She is peerless in acting a song and her musicality is impeccable. And, with her dancing ability I don't think Broadway has ever seen such a triple threat.
Lot's of training! She went to the University of Michigan, which is one of the best schools for musical theater in the country, and she's so naturally talented to that the training only amplified how fantastic she is! I used to not be thrilled by her, but after really looking at her work other than one of two shows, she's so damn good.
Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus are among the greatest song writers of the 20th Century. They are up there with Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lennon and McCartney, Lerner and Lowe. Who would have predicted that when they took to the stage of The Eurovision Song Contest in 1974.
Sutton went to high school in Michigan and had one year at Carnegie Mellon. Older brother Hunter was the one who attended U of M's musical theater program.
her shoulders aren't doing the work, it's her ribs. and actually if done right the rib swing should be large because that means you are dropping the diaphragm to allow breath in. you would know if she was breathing unhealthy, the sound would be shallow and she wouldn't be able to make half the phrases because she would run out of air. her control is amazing, you can see the breath moving, which plays a huge role in emotional acting and singing.
I'm auditioning for Fiona in Shrek the Musical and I'm planning on singing this for my ballad. So glad I found a video of Sutton singing it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@luvHSM2 Yeah! I worked on a song with her this afternoon and I've been watching her teach for the last few days. She's one of the most down to Earth people you'll ever meet and she's friggin hilarious! I wish she was on faculty here @ BSU.
Wow. The song took on a whole new dimension with Sutton. She is heartbroken throughout. It’s not an easy song to sing but she made it work and made it poignant.
She's 34 now so she was about 28 when this was filmed. I agree she looks like she is 15 in this video. I think it's because it's a rehearsal and she is dressed in very casual clothes with no makeup or hair styling.
I thought the same thing about what she is wearing. It is a rehearsal for a CHESS concert. That's why she is in the street clothes, with the MIKE coming out her back pocket.
It's like she doesn't even have to TRY to hit those beautiful notes! How old is she? I can't tell. She looks so young until she opens her mouth and that tone pours out.
I think there was an American concert in September 2003. Then, there was another concert in London at the Royal Albert Hall in May/June 2008 with a few changes in cast.
@Akuchan7 haha.. im so sorry i was tryin to press the thumbs up button turns out i have picked the other one. but i agree with you. i really didn't expect that voice to come out of her young appearance.
Big sutton fan, the was wicked in TMM and cant wait to se what she adds to the fiona part in shrek. Someone elses story is my favorite chess song (along commie newspapers)
Ha ha, that's the best way to shut up talkers. Usually during rehearsals, I'll aim my entire performance right at them. Sutton really sounds great here.
And now it's 2014 and Sutton is giving what could be THE performance of her career so far in "Violet" and has been nominated again (is it 6 or 7 times now) for possibly her THIRD Tony. I guess,@ovitatric, she's just that much BETTER than elaine page, ruthie "Who ?", lea salonga, etc.,etc.
It was 15 years ago. I was at this rehearsal, it was just hours before the benefit that evening. It was insane that they were able to pull it together so quickly. Raul was literally trying not to fall off the stage during his rehearsal.
When was this video recorded, does anyone know? I'm wondering if this is the rehearsal for the other version of her singing this song on RUclips. She is a phenomenal vocalist.
i agree w/ peggers1980... give her some years more. not yet in the caliber of elite stars { elaine page, ruthie henshall, lea salonga, liz calloway, etc}.
I admittedly didn't know about Judy Kuhn, so I just listened to several of her versions of the same song, and I agree that she has a better voice from a technical viewpoint. But calling Sutton Foster a "Wannabe" is hardly fair, is it?. In my humble opinion, Sutton Foster sings with more emotions and character, but is still inferior to Helen Sjöholm, but all three are extremely talented singers, and it's a great pleasure to listen to different voices and interpretations of the same song.
Or maybe tear her apart. Yes, tear and tear are spelled the same. That said, Millenniumsteeler is out of his/her mind, to call Sutton Foster a wannabe. She and Judy Kuhn are very different indeed. I get so sick and tired of people making pointless comparisons that trash one person in favor of another. Childish.
Don't get me wrong, I love Sutton and her work, but this just seems to be sung to high... (as in the wrong octave) I don't know why, but it doesn't hit right with me... ^_^'
She is peerless in acting a song and her musicality is impeccable. And, with her dancing ability I don't think Broadway has ever seen such a triple threat.
Though a case can be made for Sutton right now, before she is done there will be no question: Greatest female Broadway performer of all time.
she makes it look so easy... this song is cake for her. What a legend.
I think this is one of the most beautiful performances I've seen from her!
I love her voice so much I could listen to her for hours on end. Love this song too!
Lot's of training! She went to the University of Michigan, which is one of the best schools for musical theater in the country, and she's so naturally talented to that the training only amplified how fantastic she is! I thought she went to Carnegie Mellon?
Sutton!!! That was sooo good!! Thanks for posting! :)

I'm singing this in a Broadway Revue, it's so beautiful! Sutton is so amazing!
Sutton went to high school in Michigan and had one year at Carnegie Mellon. Older brother Hunter was the one who attended U of M's musical theater program.
I've heard this song a hundred times but no where as good as this!
This must be the best I had heard so far. Both sweet and strong, very good!
She has the voice of a fairy tale Angel! Fantastic Job!
wow. thanks! She's coming to a school I applied to next month. I got an invitation to come see her. I'm so excited!
Sutton is way ahead of her league. Shes the best in broadway.
This is beautiful.

I'm auditioning for Fiona in Shrek the Musical and I'm planning on singing this for my ballad. So glad I found a video of Sutton singing it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My heartfelt good wishes!
how do all these people hate sutton i mean come on she is perfection in human form
@luvHSM2 Yeah! I worked on a song with her this afternoon and I've been watching her teach for the last few days. She's one of the most down to Earth people you'll ever meet and she's friggin hilarious! I wish she was on faculty here @ BSU.
Perhaps it might be more appropriate for Sutton Foster if this were changed to "Someone Else's Husband". ;-)
Wow. The song took on a whole new dimension with Sutton. She is heartbroken throughout. It’s not an easy song to sing but she made it work and made it poignant.
This video has 98,785 views, and 72,000 of them are me.
my friend met her, and she said she was really genuine and nice
How does she make her voice so strong and powerful???????!!!!!!!!!
and here i am thinking I am not that bad at singing... SHE ROCKS, seriously, I love her voice and interpretation.
4 Nominations
Angela Lansbury
Carol Channing
Sutton Foster
Mary Martin
Donna Murphy
Patti LuPone
I love this song and this my favourite version :)
I'm going to audition for this part too! I'm not as good as Sutton obv :p
x
sutton is normally just okay for me, but in this song, she shines perfectly. this is her in her element.
She's 34 now so she was about 28 when this was filmed. I agree she looks like she is 15 in this video. I think it's because it's a rehearsal and she is dressed in very casual clothes with no makeup or hair styling.
Actually, it's in the right key. Starts in G flat and changes to A flat at the end.
Here at 2024 ❤❤
they are definetly both amazing!!
i share your problem!!
@Akuchan7 I accidently deleted that. Didn't even know I could do that, lol.
Lea is a nine! Sutton is 9,7 bravo.. 👍Helen S is a 10❤️
Agree 100%. This interpretation gives me real Helen Sjöholm vibes.
I worship Sutton... I cain't decide if I like her version of this song or Kerry Ellis' better.
Oh, I have. I love Lea's too, but I just have a thing for Sutton Foster!
@jdstanning She's coming to my school tomorrow for two weeks. I can't believe I'm going to get to work with her!
Wow!
i'm pretty sure its a rehearsal
very interesting
What happened to the video of this where it was the actual performance?
I thought the same thing about what she is wearing. It is a rehearsal for a CHESS concert. That's why she is in the street clothes, with the MIKE coming out her back pocket.
It's like she doesn't even have to TRY to hit those beautiful notes! How old is she? I can't tell. She looks so young until she opens her mouth and that tone pours out.
Why is she always looking at the ceiling??
@EnchantedSilence So true!
Not 2008, it's 2003.
I think there was an American concert in September 2003. Then, there was another concert in London at the Royal Albert Hall in May/June 2008 with a few changes in cast.

I concur with the nasal comments. Her ability is fine; it’s her voice that bothers me.
Sutton recently turned 34.
Big sutton fan, the was wicked in TMM and cant wait to se what she adds to the fiona part in shrek. Someone elses story is my favorite chess song (along commie newspapers)

I wouldn't say one is better than the other, they are all just different
Sutton Foster is VERY overrated. Meh.
When was this? LIke 10 years ago? So, she was around her thirties......Damn, she looks like a 18 years old !! She just doesn't age at all !!! *_*
It was 15 years ago. I was at this rehearsal, it was just hours before the benefit that evening. It was insane that they were able to pull it together so quickly. Raul was literally trying not to fall off the stage during his rehearsal.

It was recorded the day of the concert. Sept 22, 2003. They only had the one day to rehearse in the theater.
this is a lot better then the live performance more emotion conviction and saddness wish she was more like this in live shows then rehearsals
This was in 2003... so she was late 20s.
@carolinesings1 good luck with that! And post a vid if possible hehehe...
Sutton is one of the best...
who cares how you breathe? she sounds amazing, that counts for much more than technique.
she's unbelievably fierce... even in pink pants...lmao
@paultoes IMO, I find Ellis voice irritating at various parts of the song
Fully agree! A bit "Las Vegas show".
How old is she?
Could have fooled me. She looks 24
wow, that's all I have to say.
omg omg!!!!! my name is Sutton James
ps... Check out Sutton Show
Chess
i like her voice more than kerry ellis'
that guy in the back was so annoying, IF SUTTON FOSTER SINGS, YOU JUST PAY ATTENTION!
so agree
Its the technical rehearsal - believe me... they only have a few hours to set up technicalities such a music stands/wiring/lights/sound blah blah...
hahahaha all the flagged comments below
i agree w/ peggers1980... give her some years more. not yet in the caliber of elite stars { elaine page, ruthie henshall, lea salonga, liz calloway, etc}.
I take that back. G flat to G major. Sorry. :(
She’s a very able singer, but her squeaky-brassy-nasal voice is so wrong for this role.
I prefer her without makeup; she looks younger and prettier. :-) Vocally, she definitely can sing, but she needs to learn NOT to be nasal and squeaky.
Sutton’s voice is just too nasal for this song. :-(
Her voice is too horribly squeaky for this role.
shes amazing but i heard she was mean in real life D:
I have only one comment: Judy Kuhn. Sutton Foster - eat your heart out.... you are just a wannabe....
nothing against your opinion but you might not wanna post anti-Sutton Foster comments on a video she's in her fans will tare you apart
I admittedly didn't know about Judy Kuhn, so I just listened to several of her versions of the same song, and I agree that she has a better voice from a technical viewpoint. Right you are. I wasn´t being fair.

I don't know why, but it doesn't hit right with me... ^_^'
Kerry Ellis is the better of the two because the singing isn't so mannered.
