more colourfull, technical and complex). Opeth (older stuff Progressive Death, never Jazz-Folk Rock and anything inbetween), just to name a few must known bands.
Lately I also got into Atmospheric Black Metal like Agalloch and Nechochwen.
    Best to you! :)

😃 I relate to this story so much, what I especially like about Metal is the whole time travel aspect, Lol. You find yourself listening to songs from the from 90s and 2000s, then go all the way back to 80s, 70s, 60s. This is the way I see it, Metal can be somewhat of a drug, (since it's related to acid rock and early blues hard rock), you get high on it and experience a wide range of emotions. It feels as though the songs are talking to you, they understand what you're going through, because they've felt that before or are feeling it now. Same with my other favourite types of media like anime, manga/comics, video games and pro wrestling, which coincidentally have had used a bit of Metal from time to time, Lol. I'm from South Africa, I mainly listen to a lot of black metal, death metal, melodeath, grindcore, metalcore and sludge. 🤟🏽

Music is universal. It speaks to us all in our own unique ways and in a lot of ways we all can share. Leave the haters and those that can't see past stereo types in the dust. They are not worth wasting your time on. I am an older guy and I hope to see many more young people get into this music regardless of ethnicity or religion ect. This genre of music needs young people to appreciate it but also maybe be inspired by it and become musicians themselves and take on the mantle. I know this video is over a year old and have just found it... but you have earned my respect and a sub just for your amazing attitude and because like millions of us, enjoy metal!

Yeah metal really does unite people man. For me It started when I was just beginning to go through a depressive time in my life and all the music I was listening to just made me feel so bad. I mostly listened to old classics like stevie wonder, don mclean etc, and I started to get this feeling that these were lying. (That sounds stupid and thats cause it was lol) And that need for something to comfort me drove me to metal. Its started with Rob zombie, and then blossomed into other bands like five finger death punch, metallica etc until I found one band that has really stuck with me. Pantera. Pantera to me is like tool to you, theyre music just seems so timeless and amazing its just hard to explain. Metalheads are always the nicest, most down to earth guys and the genre is full if hardworking bros unlike a lot of these other genres nowadays and it honestly has just been an amazing experience

when i was a child, i was about 4 i think and this was around 1989 or 1990. it was one of those times where it was like your first memories, ever, as a child. it was like i just opened my eyes i was already there, every memory of life started on that point,on that day. And the first ever song that i heard, was Guns n' roses's my michelle. it isnt exactly metal but it was known back then as heavy metal but it had a mix of hard rock and punk. ,So, being the first ever genre i ever heard, i just continued listening to it. but the time i got into metal it was already the 90s, the grunge era. but i wasnt ready to move on yet i went back listening to slayer, metallica, black sabbath, etc. i wanted more.. until i got to the point where i wanted to give grunge a chance, soundgarden was my favorite. from that moment on i moved on new stuffs and decided to kinda take a break from old school stuff. so thats it, for years all i heard was rock and metal. its my comfort zone. But also, i grew older, i already 29 now, i also started to appreciate other genres out of rock and metal. ive been listening to singers like seal, john mayer, gary clarke jr, justin timberlake, etc. but i always go back to that genre that started everything for me. Then, i started listening to this band called pink floyd. oh man,David gilmour is a musical genius, he influenced me to pick up a guitar and learn how to play it. for years i practiced his tecniques. Im still nowhere near perfecting his style. but im learning new things everyday.. i even started my yt channel now,i uploaded well 1 video so far. but its gonna be a guitarcover videos channel. ill be playing my favorite rock and metal songs. old and new.
