Hi Bruce! Free climbing means climbing up the rock using the natural features rather than using the "aid" of our safety equipment. I did use a rope and safety equipment on the Nose and in general when I go rock climbing because I don't want to get hurt or die in case I fall. When pushing the level of difficulty, we fall often! Thanks to our "safety equipment", I'm still here to talk about it! Cheers!
the changing corner pitch is what defines this route.. Did you prepare before hand? Did you top down to practice or how did you figure it out? The fact that you did the nose means your one of the best climbers in the world. You are amazing but i would like to know how you figured out changing corners.. or the roof for that matter. Such amazing climbing. You are a hero.
I have to credit Lynn Hill as being one of the greatest and most daring athletes to have ever existed. The physical and mental strength required to take on these challenges is amazing. She is truly an inspiration to all athletes.
I truly appreciate the difficulty of the Dawn Wall climb that just went up. But I've run into some folks online calling it the "greatest climb of in all rock climbing history." That may yet be proven out. But it's maddening to know that so few know about Lynn's visionary climb of The Nose. They don't know how hard it is, how it took years before another climber managed it. They don't know that Ms. Hill, with this climb, opened Yosemite climbers' eyes to what could be accomplished on El Cap.
NickFalacci From my understanding, it blew everyone's mind and made her a superstar, she was one of the only real professional rock climbers at that time along with a few others. But it made the sport progress almost overnight because she was the visionary that did something no one else thought was possible, then everyone else hoped on board and started trying to do the same once the barrier had been broken....the dean potters and the hans florine's for instance making speed and first ascents of super tough aid routes. I really don't think freeing the nose is/was undervalued or unappreciated bud
I climbed my first time in 1985 in the Gunks with a female guide named Rosie. She had me top roped on a 5.4 and I was struggling with it. Lynn came strolling by and stopped to talk with Rosie. She saw that someone had left a tricam in a crack near me. So she free climbed up to it, retrieved it, and downclimbed. When I lowered off Rosie introduced me. Lynn was very nice, very encouraging, and rather happy to find a free piece of pro. All I could think was damn what a badass!
@@LynnHillClimbing I can’t believe you replied! Yes - Rosie Andrews was my guide. That was a pivotal day in my life. I became obsessed with climbing and mountaineering and climbed all over North America during the next 10 or so years. had great adventures and met lots of amazing people along the way. It has been a long while since I last roped up, and I haven’t lived in the NYC area for years. But I wouldn’t trade those days for anything.
Hi, have you ever done rock climbing? I'm from Russia, I saw your comment under the video with Lynn Hill and your story inspired me once again, I'd really like to try rock climbing. As a child, I always thought it was not serious, but when I grew up, I realized that it is a real (and incredibly cool) sport that needs to be approached very thoroughly.
I have started climbing in 1998... You were the Goddes of rock climbing that time for us.. And you still are! Thanks for inspiring us @LynnHillClimbing !
I'm trying to remember how news of this ascent hit the climbing world. It was like a quiet bomb, if such a thing is possible. The future was revealed. That it was over a decade before the feat was repeated is shocking, and it's not like there were no attempts. 22 years out and only four people have done The Nose free, two of them women. There was a memorable ad on the back cover of one of the climbing mags, bought by Boreal, the maker of the shoes she used. There's little 5'3" Lynn casually dangling a pair of climbing shoes and wryly smiling at the camera and saying "It goes boys". It's a taunt, though not mean. I guess if your sexist it might have ticked you off. I thought it perfect. BTW: I'm a male climber who started before Lynn was born.
Some routes are easier if you are small, some are easier if you are large. Nobody makes a big deal about it. She was first on one of the all time plumbs. Fantastic. And no fluke to it she has advanced the maximum grade several times.
This. The climbing culture is getting wider and richer today, which is great. And I can't help but admire, be inspired by and become a great fan of you Lynn, because you have thrived while this culture was still quite narrow, unknown and mainly driven by masculine ego, you are a pillar of the modern version of this sport. I love watching you being right where you want to be; on the rock, climbing, surpassing not only yourself, but also every common limits.
For me (around 5.10a and so far away from Nose Level) this is so inspiring... wearing sunglasses on the Head while climbing great roof is... simply cool (i wrecked my favorite sunglasses on a little roof here in northern germany) great Music too thx for the Motivation
Hi Lynn, Met you at the last Facelift. Tried to Facebook friend you, but it was full. Would like to meet you again sometime. Thanks. Steve Thaw, Moraga, CA
Hi Lynn, you are a very courageous woman whom I enjoyed watching during the climb. I am happy that you are still here and well. Just be careful and aware of your limitations (even though your sport forces you to go beyond the possible)! May your smile stay with us for a long, long time! Greetings from Novalis.
I met Lynn at a speaking event in Seattle circa 1997 when she talked about this ground breaking ascent. I was a teenager at the time and she signed a poster! Last week, (almost 20 years later) I took my family to Yosemite to see El Cap for the first time (just from the ground). I think back about this single-day free climb and am still astonished beyond words. Still goes down as one of the most epic achievements in free climbing history. Thanks for posting.
I didn't know that I could be more blown away than by Alex Honnold. You just did that by watching what you are made of in this last climb here. This actually made me very emotional. Look forward to learning more about you. Awesome!~
Younger climbers today probably can't appreciate how much Lynn's FFA of the nose in 93 changed perceptions of people raised on I Love Lucy and Leave it to Beaver. The culture in climbing today clearly stands in large part on her shoulders.
Hi Lynn, You don't know me and wouldn't remember me. But back in the halcyon days of the late 70's me and my wife Linda crossed paths, or were sitting at a table, near you and John, in the Yucca Valley Taco Bell. This happened more than once, always late Sunday afternoons, we being on our way home from JT to San Diego. By that time I had chatted with John a few times in different places, and he probably recognized me, but he was cool about it. While you and I had eye contact a couple times, I was too shy to even say hi. So, after all these years - Hi!
Lynn Hill Great Climber Great Video Great Song - (Ben Harper - Fly One Time) Seems like a very nice person. Doesn't hurt she's a nice looking lady too.
Boreal Diabolo Naranja were my first pair of climbing shoes. PS. Not trying to be crude / rude Lynn ......but That's a good lookin lady climbing that wall.
Nice to be able to just watch her climb. Seeing her do the horizontal crack under the roof with no footholds, for example--sick! One of the best American athletes of all time.
I actually watched her climb supremecy crack in eldorado canyon. Pat ament was with her. Lazarus sticker in the back window of his car I believe it was a VW bug. somebody else Russ? I think his name was. they also did Kings X
Man, I don't know why Google sent me this way but i do know when i was climbing heaps, there was a poster of you on my wall as inspiration LOL! My kid just asked me "who is Lynne Hill?" Don't worry i explained, she was/is a super hero climber!
Tommy and Alex used direct aid (there's no such thing as "aid pulling"); while they climbed the same route (mostly) that Lynn did, these are essentially different climbs and really aren't comparable. Certainly both achievements are impressive.
Hey Lynn, I was climbing in the Valley Monday and Tuesday May 9 &10.This morning we were at El Cap Meadow gazing up at your route (the Nose)! From now on I will call it the Lynn Hill route!
I feel like the video tailed off there, i mean, you're ascent was phenomenal. Unbelievable. I aspire to have the strength, dedication, knowledge, patience and determination that you do. Amazing. thank you! I would love to ask you some questions, congrats!
In the book you say that small fingers were your secret weapon on The Great Roof. Probably true but there's a whole lot more to freeing the Nose, either in a day or at all. Dedication, persistence, skill, believing in self, and a whole lot more. Hats off to you Lynn!
@@LynnHillClimbing I'm sorry...laying in bed last night, I wondered about exactly that but forgot to research it and modify my comment. My apologies Ms. Hill.
Do you have to do the whole climb again if you fall or do you have some sort of "checkpoints" where you can restart from? If so, where are they and who said that's where they should be?
when i started bouldering 30 years ago…you Lynn were already a star.. i heard your podcast last week and it is so nice that you are still at the rocks somewhere out there.. good for you. stay safe and all the best for you. greetings from Cologne joh

sorry bolts are not included, that's called aid and and leaning on your gear
no shit fuckface
djvista38 free climbing means no upward assistance/aid. setting and using protection in the case of a fall doesn't mean that it's not free climbing.
I have to credit Lynn Hill as being one of the greatest and most daring athletes to have ever existed. The physical and mental strength required to take on these challenges is amazing. She is truly an inspiration to all athletes.
Here after the new Climbing Gold Episode, such an revolutionary of the sport

Lynn Hill is such a legend. If, in 1994, the world only knew that Tommy and Alex would climb The Nose in 1:58:07
That was not free climbing, more like aid pulling. Still a good athletic feat.

Even with today context this imagen are fucking epics!
3:00 those legs... thats a shape
She's an icon. What an inspiration for young women!
That Alex Honnold did the entire route solo continues to astound me.
