Gossip cause a lot problems. I’m glad God ❤us enough to let us know in the Bible . You can’t trust gossiper they betray confidence. Relationships can be destroyed. A lot of gossipers they want know ur business but don’t want you to know their business.
Go get the person that is being gossiped about and see if the slander can repeat in their presence. Witness both reactions? Stop conflict from the start.

I work in a grocery store where people gossip about others I stay away from them because the Bible tells me so
