    -Is that it?
    -Ehh...yeah. Pretty much.
    As a fan of the Nouvelle Vague and À bout de souffle I disagree with nearly everthing Mark said, BUT: I want this on a t-shirt.

    Can’t lie, I found this review quite annoying. Usually if I don’t agree with Mark I still respect his opinion, but someone with influence on filmmakers and film fans shouldn’t discredit such influential work, that changed film so drastically and influences most directors to this day.
    Tarantino references Godard directly in most of his films, and most directors reference the French New Wave still, as the jumps it made from the Hitchcock 50s were so drastic.
    I’m surprised he’s discredited one of the most exciting movements in cinema, reducing it to ‘jump cuts’.
    Still respect Mark but surely he has some responsibility to the audience!

    • @mollers92
      @mollers92 3 года назад +1

      I mean, if you watch it back that's about all that's worth keeping from it. Just about everything else has aged terribly.

    • @samtsk
      @samtsk 3 года назад +12

      @@mollers92 So... self awareness/awareness of the audience at the ascendance of post modernism. The birth of auteur theory. The notion of not having to spoon feed audiences information. Real location shooting with smaller, handheld cameras, instead of big cameras in studio sets, that gave cinema a HUGE refresh, when Hollywood was plummeting with its studio contracts? perhaps its you who should watch it back? 💁‍♂️
      The French New Wave has influenced all modern cinema, for Mark to have discredited it is damaging to young people, who may gain a wealth of insight into cinema from the French New Wave (like I did).

    I've struggled with Godard for years; with a few exceptions I just haven't found his films all that entertaining, yet I keep coming back hoping I'll finally get it. Maybe if I were a young person when Breathless premiered its innovations would hit me more profoundly (I compare my relationship with Godard to young people who weren't alive when Pulp Fiction came out and think Tarantino is "just okay"). Still, it's nice to see a respected film critic who seems to be on the same wavelength as me where Jean-Luc is concerned.

    • @mediaikonz
      @mediaikonz 3 года назад +4

      It honestly helped me to go back and look at influences of Godard, especially when it comes to a specific piece. For example, I love Le Mepris but had a hard time understanding it. Then I read that he was inspired by Rossellini's Viaggio in Italia and after seeing that I feel like I have a better understanding of how he views and makes film.

  • @nicheman3612
    @nicheman3612 3 года назад +6

    Fun fact - Godard is the only New Wave director to extensively use jump cuts (Agnes Varda sort of does as well). Anyway the French New Wave is definitely not without it's flaws and many of the films are dated. But cinema would not the same without it and there are many films that are still brilliant (Hiroshima Mon Amour, Rohmer's Moral Tales, La Bonheur for example). Kermode seems to dismiss it in a way he wouldn't with any other movement from around the world. I guess he likes to indulge in the salt-of-the-earth Little Englander mindset sometimes.

    Terrible review. I'm no great fan of the film either but it's undeniably influential and the re-release provides an opportunity for much of the moviegoing and radio-listening public to experience and make up their own mind about an important moment in cinema history. Not that you'd know that from these comments: instead we get prevarication, dismissal, wilful ignorance and the same tired jokes from previous godard reviews and, I'm sure, future godard reviews.
    Anyone who is interested in film as a medium should watch A Bout De Soufflé. At the very least, it's a reminder of the great and challenging potential of independent cinema and its DIY ethos.

    I dont mind that Kermode doesn’t care for Godard or Breathless (it’s a fun little film though) or seemingly any French movies (he’s English so biologically I guess he cannot.) Though saying that 1980s remake of Breathless is anything less than a pitiful slog (how can you remake a film with no plot and make it even longer? The Lion King CGI remake did something similar: added 30mins but zero new content) is ridiculous. Though at the very end where Gere is randomly dancing in the street was pretty funny.
    However, a movie such as Uncut Gems? Now *that* is the real American version of Breathless. That film tapped into the filmmaking fever of directors like Godard and left you “out of breath”.
