Far too often we see hospitals release people who are truly needing help you need to remain in mental health custody. The reevaluation of the entire system needs to happen
My son went inpatient, due to BS crap insurance they would only cover 3 days. He NEEDED alot more. Ended up attempting his life & in a different place finally for longer. Our health system is messed up
....and far too often we see people acting/pretending to be mentally ill or having a genuine mental illness but exaggerating symptoms to excuse/avoid consequences for crimes.

lately is right. so many people have moved into idaho in the last few years that we were one of the fastest growing states in the US. locals like myself are tired of it, and we've been asking ourselves the same question you asked. most of these high-profile crazies you'll find out are from out of state. that's not to say we don't have our own homegrown killers, and idk anything about this man, but they're few and far between. normally it's pretty quiet here, so when something actually does happen, it tends to make the news.

IMO, I’ve heard inmates say they’d rather be dead, than having to live the rest of their lives in solitary confinement. Some people think, this is torture, but I look at it like the misery they will have to endure, will give the victim/victims much more justice. This consequence seems more fitting than knowing, this will eventually end. Instead they will never know how many years they will be required to live before this ends.

All in all, there is very low crime here. It’s mostly out of towners who are flooding this area. But it does happen on occasion. Look into the Joseph Duncan case that happened, that was evil
He told people while he was naked in the store that he was on meth and hadn't slept for days. How does that play into everything? Was he even checked to see if he was high on meth? Probably not. There's probably some law to protect drug users.

I did a research paper on the DP, not from a moral POV, just cost-wise. It costs more to have the DP than a life sentence. There are so many costs involved - three levels of appeal (state court, state supreme court, US supreme court - at each level there is paperwork and personnel, defense and prosecuting counsel. They have separate housing units, the cost of personnel and equipment for the execution, etc., etc, etc.

Fascinating discussion about a tragic case. I have mixed feelings about capital punishment. Even if I believed in it theoretically, I would be reluctant to use it in practical reality.
My #1 concern is the risk of executing the wrong person. My additional concerns include the enormous expenditures of time, money, & emotion.
