One thing about emergencies. You always need hot water. As the old saying goes, flames are for boiling, coals are for broiling. So, when you are first starting your Rocket stove have a big camping style coffee pot full of water ready to set on the stove when you've got big flames. Once the flames settle down a bit you can take off the water and set it aside. Then put your frying pan on and bring it up to frying temperature.
You will feed a stick into the fire box from time to time to keep the temperature steady. After taking off the frying pan stoke up the fire again and put the water back on. When it's time to wash the dishes the hot water will be ready.
I found a brand new camping coffee pot, like Walmart sells, at the thrift shop half price day and paid 1.75 for it, also a 150.00 pair of hiking boots, never worn and my size for 4.50. My lucky day I think!!
I'm so glad I found this channel. It's great to see a well-informed, scientifically-trained prepper. It's truly refreshing. That fact that you are also a woman makes it even better for ME. 😊
This is absolutely amazing! You are, by all means, my all-time favorite video blogger! TY for all the HARD WORK you have put into letting us all know the "how-tos" of everything!! The best part of all your videos is for those who can't afford items you use, you always show the alternitive. Thank you again!!!
I have 2 Rocket Stoves and 2 of the camp style cast iron dutch ovens. I've been experimenting with cooking for my family. At one point, we had no electricity fo 5 days, and we couldn't even boil water! I burned part of the break loaf, but I didn't know about turning the dutch oven 1/4 turn every 15 minutes and turning the lid 1/4 turn in the opposite direction. I have the same model of Rocket Stove and love it.
If you haven't figured out how to bake on your rocket stove: use your dutchoven. Put you dough in a smaller pan. Put some sort of rack in the bottom of the dutch oven, caning jar rings will work, set the pan of dough in the Dutch oven put the lid on it and bake your bread. I would check it in about 15 minutes,.
It sure is beautiful, I have a rocket stove just like that, I also used the cinder blocks but from my experience after awhile they crack from too high of a heat..The EcoZoom is wonderful, have a wonderful day
So good to watch these videos the pioneering spirt is still with Americans I love these you really are for the outdoors and have the fabulous scenery temperatures for it all
I watched a RUclips video where the man made his own fire starters using the cardboard egg crates. He added dryer lint in each cup, and then took a lit candle and dripped the hot wax over each individual cup containing the dryer lint balls. Then once they were dried he tore off only what he needed to use in his wood burning stove with kindling and wood to ignite his fire. Much safer than using Vaseline and less toxic as well.

I just to find a grill piece for the top. Bread baking is certainly something I want to do outdoors if ever needed.
I watch a family from Europe cook outside. She constructed a oven outside to bake her homemade bread. The base was a tree stump. On top she made a wood frame such as tree branches. Then filled frame with hay. She then made a clay mixture up and cover the frame and hay up inside and out. She then fire it up to dry the clay. She also made a small door to close oven hole up if needed. Great idea for an outside oven. Hers was a smaller version. It wasn’t huge.

Cast iron needs to be used with caution on rocket stoves though. Cast iron does have a high temp limit even though most people don't seem to think it does. If a rocket stove is running fully they could easily hit 6-700 degrees. At them temps cast iron can crack. Even a lot of porcelain coated cast iron dutch ovens reccomend not to use above 450-500. Nonstick cookware is rated even lower in most cases. Just something I thought might be worth mentioning. A lot of people aren't all that experienced cooking directly over wood fire that is harder to keep consistent. I have a keyhole fire ring I use a lot with a grill over the narrow part and tripod over the round part. Fire burns in the round part and I rake coals under the grill. I can hang a dutch oven from the tripod. The grill I can use as a grill or for cookware at lower temps. It is a very relaxing, slow life down, way to cook. In the meantime the kids can roast hotdogs, sausages, pie iron sandwiches, or whatever it's really great. Also as a 30+ yr electrician that has busted out hundreds of cinder blocks, a regular metal framing hammer works better. The dead blow hammer(rubber mallet) spreads the impact out in to broad of an area. Another thing that works great for the block built stoves is topping it with an old gas stove burner rack.
The breakfast looks wonderful. I love listening to the birds in your area. I recognize sounds from the Morning Dove, I’m not sure about the others maybe a raven or crow and sparrow? Thank you for sharing. I enjoy your videos they are always informative and you seem like a kind person.❤️
Thank you! Yes, we have lots of doves along with many others as well. Sadly, I am not much of a bird person, so I don't know which songs come from which birds!
My husband has always been curious about Rocket stoves and this video prompted us to look into making one. When we camp we often try to make some of our 'usual' meals with non-conventional means - just to know that we can do it. Looking forward to your video on the folding oven, it will likely get us to use ours more. Thanks for sharing there are other ways to get the job done ... BTW, the eggs looked delicious!!! Stay safe.
That is awesome! And creative! I am still practicing with that oven before we do the video. Probably will be in a couple of weeks. Thanks for your comments.
@@RoseRedHomestead Our latest challenge has been cooking with stackable dutch ovens and briquettes. Made a pork roast and baked potatoes last summer and it was really good. Actually, it's the best way to make baked potatoes. For the folding oven, silicone baking cups and other shapes will likely work. It's tough to find a muffin tin or those type of baking containers that fit the space (quite small). Good luck with your testing!
LOL! As they say, misery loves company! And anyway, how can anyone possible make scrambled eggs wrong when in the end they are scrambled ? Thanks for making me laugh!

Maybe Jim would know how it would work or not Have a great day , Just a thought. Ginny from Jacksonville Fla
If you haven’t already purchased the Super Pot, consider getting one. Heating water, making soups and stews, it is very efficient. A little pricey but really well worth it once you have used it for a while. I love my StoveTec rocket stoves.
Thankyou so much for sharing all about how to prepare food and put it up. You have given me confidence to try some new things. I wish I had known this years ago.
TY for this great demonstration using your rocket stove. You are a great teacher. I especially liked the demo of making your own stove. The eggs looked great. Would you make a video making the French breakfast puffs and cremefr ?

Super Pot is sold by StoveTec on their website. It is double wall construction so it utilizes most of the heat produced by the StoveTec rocket stove. Perfect fit for the cast iron cook surface on the stove. I can bring water to boiling faster on a rocket stove using this pot than by placing a regular stew pot on a propane Camp Chef burner.
My first stove when I was a kid was a camp fire 🔥. It was hard in the winter, it was so cold to cook and warm water. Melted alot of snow to wash clothes and baby diapers.
Oh my goodness--what an experience. I remember when I was about 8 years old I had to operate our washing machine--the old wringer type--and do the family laundry. I would hang up the diapers outside on the clothesline and in the winter, they would freeze! Got my arm caught in the wringer
@@RoseRedHomesteadI thought I was the only person whose arm got stuck in a wringer!!! I was 5. Oh God did I holler! I thought my arm was going to come off. 😖😀
@@RoseRedHomestead when we lived on Guam, I got both arms caught in the wringer. My parents had gone shopping and my dad's Chaplains asst. Was watching and doing laundry, I got to I close and got caught. I remember he hit the emergency release and bounced me on my parent's bed..guess he thought I would have heart failure. My little arms were fine, just an accident. He had quick response time, I was in above my elbows. With this many of us relating this, it must have been a common occurrence. We could be the "wringer washer gals"!! Lol🥰
I tried a Coleman camp oven on a propane cook top in a motor home. They took 45 min, 15 longer than a conventional oven, and were paletable. However, the we're delicious in a pinch 😋
great video & information, fun to see you doing the construction.. we also have an ecozoom versa from Amazon.. and a couple home made .. my husband got excited about them a few years ago & has put together a couple, from used cans of different sizes.. but none from concrete blocks & oh my gravy, he saves every little branch & twig from fallen limbs from the Fir & Cedar trees around our property, which is a lot here in the PNW.. he even saves the cones that fall after they dry, I think we have 3- 30 gallon trash cans full of cones.. and a couple of twigs.. I'm afraid to actually count, lol, he stores them between the garage & fence so out of sight.. & to this day we havent cooked a thing on any of them.. lol, I showed him your video & he said ALRIGHT!!!! lol... thank you! Blessings!
For the cinder bock rocket stove, I saw an alternate method on youtube. Instead of breaking the end off a cinder block, you can replace that particular part of the stove with two long paver stones and a brick for the back wall part. It would look like the letter "H" from above. I don't know if it would make the whole thing less sturdy, but it seemed to work. I wonder if these types of stoves would disintegrate over time, being heated and cooled...
Thanks! Looks from your image that you are an astronomy enthusiast. We are trying to sell our 12" Meade. It is getting too heave for us to carry! We took our small telescope out last night to see how close Saturn and Jupiter are to each other...amazing! Don't miss it!
A couple comments regarding the CMU homemade rocket stove. I've seen many a skilled Mason use a Mason's Hammer to chisel away CMU block to make new blocks similar to what you were trying to achieve. A Mason's Hammer has a single fine point on the back side similar to a claw hammer but used like a chisel. The trick is to nibble away from the edges which are the weakest points of the block. Then slowly chip away little bits at a time. The other comment is that CMU block is not intended to take high heat. Rocket stoves can produce very very high heat and the The lock is likely to crack and possibly even explode, so I would use caution and do this only as a last resort. Alternatively, if you have enough block or even want to build something permanent, you could build a large grill with fire brick liner on the inside, which is specifically discount to take high heat- - it is often used on the inside of fireplaces and pizza ovens
On another yt video a guy was making a cinder block stove like this...he used a metal hammer and chipped away starting from one edge of the cinder block end until he removed the whole end of the block. You're trying to do it all in one, massive stroke!
@Jan Sytsma Hey Jan, you can take 2 deep Stainless Steel bowls and clip them or fasten them together with clamps, voila you have an oven!! Or 2 S-S rectangular steam table trays, or... God Bless us all
wow i never herd of VASELIN to start fire ? i learned another thing what is the little flags for around the tree Its 4 in the morning .. cant sleep what to do????? watching your videos thanks sooo much
I built a rustic rocket stove by my back door last winter with a stash of wood. Didn't have to use it...but sure could have. Thank you for the refresher course. Do cinder blocks explode when hot?
You are welcome. I can't imagine they would explode unless they were wet and holding water that would then produce steam that could expand. Just my thoughts.
Regarding the cinderblock rocket stove and the 1 inch drop- Just before you asked Jim to look into the combustion chamber, there was a shot that showed the whole thing. I noticed that the second layer (which normally for those who can bend or squat better would be the first layer) that one cinderblock was on its side. Could that be the reason for the 1 inch drop? Because usually they’re a set size. I am not nearly as efficient as you are but I spend a lot of time looking at stuff, lol. I have seen a rocket stove done with a piece of concrete pipe in the shape of a T placed on its side. I think it was probably a sewer pipe, the diameter looked to be about 6 inches. They placed rocks to fill up that bottom part of the T. Then they placed another short section of pipe that had a flange on it (which is why I think it was a sewer pipe) on top to create a long combustion chamber - this was optional. If I can ever find it again I will add it to this comment. Of course it’s far more likely that you’ll have a couple of cinderblocks sitting around but it didn’t require very much in the way of construction.
With cooking on any wood fire, you will have smoke and suit on the bottom. If you put soap on the bottom. I prefer bar soap, Any will work, like ivory or whatever. Any that have a smell. Will smell for a bit . Liquid soap, like dawn , will be a bit sticky. Either one, will allow much easier clean up !

@TN Bushcrafter Thank you for your commentary here. LOVE this channel!!
God Bless us all
The breakfast looks wonderful.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us.
You are welcome.
Great idea for a family adventure in the backyard.😊😀🙂😄☺
@@heidefries1825 Good information! Thank you.
Finely, after 40 years of adulthood, I see that someone else makes scrambled eggs wrong. I have ALWAYS made them this way.
LOL! As they say, misery loves company! And anyway, how can anyone possible make scrambled eggs wrong when in the end they are scrambled ? Thanks for making me laugh!
My mom always made them that way too!
I've discovered your channel last week and been watching all your videos. I love to can and made your chili canning recipe, next I will be canning beef stroganoff. Thank you so much
Sounds great! We are so happy to have you along on our adventures!
Same here, recovering from back surgery and binge watching this channel.
@@joeyhardin1288 How is your recovery going? I've had back surgery too - oooh-wee! 😖 I hope you have someone to help you and that you're healing very quickly.
@@lisakukla459 Thank you! XLIF on Oct6. Was not too bad until the incision started to heal and the tingling started in my leg, that is driving me crazy. Driven 3 times and once was to Lexington, KY to the surgeon. The back is really sore. But all is good. My wife is here but I do everything on my own. Thank you for caring.
What is the name of this model of stove?
You could use fire brick, i believe its called this. they have a funnel shape to them they are used in the chimney of a fire place, that would make a Rocket stove and a baking chamber just thought that would work but i'm not a builder either.
Is this the appliance you mean? Electric?
Thank you for sharing.
Thankyou so much for sharing all about how to prepare food and put it up. You have given me confidence to try some new things. I wish I had known this years ago.
You are so welcome!
Excellent Excellent and Excellent!! Thank you.
Great information, thank you for sharing!
TY for this great demonstration using your rocket stove. You are a great teacher. I especially liked the demo of making your own stove. The eggs looked great. Would you make a video making the French breakfast puffs and cremefr ?
I am thinking about that. Thanks.
Oh yes! P?ease do!
I look forward to the next video on baking on the rocket stove. Thank you
Miss Pam, would you make a video or add it to the beginning or end of another video: cremè fresh????? I love the idea of a Rocket Stove!!! And now I have the knowledge how to create one myself!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
You are welcome. I plan to demo creme fraiche next week in our video.
I just love every video you guys make . You’re so intelligent, science based and informed I feel I can trust you . You are one beautiful badass mama! You remind me of my grandmother and her sisters - they all were gorgeous , smart and knew how to do things . I miss them all so much . So glad I found your channel and am learning from the best
Wow, thank you! We are glad you found us as well.
I just saw a man use a rocket stove using denatured alcohol in a can with cotton balls, INSIDE of his home. I thought of you and wanted to get your opinion on the safety of that? I trust your advice. Thanks so much for all you and Jim do to help others be prepared for what's in store. Vickie
That frightens me. What about the ventilation? That stuff is incredibly dangerous and unfit for consumption. Jim
Thanks so much for your response. I won't be trying that.
You two are amazing. I love your videos...Do you think it would be ok to use charcoal on the rocket stove?
Very informative.
Thanks for the info!
Me too.... with the arm in the clothes wringer!! Lol 😁
However, the we're delicious in a pinch 😋
an oldie but a goodie
great video & information, fun to see you doing the construction.. we also have an ecozoom versa from Amazon.. and a couple home made .. my husband got excited about them a few years ago & has put together a couple, from used cans of different sizes.. but none from concrete blocks & oh my gravy, he saves every little branch & twig from fallen limbs from the Fir & Cedar trees around our property, which is a lot here in the PNW.. he even saves the cones that fall after they dry, I think we have 3- 30 gallon trash cans full of cones.. and a couple of twigs.. I'm afraid to actually count, lol, he stores them between the garage & fence so out of sight.. & to this day we havent cooked a thing on any of them.. lol, I showed him your video & he said ALRIGHT!!!! lol... thank you! Blessings!
That made me laugh! I can just picture it. Thanks for watching and sharing with your husband.
You can use the pot grate from a gas cook stove then set your cooking pot on top of that.
YOU ~ ROCK ! !
Thank you for the information. Jim
On another yt video a guy was making a cinder block stove like this...he used a metal hammer and chipped away starting from one edge of the cinder block end until he removed the whole end of the block. You're trying to do it all in one, massive stroke!
Ha! You make eggs like I do! I always enjoy watching your video. 😃
Great video❤
Thank you for the demo.
Would love to see a tutorial on making creme fraiche and on what's involved in raising chickens.
Great job
You are simply amazing. I love your show. Have you found a camp oven that works well with this stove? If so, which one? Thank you.
@Jan Sytsma Hey Jan, you can take 2 deep Stainless Steel bowls and clip them or fasten them together with clamps, voila you have an oven!! Or 2 S-S rectangular steam table trays, or...
God Bless us all
I made my own from steel for myself and my kids. If you want to see how it works, I can send you some photos and videos.
You are fortunate to have that skill!
wow i never herd of VASELIN to start fire ? i learned another thing what is the little flags for around the tree Its 4 in the morning .. cant sleep what to do????? watching your videos thanks sooo much
$3 masonry blade at Lowe's fits any saw.
Don't cinder blocks explode if they're wet (being outside) then heated up?
Everything cooked outside tastes better!
Pam, did you test in any way how many times the cinder blocks will last before they crack or have any signs of weakness/breaking?
I heard on a couple other channels they can explode & fire bricks are safer.
What a cool video, thank u very much. U explained it very well.
Sherry: Glad it was helpful! Jim
Of course it’s far more likely that you’ll have a couple of cinderblocks sitting around but it didn’t require very much in the way of construction.
tyvm looking forward to more rocket stove info/expriments
Me too! Thanks for watching! We will see where this takes us.
With cooking on any wood fire, you will have smoke and suit on the bottom.
If you put soap on the bottom. I prefer bar soap,
Any will work, like ivory or whatever. Any that have a smell. Will smell for a bit .
Liquid soap, like dawn , will be a bit sticky.
Either one, will allow much easier clean up !
I think I need a rocket stove!!!! Brilliant!!!!
they are very useful, for sure!
Thank you for sharing it looks delicious! What kind of skillet are you using?
I believe I show it in the video. It is a cast iron pot with a lid that doubles as a frying pan.
I thought I was the only one who who did scrambled eggs that way. I thought I was an inventor 😂!
LOL!
