This is the way to eat for a long, healthy life . I am familiar with some of the green leafy vegetables cuz we also eat them in the Philippines. This is a good insight into traditional village food n cooking we rarely come across in u tube. Indian food is really amazing, one of the best cuisines n I love it!
Marie many it's in tamilnadu south of India.. and it's harvesting festival celebrated in the month of January and according Tamil calendar its Thai month. This season is harvesting time for farmers.. Pongal is name of the festival which celebrated on Thai month and hence Thai Pongal. Also first you see rice boiled which is Pongal in pot. Pongal is also dish name
All ingredients look very healthy am really liking these videos, except for the frying I thought traditional cooking wouldn't include that much stirring in oils, thank you for filming it
" Happy Pongal" (Farmer Festival) to every one----Pongal-O-Pongal . To All the people in this world.... Please create awareness...That our future generation should not relies much on Genetic Modified Seeds and crops. Lets create future..in Join Hands....
Yes it looks native and fresh. And I happen to taste every single item shown in this video. The mixed beans curry with vegetables was mouth tingling. But we could hardly eat the other items. Sorry to say the truth... cleanliness is also :( :(
Although this kind of looks like pongal, it really isn't. It is just an idea of what the real dish would look like but there are several key ingredients missing. I also want to point out that onions and shredded coconut don't mix well together in dry curries. Some folks tend to put onions and garlic in everything but it's not the right way to do it.
This is what real pongal is! What you get to eat in the restaurants are modified versions of pongal. When it is offered to the farm deity or to cows, it's mixed with mashed banana and brown sugar. Without onions and coconut combination there is hardly any South Indian dishes.
Pongal has two key ingredients - white rice and moong dal. It's not just any old thing that overflows from a pot. As someone else pointed out, this just looks like a bunch of random things put together with very little effort. I know for a fact that I wouldn't want to eat it.
Ofcourse you know everything about pongal. And you must be a scholar in traditions, aren't you? Who asked your opinion? Who prayed you to eat it? This is how it supposed to be made and this is how it is eaten. Why would you simply spread hatred? One can see even from this edited video how much effort is takes to prepare this meal. Don't simply spread hate. Now shut up and leave.
chappentr I wonder why you are so critical. it's not easy to get videos like this to us especially for urbanised Indians like us. this is how my great grandfathers prepared their meal with very basic things. it's so edifying for us to watch. Sometimes I feel like I miss those simple tasty food. if you Don like just buzz off. pls Don give critical comments. if you are smart then produce your own video and shoe your culinary skills.
Paste is mixture of Coconut + Dry Chilies + Dhaniya + Cumin Seeds + chana dal + Garlic + Curry Leaves + Small Onion . Fry all the above ingredients in oil and grind them. You get the masala paste...
What were the beans that were boiled together in the big pot? There were several types of beans but I could only recognise horse gram and black-eyed peas. Hope you can explain about the other types of beans. BTW this is the best video from you so far - this is a real feast.

Let me list the dishes so it will be helpful. 1. Raw rice and moon beans - it's called pongal 2. Pumpkin dish (actually a side) called poriyal 3. Flat beans (side as well) - poriyal 4. Curry (similar to stew) - Chick peas, horsegram, Lima beans, plantain, aubergines, shallots, potatoes and spices 5. Elephant yam (side) - poriyal 7. Muligatawny soup - rasam 6. Appalam / Pappadam
Item No. 4 is almost sambar. Recipe is almost the same. Difference is Toor Dal is not used and Asafoetida (Perumkayam/Hing) is not used. We call it koottu curry.
JarJarBinks, May be people who live in metropolitan cities may cook rice in milk. But not in villages or at least in the region where this family is from. Rice and the lentils are washed and that water is called kazhineer. Folks boil that water, as you see in this video and it is well able to overflow. Then they will cook the rice. Mostly in farms, people don't do three days, it's a tiresome work. So, they do the pongal in anyone of the day in the farm and then it is offered with bananas and brown sugar, to farm deity and to the cows as well. Since it is offered to cows milk is often avoided, or else the cows won't eat it.
We do have chairs and table. Whilst having a traditional meal we opt to sit down on the floor and eat. It is a form of yoga, it will avoid you from over eating and helps to keep obesity at bay.

Avy Amanda hello do you able to sat like them i mean in that posture.if so your lucky. most of Westerners even rich indians are not able to sit in this position, its seems to be yoga like exercise for them. if we fail to follow the customs what our ancestors told. then we face lot of problems i n day to day life.
Avy Amanda we already suffered a lot due to modern life style practices, this is what we left. once upon a time we thought diabetes, heart attack, and obesity were disease suffered by rich people or by karma, now it is the problem faced by command man and even leyman. Because of the so called modern life style. we forget our farming method, food preparation, and so many.
i wish i could afford to build those women a fire stove that was taller so they dont have to keep bending over. i bet there backs and legs hurt real bad alot. food looks so good what a talent to be able to cook something so great.
Is it Pongal now ? I thought it was Navratri (Dasara). Well, the rice seems to be over cooked. Is it supposed to be mushy/pasty ? I am going to try this at home - cooked rice with moong dal. I wont use raw rice. Let me try parboiled rice that is not over cooked.
Keep the water of cooked horse gram ,another one no idea .in that add crushed tomatoes & tamarind . Now squeeze the tamarind well in that water. Finally, in oil add mustard, red chilli, curry leaves, onions.saute it & add above mixed water.

Jo C
Jo C pongal is made from newly harvested raw rice. and the texture is overcooked only.
A freshly harvested white rice will cook very quickly n it will become mushy. its traditional food n its done mushy.
