  • Join us for this special one-on-one conversation between two of the most notable figures in modern occult painting, art and writing, Chet Zar and Mitch Horowitz, illustrated by images from Chet’s acclaimed career and discussing art and spirituality, philosophy, the supernatural and much more!
Chet Zar is an American artist, originally from San Pedro, California. He is known for his dark visual art, make-up effects, and digital animation. Zar’s interest in the “darker” aspects of art began as a young child and he spent his entire childhood sculpting, drawing and watching horror films, which eventually led to a successful career as a makeup effects artist. After over 20 years of working as a creature designer, sculptor and painter in the film industry (on films such as the first two HELLBOY films, DARKMAN, HOCUS POCUS, FANTASTIC FOUR and the critically acclaimed music videos for the art metal band Tool), Zar decided to leave the business to pursue a career as a fine artist by creating original works as an oil painter and sculptor. In 2015, director Mike Correll created a feature length documentary about his life and career called CHET ZAR- I LIKE TO PAINT MONSTERS.
Zar is also the founder of the Dark Art Society and host of a long running podcast (The Dark Art Society Podcast) that focuses on interviewing other dark (and non-dark) artists and speaking about related subjects such as spirituality and the supernatural. He has curated multiple group shows and continues to be a master in contemporary art and the growing movement of dark art around the world.

Mitch is a writer-in-residence at the New York Public Library and the PEN Award-winning author of books including Occult America, The Miracle Club, Uncertain Places, Daydream Believer, and the newly publishing Modern Occultism. His books are translated into French, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. His work is censored in China. www.mitchhorowitz.com/
