Amazing talk! One of the more relevant Ted x talks recently and a must-watch. She definitely addressed the biggest concerns regarding the technology and made great points.
Wow! You are absolutely amazing. So glad to see that not only are there people trying to design a positive virtual world, but also there are fellow Torontonians doing the same! I actually have the opportunity to work with Occupied which was cool to hear you talk about them. But seriously. Everything you're saying is true. We can't make the same mistakes that were made before with adverts and manipulation. The fact that Facebook bought Oculus IS a little startling and might want to be something to look further into.
nightsoldier1112 Those are more recent additions to team and technology of Rift. At beginning it was collaboration of Palmer and Carmack. Carmack presented it at one of game shows while we still was part of Zenimax family as proof of concept. Before Carmack got involvement lag and distortion on Rift where pretty terrible while Palmer had other things figured out. Valve guys were crucial to push Rift prototypes to the state where it is now (low persistence, positional head tracking) but not part of Rift development during 2012 to my knowledge (at least not directly). I am here painting picture with a broad strokes, at the end it was team effort from all people involved. My point was that Palmer, while being awesome guy and one of key people, didn't solve problem of lag.
Wow that was a really great topic to discuss because virtual reality is becoming more of the big elephant within the room in some states, country, town, home, and stores. Because this is a really big talk lately and alot of people where i am from is like really neutral on this discussion and so people is like no S.A.O. is becoming real we're going to be trapt in the v.r. world in a fight for our lives. not my thoughts just the people around me but to me, personally i believe that this will be a huge huge huge step into the next gen period...
Fantastic talk, well done how you led us to your logical point. Everything possible will be monitored & evaluated. As an original backer & fan of the Rift, I am also aware of FB wanting to track what we do in VR. Right now they are trying to create compelling content & get eyeballs initially. Later in future versions, they will be able to read eye tracking, vocal content, & other bodily functions leading to analyzing & knowing your inclinations almost before you are aware of them. I expect there will be some push back as people become aware, but over time bit by bit it will become normalized & accepted. :(
This proof that in out life has no free will in this vr simulation..our job is just experiencing the life ...but I still believe we are able to do something in future..such as we create a new universe and switch our conciousness to that universe we fully control...I don't know...
Second Life with an Oculus. Or Project Sansar... People have already proven they're not ready. They still think it's the SL platform that's at fault. It would be like everyone saying your Internet Explorer is at fault for all the adult content online.
***** Porn. That's what drove HD graphics. And LCD displays before that. Every advancement in visual tech has gotten its legs because a market wants it for porn. Only then does gaming takes over along side it. But nobody wants to talk about that.
***** Just wait until they figure out how to put a fleshlight in the Vive vibrating controller. It's a conveniently designed and correctly sized hole. Somehow I don't think that was designed by mistake. lmao
if tailored content means as they say different people will get different results from the the same search there is a chance to miss things or find new interests. bottom line... don't try think for me internets.
I just don't think a bot can know my preferences or intentions as they are dynamic and thus any attempt to predict what I'm looking for is flawed. I got better search results years ago especially for things related to programming for example, than i do today.
"Hi my name is (generic american name) and I'm here to explain what you probably already know or don't care enough to learn about VR. I'll make shitty jokes and speak in a way that makes me seem intelligent so you'll keep paying attention. I actually don't know what the fuck I'm talking about but the person speaking in my ear does."
Don't worry, some day you will get laid and be less of a miserable fucking waste of person. Must have sucked growing up getting picked on all the time.
〈hm〉 I had a competition about Virtual reality so was forced to watch this till the end. Not a great video but not bad either. But i do not recommend to watch it unless absolutely necessary.
This isn't TED. It's TEDx. Independently organized TED-style talk that isn't officially TED. It's not TED. Okay, I think I've made the obvious extra obvious enough.
Her thesis here is definitely extracted from Jaron Lanier's latest book "Who Owns The Future", and she does bring up some very good points.

Thanks for your kind words, Josh! Happy New Year!
Amazing talk!
Just wanted to add that to my knowledge lag problem was not tackled by Palmer Lucky. It was by John Carmack.
It was a whole bunch of people... The VR team at Valve in particular had a lot to do with it (Michael Abrash was hired by Oculus for this reason).

There has been MANY things based off of a show/movie/series that dealt with Virtual Reality.
It wasn't 100% based off of SAO you know?
Thanks Ana xxx thought provoking
Fantastic talk

Néo? WOW!
Looong talk, but luckily a meaningful sense at the end. ;)
I hate tailored content, It means I might miss something I wouldn't normally see.

She named her kid Neo. That's dedication. What did you name your kid? Johnny Mnemonic? I doubt it.
Don't worry, some day you will get laid and be less of a miserable fucking waste of person.

VR is a 1991 year.
Meh
It is both funny and sad to see you try to make people laugh while they don't.
Shibashish Mahapatra i almost stopped watching because of that shit
〈hm〉 I had a competition about Virtual reality so was forced to watch this till the end. Not a great video but not bad either. But i do not recommend to watch it unless absolutely necessary.
〈hm〉 They did laugh in the end at 3-4 jokes.
***** Forcefully
This was not a good talk. Quality of TED is really going down the last few years...
This isn't TED. It's TEDx. Independently organized TED-style talk that isn't officially TED. It's not TED. Okay, I think I've made the obvious extra obvious enough.
+RosscoAW didn't know that. The logo states "independent organized TED event" - not "TED style event" or something similar.
LOL THIS WAS SO STUPID
omg, shes hard to listen to, trying to fight sleep.
the content is great but the speaker is ruining it.
