I preferred the shorter sideburns on Elvis, but as we all know Elvis wore or did what he wanted and was never afraid to be different. Only Elvis could rock those sideburns and looked cool no matter what. Just like the jumpsuits. I can’t imagine anyone else being able to wear those jumpsuits and look so cool and sexy in them.

Elvis came into my radar in the early seventies, so he already had the big pork chop sideburns. I was 9 years old when my dad called me into the living room to join him watching a TV program that was playing the theme from 2001 a space Odyssey. Which confuse me because my dad doesn't like outer space programs. But then the music changed to a boogie woogie beat, and out of the darkness came Elvis. Wearing the American eagle jumpsuit, tanned, hair in a perfect pompadour without the grease, and those big pork chop sideburns! He looked like a superhero! I said "Dad who is that"? 😮 (Remember I was 9 and had never seen Elvis in concert before) he said "that's a truck driver from Memphis named Elvis Presley"his way of saying you can be anything you want to be if you work hard for it! Elvis was the biggest star in the world at that point, and when I hit puberty I grew myself some pork chop sideburns, and didn't shave them off until I join the army😊 but from watching his career I didn't think Elvis's sideburns were really big until he made change of habit with Mary Tyler Moore..

In the 70's it was a fashion for most men to have big sideburns and long hair. It was all the rage. A development on from the styles from the late 60's, styles became 'big'. Big collars, wide bellbottom trousers, platform boots and thick framed glasses. A lot of garish colours and patterns beginning with music and fashion icons such as The Beatles, rock stars and Elvis was no exception. Look at at the Glam Rock stars of the UK, Alvin Stardust, Gary Glitter etc. I thought since it was very much the 'in' style Elvis just took it a step furthur. But it wasn't unusual. I saw it and experienced it myself. It was a nice time and a sense of freedom and 'belonging' too.

Spot on!...it definitely looks as if Elvis did this to make his face look slimmer after he had gained some weight . The effect from the front would have been of a more V shaped face as the sideburns partially obscured his fuller cheeks. Elvis had the most amazingly supernatural good looks and his industrial strength charisma carried him even when not looking his absolute best. Personally I think the Elvis of the 1969 press conference was the best ever look. Like your idea of commenting on various photos...so interesting.

    Hi 👋 there David
The first thing that I thought of ( before you said it) was to elongate the face , hence making his face a little longer, hence " thinner ".
We all know you wouldn't dis " OUR ELVIS OUT " so don't you worry about that David. Of course, there's always that one or two people that would complain.
If it wasn't to elongate the face, I honestly " don't have a clue ,as to why those sideburns were so long ".
We are talking about OUR ELVIS, so he just may have wanted to be different.
    ABSOLUTELY 💯 💯 💯 💯 💯 💯 💯 LOVE, AND ADORE " OUR ELVIS ".
HE WAS ,AND STILL IS " THE WHOLE DAMN PACKAGE ".

I read somewhere that Engelbert Humperdinck was the original for the larger sideburns, and Elvis copied him. I also read somewhere that Larry Geller came up with the sideburns shape when Elvis started wearing his hair longer in the back and sides in 1968, supposedly as an aesthetic thing to echo the profile shape of Elvis’ nose, and presumably to add visual balance to the longer hair. In my opinion, it worked. Try imagining Elvis with the longer hair and no sideburns. If these things are true, and I have no idea if they are true, then I suppose Larry Geller could have conceivably advised Elvis to have even larger sideburns as his hair length grew. I have seen the picture you are showing many times, and I think that’s about the longest I ever saw Elvis’ hair. I think the short bangs that Ginger left him with, I’m sure accidentally, are very noticeable in the funeral pictures from Denver, when Elvis was wearing a police uniform.

That reminds me of Elvis questioning his hairstyle in 69 and Priscilla saying, maybe he should do something like how Ricky Nelson had it! Elvis threw a fit! For some reason Elvis compared himself to Engelbert Humperdinck and Tom Jones in the early 70s? Elvis is way better than both of them Hugh was Greater! He should be comparing himself to Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin at that time!

Dave, you never have to explain that you are pro-Elvis. True Elvis fans recognize that while he was a musical god, he was also a human being with flaws. It does his memory no good to ignore his faults and bad decisions. Your honesty is appreciated.
Regarding the photo, I was going to agree that perhaps he was trying to hide his weight gain, but someone commented that these "mutton chops" were the style of the day so perhaps that is the real reason.
The photo is also interesting in that while it shows a fuller face, Elvis looks pretty healthy in this picture.

Cheesh just imagine all the toxic hair dye Elvis was exposed to regularly. Not only was his hair and sideburns dyed but also his eyelashes. A link between dark hair dye and brain tumors was discovered not long after Elvis passed away. My own grandmother, who used to have her hair dyed jet black, died of a brain tumor. Similarly, several years later so did the singer Sergio Franchi and the actor and game show host Bert Convy, both of whom I think dyed their hair black.

I never knew it to be that long. I think the theory of trying to define the jawline or frame the face in a way to detract from weight gain is a good one. I'm surprised Larry Gellar has never addressed the superchops (Yes, I just made that up). But the length down the back of his head is what's most surprising in this picture to me.

Never liked this look by men back then but Elvis took it to the limit. It didn’t last long for obvious reasons. He should have gone with a little facial hair like most men today. I am sure he must have experimented with a goatee like one of his bodyguards. But Elvis was Elvis and did things differently. Remember we are t Al king 70’s here one of the most outrageous decade for style in clothing and hair. Glad I was a young teenager then as this was the best decade in my lifetime.

I don't care for the bangs... but the sideburns, that was the style back in the day. I don't think it had anything to do with his weight.

Yes it could have been to make his face appear slimmer, but it was also the fashion then to have hair and sideburns like that, and I guess Elvis moved with the times 🤷‍♀ 😉

I think your guess as to why Elvis had his sideburns so long in 1976 is probably accurate!

He had that face lift in '76 and his eyes never looked the same after.

I think Elvis was very self conscious of his appearance, I think that as he gained more weight, those mutton chops and bangs were a way of hiding in broad daylight.

No not gaining weight Elvis had fluid's build up as you mention before from your other vedios Elvises thin around the arms and legs but his belly was full fluids not over weight Elvis ! And one of your post say at one time shows Elvis was worried showing his neck that's why he has high neck collar and low sideburns . Elvis always looks great

I forgot about the sideburns being that long! I like when his sideburns were noticeably shorter for a period in 1975 I think it was. His hair was a bit shorter too. I've studied him quite a bit. Lol.😂😂🤷‍♂️⚡🎸

@ElvisistheMan_ agreed, personally I don't love the mutton chops in 76, personally with the huge weight gain and drug use bloating his face, it made them look weird on him. However saying that, only Elvis could wear some mutton chops like that besides "Mungo Jerry"...lol

Hi David....to be honest I've never loved those long sideburns but I think it was just how they used them in the seventies. I've tried to google "seventies sideburnes" and I saw a lot of pics (John Lennon included) with those sideburns . Was Elvis adapting to that style or was he starting it for everybody? 🤔🤣 We know how many liked to copy him in his look....

ELVIS had a fair degree of vanity. And along with the rest of his excess, even his vanity became excessive
That’s just the way he was
    That’s not a criticism
    That’s just simple observation

It's definitely due to weight. The same way us women use contour and bronzer to add some dimension.

Elvis was a notorious over eater, especially at the end of his life. That’s not being mean that’s just calling it like it is. He had some health issues, but I believe it was mostly cost because of his extremely high pill intake.

I never cared for that hairstyle on him, he definitely should've kept it shorter and those sideburns definitely had to go. In that Hawaii show he definitely should've had his hair much tighter and higher, but i guess that the longer hair look was being associated with the music at the time, now Isnt it funny that so many long-haired band members from the 80's nearly all eventually cut their hair to just how Elvis wore his in the 50's?, pushed back high and tight. Me personally, I never bought into that raggedy ass long-haired look just because you liked or listened to a particular music. Too many people get all caught up in this whole "ya gotta look the part" thing, now considering i like nearly every form of music, I'd definitely have a confusing time getting dressed or getting a haircut if I ever adhered to that form of drone-ism. Unfortunately this is just the shallow nature of people and its all about appearances and your first impression of someone based on how they look, which in reality holds absolutely no weight whatsoever 😮

Elvis should have never did those movies and then went to the Army. Elvis should have just stayed in music. And took a early retirement in the early 1970's. January 8th Me and the King.
