David, get well soon. That was a nice ride through a beautiful French village accompanied by wonderful music. As for your question about getting an abscess you have meanwhile received a lot of comments and recommendations so I will not add more to it. I have been cycling a lot and never had any probems, nor have I heard of anyone in my group. However, apparently we are all different and some people seem to attract negative effects of what they do. Having said that I find it hard to believe that one gets an abscess unless he does excessive cycling, horse riding or even sitting. To be sure you might consider to consult a bike fitting expert and just apply some common sense to what you are doing. In the end, the sense of life is enjoying it. Keep on cycling and showing us more Brompton content from France!

David, I also have an abscess on my coccyx (I believe it's called pilonidal cyst) that I still haven't checked out with my doctor. I've been delaying getting this checked out because I need to be able to sit down for work, but I have to take care of it eventually. If we think about it, it makes sense: that whole area is under pressure while we cycle, even if we use ergonomic saddles and whatnot. Thousands of soldiers got them at the WWII due to the amount of hours they spent sitting, so much so that they called it "Jeep bottom". At the end of the day, I think some people get it and some don't.

    Hi David,
Getting an abscess is not terribly uncommon.
Among ocean sailors it’s known as “Spotty bottom”.
Normally they tend to disappear all by themselves after some time of rest.
The use of cycling bibs or cycling shorts with padding and some chammy cream can also help you out.
Most important is your saddle contact.
Your “sitbones” should be the only contact points as to relieve pressure from all soft tissue, which can cause discomfort.
There are loads of youtube clips on the subject.
It works, I’ve ridden 300 km races on my road bike without any discomfort although I’ve had some issues with abscesses on occasions.
Happy to see you on the bike again.
Keep up the good work 👍🏻😎
    Peter

Your personality, commentry and photography are spot on! Keep up with your content! Really looking forward to your next video. It would be nice if you could give us all a little bit of a back story behind how you ended up in France and why you decided to buy a Brompton . It seems slightly ironic to see you riding something so quinessentialy British through the cobbled streets of France. It would be a fare obsevation that some of your French neighbours seeing you riding your Brompton would consider you rather eccentric! (This is ment to be a compiment)

A very comfortable double-sprung saddle is the all-leather Brooks Flyer, which has a cut out section in the centre- top. Quite weighty item, but I fitted one to an Airnimal Joey folding bike for a pal to try (he has replacement knees, and limited mobility ... found the saddle added to the comfort of the rigid suspension bike, but still not enough to ride safely again). The leather is quite thick and stiff to begin with, as with all Brooks saddles. I think they also do an even more heavily sprung saddle. Not sure any of these will help, depends on what is causing the problem I guess. Another option is a Moulton, which I think are the ultimate in comfortable ride (adjustable front and rear suspension, and break down to between 2 and 5 sections for transport in sleeves ... not a folding bike as such, but really a great additional small wheeled bike with space frame, for longer rides. most dealers offer test rides as does the manufacturer in the UK (where they last for about half an hour plus a tour of the "old-fashioned" factory. Anyway, just some thoughts.

    Hello David,
Sorry to hear you've been on the sick list but great to see you are back out and about on the bike. There used to be a condition called "Stayer Disease" within the cycling world which relates to the problems you have had... Modern day cycling shorts do help and you can wear something over the top of them if you prefer. If you bath rather than shower another thing to do is add 1/2 capful of Dettol in the bath water which helps if you've had an chafing, don't worry there is no smell afterwards. Generally the more you ride the bike the more your undercarriage toughens up. See you next time.

There is reason that people who spend a lot of time on the bike wear lycra. I know we get a lot of abuse but I for one couldn't care less. We wear lycra with built in padding as it makes complete and utter sense for the bum. Investigate and do yourself a favour, there are shorts out there that will make your riding so much more pleasurable that WORK for the bum and balls and that region in general. When I ride even for a shopping run I wear lycra shorts, when I park to go shopping I slip on a light pair of shorts over the lycra so I don't cause anyone to faint or complain. While on the bike do you really care what people think, especially at your age?
