Falconry: Hunting falcons off the fist

  • In this falconry video, I discuss the topic of hunting falcons directly off the fist. Often falcons are flown from a pitch, where the falcon circles high above the falconer, waiting for quarry to be flushed out. This video instead explores training large falcons to pursue prey, hunted in direct pursuit flights. The video discusses the history of this style of falconry, including Arabian hunting with Saker falcons pursuing bustards. The video also explores which large falcon species do well with it, as well as a hybrid style of hunting from the fist that specifically favors lanner falcons and lanner falcon hybrids.

    Been waiting for this one! Large falcons working with sighthounds is what got me into falconry. The dogs like my two Salukis are as stunning to watch as the falcons.
    I would definitely enjoy another video on this topic

    For those of us who don’t have the open acreage for “waiting on”, “off the fist” is our alternative, so please make more videos of this style of falconry. Saker and Aplomado videos would also be appreciated. Great job Ben.

    Hi Ben! Thank you very much for another great video.
    I would absolutely like another video on this, please. I agree with you about how, waiting on is the greatest thing that a falcon can do, but I would like to try direct flight with a Barbary or a peregrine. Your experience would help me a lot to start on the right path.

    What you think about the Ed Pitcher “technique“ (book “Flying of falcons”) starting with a “off the fist out of the hood” style for obtaining a very high pitch falcons. Many thanks (from Italy)

      I have trained male peregrine to hunt of the fist, and then to hunt from waiting on in less than one month. The end result is the peregrine that can hunt from the fist, and from waiting on in the same day, multiple times a day.
      Few times I had him flying from waiting on, and if the prey managed to slip and go for the cover and hide, I would just pick the falcon from the ground, and start searching for the hidden prey "goshawk style". When the prey is flushed again, the peregrine would go after it the same as goshawk would, with an advantage of having higher top speed in level flight and much bigger stamina. The obvious advantage goshawk has is initial acceleration in the first few seconds, but if you have an open ground, my bet is always on the peregrine!
      The reason I have started to train the peregrine that way is the fact that in nature peregrines learn to hunt that way gradually, and they don't always use the stoop, on the contrary many subspecies don't use the stoop as the main hunting technique.

    I would like a follow up video as well. Also, if you could give a quick word about hunting off the shoulder. Is it just Hollywood hype or is it a real technique? I can't seem to find info on it whatsoever other than portrait shots at events. To my untrained eye it appears it might be useful to have both hands free when hunting.

    I fly a 1400g gyr off the fist on AZ jacks, rabbits, and pheasants. It’s challenging to teach, but with a lure machine its not too bad.

    • @Semendrija123
      @Semendrija123 Год назад

      Interesting, Arctic hare is natural prey species of the Gyrfalcon so I thought that it would be rather easy to teach a Gyr to hunt of the fist?
      I have a male peregrine with whom I hunt of the fist, and from waiting on, and one day he missed a pigeon from the stoop and landed on the field after futile chase. I decided to pick him up and to flush some quail or a pheasant on the foot while going back to the car with him on the fist waiting for something to pop up like a goshawk, and to my surprise I have flushed the big hare, and in a blink of an eye the small male peregrine was on it. In a fear I have pulled the lure to call him back, and luckily he decided that the lure is much easier to fight than a hare.
      But what is interesting, he never saw the hare before, and I have never pull him a hare lure. If I did, I have no doubt that he would try to hold on to the hare. The process of him catching the hare was rater easy, but holding it would be challenging to say the least 😆
      Having that experience with the male peregrine, I had no doubt that teaching a Gyr to go after the hare would be peace of cake.
