Wow what a fantastic interview, and so many memories of a world class jockey and great horses. we had some right jockeys in those days, imagine if he was about today, he would probably win everything
I walked into a William Hill bookies sometime in the summer of 87, put 20 quid on Cauthen's mount, Perfect Timing in the first race. It romped home at 8/1. Cauthen was brilliant
Excellent interview, good questions. Amazing memory by Steve Cauthen, great to see him again on these shores. Also good to hear race reader Tony Cooke on Steve’s 1979 Guineas.
the youngsters watching this who do not remember this jockey and are in to horse racing i just want to say you lost out this is what a legend of the sport looks like to me the greatest mind of pace of any jockey i have ever seen and ever will thanks for coming over steve and the great memories your knowledge still and memory is remarkable
British racings golden era. Some truly magic moments. Things aren't the same now. There were some amazing partnerships, the best. Not sure we'll ever see a horse win the derby, from start to finish, again. He did it, twice! Phenomenal!
My all-time sporting hero, met Steve and Henry many times always fantastic times I spent with them either at Warren place or at the race courses . The bookies used to call me the Cecil/Cauthen bookie bashers. Best ever era of horse racing the 80s and Early 90s Got many books about Steve and Henry all signed by the legends themselves. Steve was indeed incredible and revolutionized UK horse racing before he arrived nobody rode with just the ball of their foot in the irons which gave him a low aerodynamic attack and of course he was simply superb riding from the front always got the fractions just right
still watching this video a few times one of the best ever as remember all these horses with henry as followed both of them religiously , not stalking but went to warren place a few times even in a private viewing
I knew only one horse had been second in all three legs of the triple crown, but Thought it was Sham (Behind Secretariat) and would have gone all or nothing on a quiz show ! So it was Alydar Im not sure how I didnt know as I was a Cauthen nut .. Then again I would only have been a small lad and who remembers the second apart from the owner .. Great stuff. I love these Rishi and Steve interviews. They're both so enthusiastic and respectful .. They clearly love the game and it shows in their hanging off every word their interviewees say Great viewing.. Great memories.. How nice of Steve to mention Robert Street who rode a few winners on second strings, but was more importantly a vital and indispensable cog in the Hills machine..
@@robertdelacy3434 I'm not to sure? Some say Eddery, from what I've seen and read there were plenty of good jockey around that time? I don't know what makes a jockey the best? Going by big race winners you would have to say Piggott but there's no it seems it was a vintage era for jockeys.
i was there at york 87 wet an understatement was good to firm in the morning heavy by end of the day never been so soaked in my life not being in a pool. reference point lost his shoe too in his race
I think I watched his first winner, Marquee Universal, at Salisbury. 9/4 favorite and rode them to sleep from the front. Not absolutely sure about the details but definitely saw it in a betting shop somewhere!
The only time I witnessed Steve Cauthen being outridden was by Lester Piggott in the 1984 St Leger , where his mount , Bayoun lost out to Piggott's Commanche Run .
just a great great rider....born to do it, a natural. Great seat...just looked great on a horse. You could serve drinks on his back.
My favourite flat jockey. Flat racing since he retired hasn't been the same for me.
