I was lucky to have just one video taped secret session in my archives. We didn't have the common place technology like the Marines do today. I treasure it like gold. Forever captures my memories of that time period. One day I will post it on you tube.
You have to do it when you feel it's right and if you don't I understand, but when you do, I will cherish that video too and it will probably make my heart grow twice the size.
It my sound odd and it may sound weird, but this video makes me feel so emotional. It was the summer of 1989 when I was at MCRD San Diego as a young 18 year old recruit. It moments like these, just like the video, that help mold me to the man I am today. Discipline, honor, pride, integrity, loyalty, and purpose in life. Sound cliche or corny but the Marine leadership and principles I continue to use today.
A moment from basic training that is ingrained in my mind is when another guidon bearer messed up a drill movement and his MTI told him that kind of negligence is why 9/11 happened
Even though it has been 30 years since3 I last saw the faces of my drill instructors (graduated San Diego, Plt. 2052 Sept. 1979), this still brings chills to me. Although, we never had to drill inside. I feel for the guide having to manuever the guidon in such close confines.
+jarhead2547 You're very lucky to have a digitial memory captured. Your SDI hooked you up. This was not available in my day although I do have on recording I have yet to post on you tube all these decades...I believe the statue of limitations is up by now....lol!
I graduated boot camp just this year February 26th 2021 platoon 1074 it’s really a weird perspective seeing how things used to be and how they are now different but similar
Trust me. They understand that the guidon is going to slip on that linoleum. Plus the SDI is going to work with the guide on his movements more than the J is. They won't really mess with the guide unless he really fucks the movement up.

Although I'm a Parris Island Marine the Drill Instructors at San Diego are Good to Go as well. Gotta Love our Senior Drill Instructors, Drill Instructors and Leadership Staff with the Various Companies and Battalions on the Depot because they put in a lot of working Training these soon to be Devil Dogs.

When civilians lol at this they see psycho men screaming at a bunch of impressionable young men but what they don't understand is by the end of training, each recruit would put his life in the line for his Drill Instructor in a heart beat. Very unique training philosophy in the USMC... No question it produces results, but it doesn't necessarily stand above all others in doing so. The Brit RM's produce an exceptional man for the battlefield & they approach things a bit differently... aggressive instruction & rigorous discipline yes, (but not hysteria) - coupled with extremely high expectations & a 'you will be culled from the flock if you cannot meet them' attitude. Not too many other famed units world-wide are as into 'breaking down the individual' to this degree... the Legion comes to mind, except it has reserved the right to inflict physical violence on recruits like the Corp would have done a decade or two ago. Still an extremely proud thing to have earned the title: United States Marine.
The extreme hysteria is to simulate the high stress level of a combat situation. Live fire contact is the most stressful and overwhelming situation you will ever expirence in your life, and even if you're in the marine corps with a non combat MOS every marine is a rifleman first and is trained as a combatant so to deprive them of this hysteria is doing them a dis justice by not simulating the stress of a combat situation
The yelling, screaming, and hysteria is there to train you to ignore it and to continue focusing on the mission. I can’t tell you how many times a loud noise has spooked people around me but someone didn’t affect me at all. That didn’t happen my chance.
Mini-grinding. Doing this for 4 hours in a day is a kind of mental exhaustion I can not describe. When I was in Delta Co, it sucked. When I was hurt and returned to training with Lima Co, it sucked harder.
What you don't see in this video is everytime someone fucks up, quarter deck. Someone doesn't react quick enough, quarter deck. You do it right, quarter deck. Lmao
My Drill Instructors made us count in our heads so the sounds and movements would be the same. I still remember drilling for hours to try and win the final competition.

the point of the screaming is to get you use to high intensity situations. They train your for the worse situation you could be in I.E firefight where you are surrounded, and its so loud you cant even hear your self think. They teach you to be able to be in this situation, and not freeze up.
To be fair, yelling at someone for not catching a ball, is a little different than yelling because your "move fasters" were slightly crooked.. One makes sense, the other requires patience and keeping your head cool while fixing the entire bay because of your 1 mistake, all while pushing..
Once I got used to it, I sort of enjoyed yelling back and forth with my DIs. I really had fun when 4 or 5 would all hound around me and start screaming at me.
