- Is there a such thing as too much light? On today's episode, we use some high speed science to answer that question. I teamed up with Rigid Industries (who provided over 300,000 lumens of bolt on lighting) and took my SVC Offroad Ford Raptor to the middle of the Utah desert in the middle of the night to find out if more light = more speed!
This also happens to be the very first full-look at my SVC Offroad built Ford Raptor since it’s most recent round of upgrades. We sent it out to SVC to get an all new wide-body by Fiberwerks (painted by LNC Motorsports), new reflective graphics inspired by my 2020 race livery by Troy Lee Designs, rad custom Borla Exhaust system, more suspension upgrades, a new bed cage setup, and a fabricated F9 rear-end with a locker and full float axles by Currie Enterprises. It also features my brand new “Block” signature wheels by Fuel Off-Road wrapped in 40” Toyo Tires!

You need one switch labeled "THE SUN", which is connected to all the lights in your vehicle.
Or just “DAYTIME”

Its a collapsing star. Like, there needs to be a light bar on the market called the Collapsing Star that puts out over 100k lumens.
On to my rambling okay,
The current brightest individual bar on the market as far as I can see is the Vision X XIL-PX9010 at 47520 lumens (raw lumens not effective lumens at 33k) and it draws a monstrous 37.5 amps at 12 volts. But that thing has a 10 degree beam and costs like 2200 USD. You'd need a dedicated 100 amp alternator to run a 100k lumen bar, which since the light would come from one bar as the source, it really would be a collapsing star, it'd be a constant flashbang of light, considering that a flashbang is 2600 lumens from a small point source and across a huge light bar 100k would probably equal a similar intensity to a flashbang. Though the heat would be absurd. Okay I'm done rambling XD

Yeah, I haven't checked the specs of these lights, but with 140 lm/W LEDs it is around 2-2.5kW, about 140-170 Amps @ 14.4V.
2 large battery units in the back flat-bed helping supply light juice!! 😎
I want this set-up for all those times the guy driving toward me at night is oblivious to the fact he still has his brights on...
Its funny you say that because most new cars have an auto light sensor that turns their lights off when it is bright enough and my light bar is bright enough to trigger it. Bmws are really easy to trigger it so instead of blinding everyone, they get no lights
@@chrisbeatty743 I don't think the light sensor is nearly as sensitive as it should be (or as I perceive it should be) in all those new cars.

@@therobb5738 Yeppers, usually 2-3 weeks MH then switch to HPS, the early blue light actually makes a big difference

My 630w cmh fixture out-prrforms my 1000w gavitas.
RT 1.5 lbs off of 630watts

A Good CMH set-up costs as much as 10x HID lights. I can run those HID lights for 2-3 grows before i match the price of a CMH light, without factoring in power....

You should look at the XeVision New XeTREME HIGH INTENSITY LED lights for AIRCRAFT, significant illumination even WELL BEYOND 1/3 mile. 100 watt each LED lights that don't dim as they "warm up" as the others ALL do (these have active cooling). Nothing anywhere comes close to this performance in a 4.5 inch form factor. 11,000 lumens and 320,000 Candela from each unit. About a 10 degree round beam angle.
Also a 35 degree wide beam 10 degrees tall model as well.

Hey Ken is there any way you can be made a list of everything that is on your truck. I own a 17 raptor and I completely love the setup of your truck. The borla exhaust setup is awesome.
All those lights did not really do much! barely lit up 100ft
Get some Lightforce HTX2 LED spotlight 2 x 9" round and they shine 1.65kms up the road at 1 lux, then you just have some smaller striker twin pack and angle them out to the side so you can see animals at the side of the road at night.

Rigid isn't a cheap brand. You can get the total rated amount of lumens for cheaper, but you really do get what you pay for.
They're called light 'bars'. Just saying.
In 2006 I had linear actuators and photo electric sensors steering my adaptive light bar on my Funco. Same year Mercedes/BMW came out with a similar adaptive lighting method. Lights steer when the car steers allowing the light to bend through the turn. Position of each light was crucial. The up/down/left/right override was clutch. I could drive forward and hang the lights hard right to see camps as I was driving at night through the dunes.
However the the function of being able to lift or lower the lights was crucial for climbing the big dunes at Glamis. Can’t believe I’ve never seen anyone else do this.

You should call that truck "LightSpeed". (Or "LightSteed", if you prefer. That would be a better name for a Mustang, though.) You could make graphics for the truck like *[LIGHT=SPEED]* (with the equals sign a fair amount smaller than the text size for the rest).

Fun fact those rally pods can house amber fog lights so it can be used on regular road cars.
So, I've never tried it, but apparently amber or yellow are better for fog, rain, and snow, but for desert racing, you want to lean towards the blue end of the light spectrum.

I stuck the Imalent MS18 Flashlight out my window the other night... 100,000 Lumens is insane! Made my BMW Xenon headlights look dim.
On my 1989 Suburbillac (3/4 ton 4X4 with 8.2L Cadillac) I put on light bars. My joke was that when deer jumped through the beams, they were cooked by the time they got to the other side of the road.

This video is certainly not covering all kinds of driving conditions. There definitely is times when too much light is bad. I.E. dense fog, dust , heavy snow, blowing/drifting snow. Also where you mount your bright
lightbars can be a big deal for when it’s effective. Mounting lights above the windshield can be an issue. It makes it hard to see through dense fog, snow harder, causing eye strain, also it creates glare off the vehicles hood. It might not be a problem if you have other light bars mounted lower on a bumper or in the grill. Where you can go without it. But if it’s the only light you plan on mounting. Lower light is more functional. Also the beam pattern is possibly the most important decision to make. Spot lights are good, if accompanied by flood/driving lights. Spot light beams are nothing useful in dense fog or heavy snow.
How much light is too much? When you exceed the brightness of the sun....otherwise there no such thing as too much light and you being a rally driver know that Ken.
Now the exceptions. Limited visibility where high powered lights can reflect back at you. ie ...snow, heavy rain, fog, and dust.
The most fun is no headlights and a full moon. Don't try this at home kids.

Weird question, what can I install on a 2012 Chevrolet spark to increase my night time visibikity in poorly lit roads. Not in US. I have glaucoma and i live in a country where roads lights are barely used at night.
I use to run a 36" light bar on the bumper with pods on the end. 8" hood light bar. And 2 offroad lights on the roof.
