My oldest of 6 sons is 40 years old and he has Autism and ADHD.
When he was younger I began to recognize that he was having anxiety and depression so I would have him help me with untangling my yarn which helped to calm down his Anxiety Disorder. I taught him how to crochet the basic stitches. It wasn’t so much about what the project was as it was to keep a stitch count and use the texture of the yarn for sensory processing. These are his tools for creativity, keeping control of his disorder instead of the disorder controlling him.
Making washcloths and kitchen cloths became his “Yarn therapy” Crocheting has helped us both so much! ❤
And I love seeing him happy, feeling positive about himself! And learning life skills
    ❤❤

Mikey, it breaks my heart that you had to endure the worst of humanity when you were so young. I'm so grateful that you were strong enough to find a way to survive all of it and that now you're sharing your love of creating with this community you've created. You inspire me with your joy of living (and your courage!) Hugs from B.C.

In my work, I use crochet to help dementia residents in aged care to focus on something other than their situation and see the benefits every time they finish a project or get to start a new project, their smile is worth everything.
Thank you for sharing your story and highlighting the need for understanding of mental health issues.

The school system has a lot to answer for. When my sons were young, we lived in Scotland and they were both totally miserable their entire school years. Happiest day of my life was when the youngest left school. They are in their 40s now and if I had my time over, I'd home school. No question. I'm glad you managed to get through those years. ♥

Thank you for sharing and always posting such wonderful projects!! 1 had a 5 month old baby, and 9/11 happened. I was working in Soho. I will never forget the feeling of hopelessness but determined to make it home to my baby on Staten Island. Then later that month, having to return to work, I went to my crochet and knitting to stop the panic attacks in the subway or just commuting to work in Manhattan. It did save my life.

High school was difficult for the first 2 years. I went from a one room 1 thru 8th grades together, with only 2 in my class... to 125 classmates and changing room every period. I did not adjust well. Major anxiety anxiety! I had polio as a baby which left me with a lifelong disability. Yarn and primarily knitting have been my friends and support for over 60 years. During the isolation of covid, I knit and crocheted A LOT!!! Like you, it has been my go-to comfort and joy. I appreciate your video and being so vulnerable.

There was a saying my grandmother used to say...
The devil makes use of idle hands.
Never understood it till I was mid 40's, as kids were growing up and not needing me, mum passed away, and although I helped dad lots, I found myself very lonely, and my fibromyalgia and cfs got so much worse I wasn't able to get out, either walking ,seeing friends etc, and felt there was no place for me in the world. Then after spending 2 weeks in hospital learning to walk again, I took up crochet, and now make toys/blankets and clothes for family and friends and it's given me a purpose 🙂.
Thank you Mikey for all your videos, they are much appreciated 👏 💐

Mikey, I am so very happy that you are still here with us. I learned how to crochet from watching your videos. You showed how to do the different stitches. So I would practice doing a sc, a hdc, and a dc. This was back in the end of July of 2015. I sadly and unexpectedly lost my mom in February of 2014. She was only 60 years old. She could knit and crochet until the cows came home. She was very talented and creative. I decided that I wanted to learn because I wanted to have something that gave me a connection with my mom. So, I thank you for making the videos that I was able to watch and that allowed me to learn a craft that my mom once did, and now I am doing and love doing. Sending lots of love and hugs to you. ❤❤❤

Spending time with her in hospital while making it for her is now one of my fondest memories. (She has since sadly passed) She had dementia, so each time I showed her an update on her blanket she was so excited. So thank you for that moment from the bottom of my heart. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️ I'm sad and happy all at the same time. I'm so glad you chose life. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you choosing life. Your lessons changed my life. When I first ventured into crocheting it was so difficult because I'm left handed and back then, you seemed like the only youtuber showing how to videos for lefties. ❤

Oh Mike so sorry to hear you have suffered that way. I suffered panic attacks and depression and would curl up in bed not wanting to talk to anyone. I decided to do crochet to at least be productive. It has worked and I am hooked. I crochet lap blankets for camping. I am so pleased to see you are productive as well.

I have severe depression, severe anxiety and PTAD, and crochet has really helped me. My Nana taught me the basics when I was 10. I put it down for many years. After my diagnosis my first granddaughter was on the way and I decided to pick it back up and make her a blanket and that's when I found out just how much crochet calmed me. Now I work on something everyday to calm myself down.

I crochet for my mental health. It use to be a running joke for me. But I’m realizing it’s 100% true

Depression is difficult. I have crocheted 3 baby blankets in the last few months for granddaughters and great granddaughters who just had new babies. I don't get out much so my daughter brought them to each one. I have not received even a thank you from any. Crocheting, knitting and creating patterns and garments for myself has kept my hands and mind active for years. So maybe I will keep on going and find a way at Christmas to give to them to folks who need them.

I too would never want to go back to high school. College is where differences shine. I am so sorry you had so many suicidal thoughts. Back then there was not much to help. I remember being told "Try to not be so weird." I make pot holders. Not difficult but gives me joy.

When I can't find the motivation to do anything else, I find that crochet helps me move through the inertia. It is one of my many arts but this is the one that helps me find my way back from being stuck and depressed.

Sorry you had to go through what you went through it is tough. Thank heavens you found something that lifted you and made you want to carry on and look at you now. I love crochet I find is quietens my mind lets me focus and keeps my hands busy, I ache when life’s ups and downs mean I don’t have so much time with a hook in my hand, the yarn arts are oft not given the credit they deserve. All my love for you sharing your story.
