I definitely have a hard time understanding parents charging their children rent to live at home, especially when the child is still a full-time student. This seems more common in the UK (compared to Canada) but maybe I’m wrong.
It is also quite common in Germany, even though I never understood the reasons behind it, but that might be because my mom didn't understand it herself, but when the children might get more money than the parents themselves it seems quite fair that they contribute to the costs as well. I do pay for groceries quite frequently but just because I like shopping and don't expect my parents to give me the money back even though they often do
…I’m an American and the differences in prices for degrees is insane. Going to a prestigious university (Harvard, Columbia, ect) without a scholarship costs 50k for tuition and ~20k for accommodations PER YEAR!!! I said no to my acceptance to my dream university and no to a presidential scholarship (the highest form of merit scholarship available) at another prestigious university because of the price and choose a state university instead (which was still amazing, particularly because of COVID!). My brain hurts 😭😭
It’s more a comparison between online classes/cursus and in person classes/cursus rather than a comparison of their substantial programs. But it was very interesting !
yes this is true! as i said, it is a veryyyy very difficult comparison because they differ in so many ways! . . . i'm actually going to modify the title now (i've only just now been reading the comments) 😅
@@HollyGabrielle Yes I understand it must be very difficult, but it was very insightful and interesting anyway ! Thank you for sharing your perspective on online and in person classes with us !!
Seeing quite a few comments that are surprised about you paying rent to your parents so just thought I'd say that mine did the same once I started full-time work! It's much less than I'll pay once I move out so I really don't mind tbh, nice to help out
You would really hate exams in Literature and in Law haha They're pretty much all open books exams and 24 hours long xD I mean, in Literature we had almost no exam, they were almost all just papers, which is almost the same as a written-open-book-24-hours exam... And in Law, exams are pretty much all open books. Not all, but almost all. I don't think they're usually 24 hours though. I think it was just for the online terms because everyone had a different schedule and some were outside the country and they wanted to make sure everyone was okay and had time to do it without dealing with time zones and kids (some students are parents), I guess... Normally it would be 3 hours long in class, I think... Also, I don't know if that's a program thing or a country thing, but we also get assignments and exams graded towards around final grade all the time. Like every class (5 per semester, so 10 per year) have 2 to 3 papers or exams and they all count towards your final grade during the whole 3 years... We don't have one year or one class that counts for more... Every single class is 3 credits and every exam is 25-30-40-50-60% of your grade in that class, depending on how the professor even things out with the amount of papers/exams. (Some do 2 exams that count for 50% each, some do 2 that counts for 40 and then 60%, some will add a third assignments, usually a dissertation or a take home exam to lower each pourcentage at around 30% each with the final exam being 40%, etc. Or mini quizzes each class that are worth like 3% but make up for about 25-30% of your grade at the end when put all together.) Same for Master's Degree classes (and it's 2 years long in Canada. First year is classes and then second year is writing your dissertation. They are longer though, I think. They're around 200 pages wheras I think in places where it's one year, it's around 100 pages, but I could be mistaken. Ph.D is 4 years or more if part-time and dissertations are around 400-500 pages.) Also, the fees are the same no matter were you go... All universities (exept two random religious universities on the West Coast) are public and they charge the same fees for in-province students and then the same thing for international students, etc.
The Open University degrees are quite expensive. I remember that when I did my MA in Classical Studies Part 1, it costed over $5,000 in Canadian money and the MA in Classical Studies part 2 over $11,000 in Canadian money. That is one of the reasons that I do not want to do anymore degrees because they are too expensive.
idk if there will be another video before your marathon so just wanna say this on behalf of your yt fam "GO KILL IT HOLLY!!!!" TBH I'm kinda nervous for it like I have to run or something😅!
This video should have been titled studying in person vs studying online as most of the things that you’ve mentioned as bad about ucl came as a result of covid :/ ucl is still the 8th best uni in the world so uni experience, exams etc would have been so much better if it wasn’t during the year that the world was basically falling apart🤷🏼♀️
I agree.. I don’t think it’s really a fair comparison since her experience at UCL was completely tainted by the restrictions imposed as a result of the pandemic :/ so it would’ve been very different if it were in person..
i did say that it was basically impossible to compare them, but i thought it would be interesting to look at different aspects?! anyway, i have only just been reading some of the comments now and i'll modify the title slightly! thanks ema, i'm always open to feedback 😊
hey holly, when you said some of your essays weren’t marked, would the professors go over it with you verbally? or could you ask about them in supervisions? ly!
no, i didn't get any feedback unfortunately, and in third year you had to organise your own supervisions. as this was coming towards the end of the year i didn't actually sort these out because i didn't have time!!
Never been to University have I missed out something?😭 Excellent video beautiful, lovely and gorgeous Holly. What is the food like in University student cafes? I have been to College and some of the options aren't the best.Love🥰 the video and love 💕Holly.
It's crazy and it never used to be this way. It used to be free in the UK and you'd also get a grant to help towards living expenses. Then fees came in at £1000 per year and they've just been going up and up since.
@@HollyGabrielle Thanks for the answer! I can suggest you would use it. Anki is a flashcard creation program. It helps studying with using active recall and spaced repetition techniques.

I'm trying to decide where to do my MRes/Masters, I cant afford cambridge (Brexit yay) but UCL is an option so thanks for this!
Same for me ! Brexit…
@julia ganea Do you mean a student loan? Also cant get that because of brexit 😅 I'm from the EU so dont need a visa
no worries at all, i'm glad you found it useful and good luck with your applications!
My uni told me to get a student visa because of Brexit but my problem was mostly fees and tuition which are very expensive now…

you can't really compare the two because ucl was online and only 1 year
It’s interesting to compare those differences though
as i said in the video, it's basically impossible to compare them . . . but i wanted to consider a few broad aspects of them both! 😊
When in Italy most unis are public and cost between 500-2000€ a year :)))
