I think he is still a young bird and he is learning how to drum a tree. So cute. Welcome to my garden I have some birds too
Beautiful bird
It’s hilarious the way they drum like that lol
At this very moment I have one drumming alternately between the metal roof of my neighbours shed and the downspout on the corner of my house... which is about 4 feet from my head!!
definitely just heard this outside my window lol
Mourning dove in background.
That was actually my son playing in the background making dove noises (you can hear him more clearly at the end)
A couple days ago me and someone heard some tapping and I was like. "Who the hell would be tapping out in the backyard?" The other person went to check. He said he saw a bird or so but did not think it was a woodpecker as he thought he woodpecker already flew off. Today we saw this Woodpecker though slightly bigger and older I think and I was like "That is a Downy" since it was small and not one of the bigger woodpeckers. They noted that the woodpecker looked cute. It tapped on 2 wood posts on the porch but it soon went to the tree and then flew away. I could tell it was male since he had the red on his head. If I remember only males have that and females don't.
Hairy woodpeckers are nearly identical but larger than the downy. I usually look at their beak. The downys beak is about half its head size while the hairys is longer than its head. I love birds!
