Yuan Zai turns 7 at exclusive birthday party

Giant panda Yuan Zai will soon be sharing the limelight with her new little sister, who came into the world last week. But Monday was all about Yuan Zai, as she turned seven years old at an exclusive birthday party. Taipei Zoo invited 100 people to watch the new big sister help herself to two colorful birthday cakes. The event was livestreamed so that fans across Taiwan could help her celebrate.
The birthday girl slowly makes her way out into the enclosure. To mark her seventh birthday, Taipei Zoo prepared not one but two birthday cakes for her to have her pick.
As if to beat the heat, she reaches for the shaved-ice cake. But tragedy strikes just as she digs in.
Her fans gasp when her cake crashes down, although that quickly gives way to laughter. Zookeepers decorated the cakes with “stinky tofu,” “sausage with sticky rice,” and a giant bubble-tea cake. It was all made with ingredients like carrot, steamed corn bread, sugarcane, and her favorite fruit.

Every year, whether it’s the birthday of Tuan Tuan, Yuan Yuan, or Yuan Zai, we brainstorm some ingenious cake ideas. It’s possible that promoting Taiwanese values and Taiwan’s most famous snacks are things that our colleagues inadvertently think about.
The panda house was closed for the day on July 6, but Taipei Zoo let in 100 people to help Yuan Zai celebrate her birthday. Many had been to her birthday parties before and are her most loyal fans. One brought a handmade card.
