Respect and kudos to you, and congratulations on passing the HSK 3!
Gee, reading, writing, speaking, and understanding? That is quite a feat!
Some Asian languages are VERY difficult for Western-language speakers (e.g. English) to grasp because languages like Chinese and Vietnamese are tonal and/or the writing is so different, just as examples. At least Vietnamese has a Romanized alphabet with variation of real A's, B's, and C's - not characters - so that makes it way easier than Chinese for writing.
I am an American-born white woman married to a Vietnamese-Chinese man (born in Vietnam). We've been together over 40 years, married over 38 of those years. He is fluent in Vietnamese, but rather limited with his Mandarin (and knows only a handful of Cantonese words).
I try to explain "tones" to my friends and family and they have a difficult time grasping the concept. I'll give an example with just a couple of words and usually get back, "It sounds the same to me!" (Even for me, it was like a shift had to take place in my brain before it all fell into place and made sense.) Only my sister really got it right away, probably because she was a linguistics / Russian major in college.
You are lucky to have the support of your husband and mother-in-law (lol, she looks more like your sister-in-law!). My husband wasn't too keen on me learning Vietnamese. I told him that it's really a shame because I could have been fluent by now. It makes me kind of mad, even resentful sometimes, because my first exposure to the language was when I was 16, so my brain was primed. It would have been a lot easier to learn when he and I were first together. In fairness to him, he wanted to improve his English because he was fairly new to the U.S. (Nhưng mà, ¡que lastima que yo hablo el español mejor que la vietnamita! [But it's too bad I speak Spanish better than Vietnamese!])
So even though you're not 16, you still have an advantage over me because of your youth.
It's wonderful that you speak Chinese with Sophia and read books to her. Keep that up! It is excellent for her intellectual development, and not just for language. She'll be able to switch back and forth between English and Chinese, like there's nothing to it.
The cultural aspect is also very important because knowing about the culture definitely helps with the language, both verbal and non-verbal.
I don't know about where you live [in Canada], but some places have Chinese schools for children. My neighbor sent all 4 of his kids to Chinese school, even though it was already spoken in the home. Sophia is long way from that now, though!
If you're interested sometime, I can tell you a true story about a girl who rejected Chinese school at some point and later regretted it.

Thank you SO much for your thoughtful comment! Yes, I definitely agree that I am very lucky to have my husband and mother in law here to support me and teach me Chinese culture. Chinese is definitely a difficult language to learn, especially as an adult. I have also heard that Vietnamese is incredibly hard! I think if it's something you really want to do, you can definitely learn Chinese or Vietnamese! I started out by watching Chinese TV shows with subtitles and after hearing Chinese conversation over and over you start to catch on to some phrases! We live in western Canada and are very lucky to have some Chinese schools here, but also we want to live in China for a couple of years and travel there a lot as well. Wishing you the best! 😊

First of all congrats for passing HSK 3 and many thanks for giving us your success tips.
about me, I passed both HSK1&2 but due to neglecting to memorize the characters and new words I suffered when I arrive at the HSK3 level
I can't read at all I tried my best but I need the best way to get ready for the real exam next September, as well as I, need really to master it

Thank you! I think the best way is to try and memorize some of the characters from hsk 1 and 2 first because they really do build the base for a lot of the compound words in hsk 3. Also I really like all the free hsk practice tests online. They really help show if there is a particular set of words you are struggling with.

Love you! Thanks! I enrolled in Intermediate online class on a univ recently. But I didn’t know it was all in Chinese unlike Chi schools in my country doesn’t focus on the characters adding to the fact that I haven’t studied Chi in months. So u know, it was a crazy month for me. I can’t even read characters! Hahahah! But been starting to read through short stories and now I’m familiar with some characters! Glad I found your channel since I’m going to take HSK3 as well (required by the school). 🥺 I’ll be sure to watch your vids for my listening and will check out ur insta! Thanks a lot! Actually just knowing u are also studying makes me feel a little less lonely 😭❤️ Bless u and ur beautiful fam!

Awww thank you for your comment! I didn't get a notification from RUclips so I am just seeing it now! Hang in there and it will get easier. I love the Chinese books that use the basic 500-1000 characters for reading and recognizing characters. I found a couple from amazon. When I studied in Taipei I was in the same situation because my university didn't focus on characters, and I remember sitting in a cafe for like 4 or 5 hours everyday writing characters over and over. What a time lol!

Currently I'm studying for my HSK 4 and still use a lot of these resources, but I've also added in using chatgpt and a Chinese zero to hero course for HSK 4. I talk about it more in my video about a year ago talking titled How I study for HSK 4. :)

It's the third level of the Chinese proficiency test "汉语水平考试".
