Have only recently discovered this wonderful lady. It defies logic and reason that she is not held in the highest possible regard. She deserves being brought to a much wider audience she once held and deserves again. Are you all with me? Thumbs up if yes...
I search up “woman jazz pianist” and this came up. Such luck to hear magnificent and fiery talent from an amazing woman. So happy I got to hear music from the great Hazel Scott.
I searched "feminine jazz piano" just looking to see if jazz is performed and improvised differently between genders ^^' not to say one is worse but just to compare and contrast. This is a pleasant surprise!
Hazel Scott was truly one of the greatest pianist of her type. So many of the people of this generation don't know of her. Not only was she talented, but so very beautiful. She was also married to Congressman Adam Clayton Powell.
Hazel Scott was from the beautiful island of Trinidad and Tobago.🇹🇹 My grandparents and parents knew of her because we're "Trinis." She was talented indeed. Everyone here knew about her. Her family gave piano lessons here as well.
Good day Steve, unfortunately, she was decimated by House Un-American Activities Committee in the late 1940's, and her career never recovered. A contemporary of Billie Holliday
Don't feel bad, I have (ever since I was a young boy) had a crush on Gene Tierney. When I heard about what a tragic life she had, I wanted to do nothing but put my arms around her to make all her suffering go away.
I can't get over how good she is. I discovered her from the Memory Palace episode "Promise," which is worth listening if anyone wants to hear about her life. It's crazy to me that she played with Mingus and Roach but I'd never heard of her. The spontaneous jazz interpretations of classical pieces she does (like the USO vid where she plays Lizst) is so mind-blowing. My jaw dropped, but how many people these days can even appreciate this type of music? Glad to see I'm not the only one flipping out for Hazel!
Wow, she was incredible on the piano. It was effortless for her to make those runs and progressions. I'm beyond impressed and have never heard of her before now. What a marveous talent she had........
This woman can do classical, jazz, pop, ragtime and who knows what else. Mingus on bass? Wow! I'm a jazz novice, so you jazz people can 'dunn' me for just discovering Hazel!
My mom took us to see her around age 14. She was a contemporary of Lena Horne, both beautiful and talented. It was the era of swing and greats as Billy Eckstein, Dizzy, Count,..... classic!
OMG! Where have I been all my life? Never heard of her. Her technique is impeccable, yet plays with heart as her fingers fly across the keyboard at MACH 1!
Hazel Scott was a champion for civil and women’s rights. Born in Trinidad in 1920, she moved with her family to the United States in 1924, where she played her first professional recital at age 5 and was accepted as a private student to study piano at The Juilliard School, a private performing arts conservatory in New York City, at age 8. By the time she was thirteen, she was being booked for performances as “Little Miss Hazel Scott-Child Wonder Pianist,” and soon afterward became an accomplished singer as well. In 1938, she was cast in her first Broadway musical-Sing Out the News. Shortly afterward, she recorded her first solo album-Swinging the Classics: Piano Solos in Swing Style with Drums-and appeared in her first film, Something to Shout About. As her musical and film career grew, she made headlines by standing up for the rights of women and African Americans, and she refused to play for segregated audiences. When Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., led the March on Washington in August, 1963, Hazel led a march in Paris, where she was living, in front of the American Embassy. She learned about the Bahá’í Faith from Dizzy Gillespie and became a Bahá’í on December 1, 1968. She passed away in 1981.
This is a clip of Hazel Scott doing 'Taking a Chance on Love' from a 1943 movie, "I Dood It," starring Red Skelton and Elenor Powel. Lena Horne also appeared with a back up singing cast, peforming Jerico.
"Taking a Chance on Love" (Vernon Duke - John LaTouche) was from the 1940 musical CABIN IN THE SKY. The movie (and song) rights were bought by MGM, and and Hazel debuted this song a year before CABIN was made. Ms. Scott was truly one of America's cultural treasures.

Someday, I will find the sufficient and proper words to praise this WONDERFUL VERY TALENTED Lady from the past along with Fats Waller, Eubie Blake, Scott Joplin, Louis Armstrong and many, many others. WOW, I just heard of her today. This is true talent. May they all R.I.P.
The magic fingers of Hazel Scott on that piano.......she was in a few films in her day doing her special multiple styles and tempos from slow to jazz and everything in between. She was one of a kind, very talented!!
I heard about her on social media a while back for the first time and seen a snippet of this video, but ever since then I just loved to see her smile and watch her hands go to work! Makes my day every time. Me as a black woman pianist myself I hope to reach this kind of potential like she did, what looks like so effortlessly. edit: i forgot to say I was looking up black artist of her time like Shirley Scott, who I got mixed up with the lovely Hazel. Both beautiful pianists.
My first introduction to Hazel Scott was in the early hours today via radio and BBC World Service The Forum. An hour-long program, hosted by Rajan Datar. Scott's biographer, (and actor), Karen Chilton, was one of the fine guests, along with Loren Schoenberg, saxophonist, bandleader and Senior Scholar of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem; and playwright, lyricist and broadcaster Murray Horwitz. The title of the book is: Hazel Scott: The Pioneering Journey of a Jazz Pianist, from Café Society to Hollywood to HUAC. (HUAC was the House Un-American Activities Committee).
When i saw this woman for the first time ...i immediately fell deeply in love with her 🤣🤣🤣...mind you she passed on long time ago .. Im a pianist myself but boy o boy this woman had some talent ...
If I could go back in time, Miss Hazel Scott would be my woman, wife what ever. Not of my time, dead and gone, but I have been in love the first time I saw a video of her. Beautiful talented woman she was, way beyond her time.
From the MGM movie "I dood it" 1943. Her career was cut short by an appearance before the House Un-American Activities Committee, although she was never a communist or even close.
Wow. I feel like she's one of those people that will always be better than you, no matter how much you practice. Like she's got a natural aptitude for it as well as practices constantly. This is amazing.
Have only recently discovered this wonderful lady.

I search up “woman jazz pianist” and this came up. Such luck to hear magnificent and fiery talent from an amazing woman. So happy I got to hear music from the great Hazel Scott.
She is classically trained and can play classical music as well. You can hear classical bits in this recording.
I searched "feminine jazz piano" just looking to see if jazz is performed and improvised differently between genders ^^' not to say one is worse but just to compare and contrast. This is a pleasant surprise!

I'm 65 years old and I've never heard of her either. Somebody posted footage of her performing on facebook. I'm here because of her and facebook.
Hazel Scott was from the beautiful island of Trinidad and Tobago.🇹🇹 My grandparents and parents knew of her because we're "Trinis." She was talented indeed. Everyone here knew about her. Her family gave piano lessons here as well.
She was a musical genius but unfortunately not very well known these days
Good day Steve, unfortunately, she was decimated by House Un-American Activities Committee in the late 1940's, and her career never recovered. A contemporary of Billie Holliday
It’s sad.

She really, really is. You might enjoy the Memory Palace episode about her life: thememorypalace.us/2016/12/promise/
If I were a guy, I'd have a crush on her, too!
Don't feel bad, I have (ever since I was a young boy) had a crush on Gene Tierney. When I heard about what a tragic life she had, I wanted to do nothing but put my arms around her to make all her suffering go away.

And she had a wonderful voice, too!
Question? How could nine people do a thumbs down on this wonderful artist! What is wrong with you?
Maybe because she was a civil rights activist. There's a lot of racists about.
Wow. I had no idea Hazel Scott existed until the brilliant singer Rhiannon Giddens shared this video on Facebook. Thanks, Rhiannon.
I c seen dis so many times but I never get tired of it. She was mastermind on the piano.
Beautiful wonderful lady....awe inspiring and decades ahead of her time....bravo!!🌟🌟🌟

Hazel Scott was incredible, she would even put today's jazz pianists to shame!!! (no offense, this is just a manner of speaking)
She was great at the classics too.
H.S married Adam Clayton Powell jr. a different world back then, the 40's & 50's, great music that's forgotten. 😉
Wow. I feel like she's one of those people that will always be better than you, no matter how much you practice. Like she's got a natural aptitude for it as well as practices constantly. This is amazing.
Well, she's a child prodigy. So, I wouldn't expect nothing less than greatness.
@SaraNiemietz sent me. The last time I heard Hazel Scott, was, 19?? I'm not giving away my age, haha;;Beautiful☺
I wished the kinoscopes of her show on the DuMont network existed.
