Yeah, it would be really cool to see a more user friendly 'Low Waste' option. People can get very hung up on the technicalities of a challenge and trying to stay in certain parameters, but it would be cool to see just how much a difference is made by smaller changes

@@chabababa there isn’t a great deal on the market in lieu of fluoride. Hydroxyapatite toothpastes are becoming more commonplace but research is still being done on their efficacy and they’re very pricey in comparison to a 50p toothpaste with fluoride. As for it being essential - there are stacks and stacks of quality medical research out there on the role of fluoride in preventing tooth decay. I recommend using quality trusted websites to do research on like pubmed. As with anything the “risks” of a product lies within the dose - in the same way chocolate is toxic to dogs it is to humans - we just physically cannot consume the amount needed to cause us any harm. Similar with toothpastes and fluoride- you would have to intentionally consume vast amounts to cause yourself damage
hey taz, i hope you’re okay. i realised you haven’t posted in really long, i pray everything is going well in your life. you’re an amazing person; you never fail to bring a smile on my face :)
This was pretty good. Zero waste is actually more about reducing waste where you can and improving over time. Don't put so much pressure on yourself. It makes way more of a difference if you reduce waste consistently than if you do absolutely no waste for a week or month. It is really hard and not realistic to remove all waste for most people, but small actions over time really help, like getting the loose fruit and veg and bringing your own bags or containers or cup.
Food packaging that looks like paper or cartboard, 9/10 is plastic lined. The butter, the drink cartons (like your orange juice) simply because if it gets wet it gets destoyed. you can feel if it's paper or not. like the cookies,it's paper
A small suggestion about replacing things like the tripod is to either try to fix it/ get it fixed first (you’d be surprised how many RUclips tutorials I’ve followed to fix random household stuff myself but I’ve also found repair shops which are also small local businesses) or buying second hand. It’s not a perfect idea, just another way to look at it.
Hi Taz! Just wanted to leave some information on this video that is very important in the Low Waste movement. Plastic is not our enemy! Plastic is very harmful to the planet, that's is for sure, but if we account for the total carbon emissions, sometimes, cardboard has a higher footprint than plastic (if the plastic will be used several times). Another part of the low waste movement is being conscious about what we buy and most importantly using what we already have, YES even if it is plastic, as reusing is the best policy :) The less we buy what we don't need will eventually reduce production, both production and transportation are what increase the footprint of a specific product. For more information, I will suggest checking out: Gittemary, Shelbi, and Sustainably Vegan! Hope this helps everyone who is starting this amazing journey
Are you okay? You haven’t uploaded for a month, three months on your other channel and also since April on Instagram! I’m not stalking, just genuinely worried for you! I work in a zero waste store. we get new people coming in everyday being excited to refill their containers. the staff and the customers of zero waste shops are so welcoming and kind, and Its genuinely the best job I've ever had. it makes me happy to see someone as big as Taz visiting one, because I still think lots of people don't even know they're a thing. thank you Taz you are amazing 👍☺️
@@JT-dt9lp everything comes in either paper sacks which we then recycle. or some stuff does come in plastic packaging which we then send back to our suppliers and its turned into furniture
@@nat3007 yesssss they are. Even my manager thinks the same thing but sadly zero waste products are more expensive to produce. We do our best to try and keep things as cheap as possible. Hopefully one day the cost of zero waste products go down so it can be accessible for everyone.
I think preperation can help you a lot Taz. Especially with the ADHD. If the supermarket overwelms you, making a list can help. You only have to focus on grabbing what you need. Same could go for your toiletries a little bit of homework goes a long way
re: Tripod dilemma - trying to find things second hand is always a good idea! and if you can't manage to find what you're looking for, don't beat yourself up for having to buy something new
Hi Taz, Just to let you know that the orange juice is in something called a ‘Tetra Pak’ which isn’t completely cardboard, but can be recycled, no hate, just telling you ❤️😊 Also: Wild deodorant is amazing - I would highly recommend it - it’s a really great company. And in answer to the tripod question, the lowest waste and most eco friendly option would be to buy one second hand to reduce the emissions of a new one made of virgin materials, so maybe you could do that. 😊
Yep, "Cartons are a composite packaging material - in other words they are not made from paper alone but comprise of about 75% paper, 20% plastic (polyethylene) and 5% aluminium foil (for long-life products)."
Actually tetra paks are really hard to recycle, because separating the different materials is not that easy. So in a lot of areas they simple burn it as is. A bottle completely made of (recycled) plastic would be better.
I don’t know if I’ve dreamt this but I feel like I watched something on this morning with a lady saying even items like can’t actually be recycled and if any food comes into contact with the packaging then it’s tampered with even if it’s just placed in the same area. In my mums area all plastic and cardboard is put in the same bin which baffles me. I’m pretty sure most of the stuff we recycle end up in land fill because the government would rather take the cheaper option
Feels so weird having to play around finding recycle-able plastic. I’m from Sweden and here we’ve got recycle bins for “hard plastic” and “soft plastic”, so containers in one and wrappers/plastic bags in another. Same for paper and such.
Yes, I was horrified when I lived in England that so many things were deemed non-recyclable, things I had been recycling for years in Sweden. But we have to remember that recycling is the last option, the most important thing is to reduce the amount of waste we’re creating, whether it’s recyclable or not.
I know the content may not be as interesting and isn't the point of this challenge, but the most sustainable option is to use what you already have before buying new rather than just replacing everything with "zero waste" options.
I started to get intest in zero waste but here in asia you will find plastic shopper, straws , cups , containers , so going zero waste is like almost impossible for me . Btw red yellow looks REALLY GOOD ON YOU❤️ Love you Taz❣️
I remember watching you before you got big and I’m so proud of you I’ve always loved your videos and how much of an amazing person you are so keep up the good work girl
Urgh Taz 😭 this was painful to watch, and so frustrating to see how confused you were - good work for giving it a shot. It just shows how incredibly complex this topic is made to feel and it shouldn’t be that way ☹️ it doesn’t have to be that way! First of all the easiest way to be lower impact/more sustainable (whatever buzzword you want to use) is to USE WHAT YOU ALREADY OWN 😊 Going out and buying new ‘low impact things’ is simply a trick to get you to buy stuff, stuff that you might not like (toothpaste) and end up throwing away! You also really seemed to be obsessing about packaging but really you want to buy things with little or no packaging at all. Sadly packaging is still waste and even if it can be recycled it rarely is, (sad but true just google it) a lot of this recycled/recyclable mumbo jumbo is nothing more than green washing. Plastic can only be recycled a few times, paper or card that has plastic and or foil coating is rarely recycled (often food packaging). Glass and metal are the best options as they can be recycled infinitely! You are fortunate to live in London and have an abundance of physical shops where you can buy more planet friendly options, plus you can order a lot of this stuff online. I live in Vietnam but even here I can get deodorant and toothpaste that are not weird, cruelty free, vegan, work and come in metal tubes so are completely recyclable - metal is something that’s more likely to be recycled! (Still not enough) Fruit and veg you can get from a market (orange juice comes from oranges not cartons - then you can compost the peel or better still chop it up, mix it with rubbing alcohol solution, leave it to sit for a couple of weeks before diluting with distilled water - add to a spray bottle and voila surface cleaner that smells yum) and pretty much everything else you can get from a zero waste store. It doesn’t have to be expensive, you can make some of these things yourself - just search on Pinterest you’ll find loads of ideas. In answer to your tripod breaking - get it repaired or buy a used one on eBay/Facebook marketplace/similar. The salt - of course you can use it, it was already in your cupboard. The best way to lower your impact is to not buy things that you don’t need. Being lower waste isn’t about packaging and it isn’t about restriction it’s about thinking about the consequences of your actions. Just think of it like how you thrift and buy second hand clothes just on a bigger scale. Buy better, buy less and reuse as much as possible. If you buy something in a plastic container then what can you use the container for? Don’t let all this complicated nonsense confuse you, you’re already doing great!! ❤️
Actually glass bottles can only be (washed) used (say by milk companies) a certain number of times before they have to be melted down to make new ones. But yes once new bottles have been made the process can start again.
This has always been something I wanted to do and I’m so proud of you for taking the initiative and giving it a try no matter how difficult! This is so inspiring 💛
i really enjoy how real you are taz, you show us all the "parts" you go through, like if you fail or make mistakes or if something does or does not work out. I am just really grateful for your realness, if that makes sense
Hi Taz, Well done taking on such a huge challenge! I work in the sustainability sector so feel free to message me for advice if you're ever wondering about more zero-waste options
Yes Taz, please take up this great offer. I’d really love to see you learning and showing people what can be done. You don’t have to invent the wheel. There are people there before you who have worked a lot of this out. Big shout out to all the offers of help.
Hi Taz, I started using Wild deodorant at new year. I tested against my usual Dove deodorant and im so impressed with its performance. I stay much fresher even after working all day and going on a run. Plus I'm still on the first refill (in April) so they last a long time. Its also worth mentioning they are all natural ingredients whereas regular deodorant has lots of nasties.
Besides the challenge itself I found it very interesting to see what options exist in the UK. Shampoo bars for example are actually gaining in popularity in Germany and you can buy them almost everywhere for an affordable price. Also Lidl and Aldi, as well as other stores offer you re-usable nets for your vegetables and fruits instead of plastic or paper bags. Obviously even in Germany many brands pretty much only greenwash their products but I found it very interesting to see, what the it’s like in the Uk 🇬🇧
@@timtreefrog9646 What soap do you use? I tried this once with a soap from lush and my hair felt so awful I had to use shampoo right after .. Love foamie bars currently but I'm always open for new options!

Just to say, I noticed in the scene after you washed your hair with the lemon shampoo bar, your hair looked amazing. Also, you did really well with this challenge, in a world that doesn’t make it easy. No matter how many pledges are made by merchants to reduce waste, they fail to make it easy for the consumer whether it’s by the prices or the availability. Until they tackle that, people aren’t going to try very hard and it’s never going to have the desired effect. I think highlighting the struggle is a start, so well done to you.
Hey Taz! I respect your chalange and great that you showed how hard it actually is, but this is not zero waste. Just zero plastic. Cardboard is still waste. Not all cardboard is and can be recycled. For example glossy cardboard is almost never recycled.
My favourite quote for this kind of lifestyle is "we don't need a handful of people doing zero was perfectly, we need millions of people doing zero waste imperfectly". As much as we can try to be completely zero waste, it is absolutely impossible right now until bigger corporations and our leaders take this stuff more seriously. Even just doing some simple swaps and really just think if we actually need these things, the world will be a better place
Hey taz ! I really hope that your okay ? Its okay that you want to take a break for while maybe because of some issues but just let us know that you are healthy and working on your problems if you are having one . 19:05 thats why i have so much respect for those who live a low impact or zero waste lifestyle coz living the way they do takes off the convenience that comes with plastic packaging and it sometimes requires going out of their way to get certain products. and i am saying this from experience as well coz i attempted to do so too but its really hard but im proud to say there are some low impact alternatives i am able to adapt like reusable pads, menstrual cup and cotton rounds. i found taz's channel tbh from the first plastic free challenge she did before ^^
Hey Taz, to help with the meat issue. Cook it first before adding any veg at all. Fully cook it, and while it's cooking season it with salt, pepper, and a teaspoon of soy sauce. Then turn the heat down and add the veg and tomato sauce as well as the rest of the seasoning. You can do this for any recipe. I learned to cover up the taste of meat because when I was in nursing school I had to learn anatomy off of cadavers. Really puts you off the taste of meat. I would have become vegetarian but I have a condition that prevents absorption of plant based iron and supplements just aren't enough. Put me in a tight spot but I learned to cope. Also barbecue sauce, cook your meat in that and it also helps.
@@adeallapashtica9003 yeah that first few weeks of nursing school sucked cause the cafeteria did not season their meat well and I had to eat lunch right after Lab hours. Made me desperately wish I could be vegetarian. Gut damage sucks, I do limit my meat to just what I need now though. Which is pretty much just beef a few times a week. Pork and chicken are a no go for me.
@@adeallapashtica9003 it's not so bad. You get used to it. At the very least chinese and Mexican food has never been a problem because of all the seasoning. So I just base most of my recipes off of those. Oh and Thai and Vietnamese food. Basically any not-european cuisine with the exception of Japanese food. Because they flavor everything with fish sauce and I can't stand fish. 🙂
You did great as you are in the UK!! I just moved to UK recently coming from Germany and I was absolutely shocked with the amount of useless plastic packaging for everything in supermarkets!! Too hard to be low waste here unfortunately
Can you do a video based on how to keep calm with Uni , staying productive , taking mental breaks how to approach difficult situations , staying organised etc more day to day life like these as a young person honestly don’t know how to live 😅😅 shopping on budgets etc xx loving the vids
Make sure you find a hobby outside of studying that you can release your stress with. Staying organised probably a timetable on your phone but make sure to schedule breaks and food time. The budget student food was in the Greek shop when I went to uni so maybe check international food stores, too good to go can be good if you are quick and take packed lunch with you to uni if you are there all day.

I’d really love to see you do this again with some help from someone who has been focusing on a sustainable lifestyle in your local area. It would be great to see what can be achieved when you are not tying to learn it all in one go.
I’m pretty sure you can find bar soaps in cardboard boxes and even shampoo bars in cardboard boxes in regular supermarkets. There’s a Dove bar soap that I’ve heard people love, even for washing their face! (Don’t know if I’d be brave enough to try that though 😳) And Garnier recently came out with a shampoo bar in a cardboard box. Those brands might not be the best sustainable option (or ethical), but at least it’s something, right?
Bar soap is brilliant for your face, especially ones like Dove or baby soaps as they are balanced and very mild. All the soaps in plastic bottles and dispensers literally have the same base but with added ingredients to keep it liquid ... it's manufacturers that want our money that have made these acceptable and bar soap 'old fashioned'.
I came here to say this as well!! There are loads of soap bars in either a cardboard box or paper wrapper. They are much much better than any liquid soap.
@@sue15cat I wouldn’t use any soap on my face. It’s too alkaline and can disrupt the skin barrier which is slightly acidic. A cleanser that sits around a ph of 5-6 is the best as it’s the closest to the skin’s natural ph level.
Best way to start if u wanna do it for long term is first use up everything you have that's not zero waste! Find which ones u can recycle/ which ones u can reuse / or even donate
I highly recommend checking out Fairly Local Family. She does an amazing job of explaining zero waste and has some really good tips on how to go about it. She also discusses replacing items, such as your tripod, and how to go about it and why sometimes you have to break the zero waste rules for certain items. It is all about checks and balances. You do your absolute best in the areas that you can so that in the areas there are no zero waste options but you need that item it is at least balanced out.
Obviously everyone practices zero/low waste in their own ways but something I see zero/low waste people do is make a LOT of products they use. For example, instead of buying cookies and orange juice, an individual would buy the ingredients for the recipes and make them at home. I live in Canada and we have a store called Bulk Barn where you can buy ingredients and snacks and put them in bags/reusable containers (a bigger version of the zero waste store that Taz went to). I've seen people make their own cleaning products, hygeine products, etc with quite simple ingredients. Let's also remember that the challenge is restricting and difficult because the world is restricting and difficult. We have gotten so used to plastic that we're reliant on it. Options that are good for our planet are not easily accessible under late stage capitalism. This is a DEEP issue.
My city just opened a zero waste grocery store which is amazing! Hopefully, more cities can follow suit because I know the struggle of finding items with low to no waste.

I've been using the Wild deodorant for a few months now and what I can say of it is, while technically more expensive than regular deodorant, it lasted me way longer, both as far as usage (I bought it at the beginning of January and only used the refill this week) and scent (lasts more than the whole day. With regular deodorants I'd have to wash even two or three times a day and reapply sometimes, while this one lasts all day and, when I went camping, one swipe lasted until the next morning while still smelling very nice). So I can definitely recommend it! :D
Hey, for body wash you can use the Dove bar soap, I'm nearly sure they're eco-friendly, it comes in a small recyclable box with no plastic and they're normally fairly cheap (:
Honestly in a zero waste situation sometimes it works to go for sustainable routes like getting the tripod second hand so you arent buying it new but giving something else a new purpose.
Hi Taz, are you ok. why you not uploading any videos ? Hope everything should be fine, looks like you are not feeling like uploading again. Take your time, and take care of yourself.
Hi taz it would be nice if you could do a vegan week, as in London there would be more options. Also for a harder challenge you could go vegan on a budget
Hi Taz, just wanted to say it was amazing to see you do this video! I think one of the most important things we can do is be mindful of the purchases we make throughout our lifetime because whilst I think we should all bear in mind sustainability when we choose to buy something, we have to think of the price tag as well. For example, it was great to see you buy loose veg but also it was really great of you to explain the price tag surrounding the deodorant as, despite its sustainable nature, the price tag may not be for everyone at the current stage in life. I hope that not only you but us viewers can take away from this video that living a more sustainable life begins with being aware and mindful of your spending power, and, importantly, doing one step at a time :)

This is such a helpful comment! I agree completely even though I’m not Zero waste, I try very hard to reduce my carbon footprint as well.
We miss you our queen. Hope that you are doing well. We will wait for your comeback!

Same could go for your toiletries a little bit of homework goes a long way

re: Tripod dilemma - trying to find things second hand is always a good idea! and if you can't manage to find what you're looking for, don't beat yourself up for having to buy something new
Whatever hardship you're dealing with will come to an end. Tough times dont last forever, Tough people do. See you soon Inshaa Allah x
Hi Taz,
Just to let you know that the orange juice is in something called a ‘Tetra Pak’ which isn’t completely cardboard, but can be recycled, no hate, just telling you ❤️😊
Also: Wild deodorant is amazing - I would highly recommend it - it’s a really great company.
They used to not recycle tetrapacks in my area and it was super irritating because I drink almond milk out of those.
Actually tetra paks are really hard to recycle, because separating the different materials is not that easy. So in a lot of areas they simple burn it as is. A bottle completely made of (recycled) plastic would be better.
I love looking I'm my local no buy groups and Facebook second hand groups for items I need to replace, like the tripod. It's a learning curve.
Very excited you used my suggestion! Can’t wait to watch :)

Feels so weird having to play around finding recycle-able plastic.
I’m from Sweden and here we’ve got recycle bins for “hard plastic” and “soft plastic”, so containers in one and wrappers/plastic bags in another.
Same for paper and such.
We have some of those, but not many. There should be more made.
I was thinking this the whole video. It killed me
I started to get intest in zero waste but here in asia you will find plastic shopper, straws , cups , containers , so going zero waste is like almost impossible for me . Btw red yellow looks REALLY GOOD ON YOU❤️ Love you Taz❣️
That is so true. I live in Middle East and literally everything is wrapped in plastic. Impossible to find something that is recyclable or plastic free

(Still not enough)
Fruit and veg you can get from a market (orange juice comes from oranges not cartons - then you can compost the peel or better still chop it up, mix it with rubbing alcohol solution, leave it to sit for a couple of weeks before diluting with distilled water - add to a spray bottle and voila surface cleaner that smells yum) and pretty much everything else you can get from a zero waste store.
Great comment! Exactly what I was thinking about too
Actually glass bottles can only be (washed) used (say by milk companies) a certain number of times before they have to be melted down to make new ones. But yes once new bottles have been made the process can start again.
This has always been something I wanted to do and I’m so proud of you for taking the initiative and giving it a try no matter how difficult! This is so inspiring 💛

Hi Taz, I started using Wild deodorant at new year. I tested against my usual Dove deodorant and im so impressed with its performance. I stay much fresher even after working all day and going on a run. Plus I'm still on the first refill (in April) so they last a long time. Its also worth mentioning they are all natural ingredients whereas regular deodorant has lots of nasties.
dosesn't pretty much every "cardboard" juice packaging have plastic lining on the inside? it still goes in the yellow bin

"A for effort, hopefully" is merch I'd buy everything in. Great job Taz, love the video as always ❤️

Yum, dead people
@@adeallapashtica9003 yeah that first few weeks of nursing school sucked cause the cafeteria did not season their meat well and I had to eat lunch right after Lab hours. Made me desperately wish I could be vegetarian. Gut damage sucks, I do limit my meat to just what I need now though. Which is pretty much just beef a few times a week. Pork and chicken are a no go for me.
@@stormylou417 oh jeez, sounds horrid
@@adeallapashtica9003 it's not so bad. You get used to it. At the very least chinese and Mexican food has never been a problem because of all the seasoning. Taz, hope you're OK! We miss you ♥
TAZ!!! YOURE LITERALLY GLOWINGG, UGH ILYSMMMM💗💗
Hope you come back soon Taz, miss seeing your videos but you do you and come back when it's the best time for you! X
I feel like reusing plastic tubs is good! Atleast theyre not just being thrown away! You're recycling them by using them again!
Ur my fave comfort RUclipsr fr! And I learn new things when I watch u x

I hope you’re doing well 💜💜
