It does not touch me, not a whit,
If I live in Ukraine or no,
If men recall me, or forget,
Lost as I am, in foreign snow,-
Touches me not the slightest whit.
Captive, to manhood I have grown
In strangers’ homes, and by my own
Unmourned, a weeping captive still,
I’ll die; all that is mine, I will
Bear off, let not a trace remain
In our own glorious Ukraine,
Our own land - yet a stranger’s rather.
And speaking with his son, no father
Will recall, nor bid him: Pray,
Pray, son! Of old, for our Ukraine,
They tortured all his life away.
It does not touch me, not a whit,
Whether that son will pray, or no...
But it does touch me deep if knaves,
Evil rogues lull our Ukraine
Asleep, and only in the flames
Let her, all plundered, wake again...
That touches me with deepest pain.

I love the perspective of learning Ukrainian through poetry. My grandmother speaks it fluently, since her parents were Ukrainians. This poem is far more beautiful than I would have expected, and I felt deeply connected. Cheers from Brazil

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I fell in love with Shevchenko's poetry and humaneness many years ago. It's great to have help like this to learn the poetry in the original Ukrainian. I would love to see other works of Shevchenko explained like this on your channel. Could you also do a basic lesson on the phonetics of Ukrainian, especially on the sounds not found in English? How to pronounce them properly, which muscles to use, diagrams of mouth and tongue positions, phonetic descriptions of the sounds, etc.? Use of IPA symbols will help if there are exceptions to how words are written vs how they are pronounced. I would really like to be able to read all of Shevchenko in the original eventually. Love from Taiwan.

This poem is so actual.... when you here the last lines: " But it does touch me deep if knaves,
Evil rogues lull our Ukraine
Asleep, and only in the flames
Let her, all plundered, wake again..." This so much reminds me on our present war situation. Seems like Taras was a prophet in this case.
He was a prophet in so many cases, it's scary. That is why we love and respect him so much

I'm not learning Ukrainian(at least not anymore) but I accidentally stumbled upon this and loved your breakdown of the poem. I'm an Indian and I've studied in Ukraine for 4 years(Кривий Ріг) and to this day I still consider Ukraine my second home. I haven't watched any of your other videos but I also loved his poem «Заповіт»
