- To the best of my knowledge, I'm the first person to ever film a sidewalk elevator in action. This sidewalk elevator is a Gillespie with a 1,000 pound capacity. Enjoy!
I used to watch these videos a lot when i was 9-10 years old. I wish we could go back to those days.
A lot of these old sidewalk elevators used to be run off city water pressure.
Yup. I've worked on a few of these in my day. To the best of my knowledge, there is still one left in the City of Detroit (in a public school)

those elevators give me nightmares
At my old job at one time there had been a sidewalk elevator it was taken out of service 50 or more years ago. From what remains behind it was a hydro either city water pressure or a tank and power unit. Also there was an Otis hydroelectric fright elevator with a water tank mixed with hydro fluid, resembled an oversize pedestal sump pump. 5HP induction motor 3 phase 208 volt.
What's a hydro?

Actually, Harold Lloyd used one in his 1924 film Safety Last. Twice.

One of the 1980s MacGyver episodes showed Jack Dalton using a sidewalk elevator to access his underground apartment. I think it was 1st or 2nd season, and if I remember right, he drove his motorcycle onto it. Until I saw this video I had not seen once since, and never seen one in real life.

The machine room for the fright elevator is quite interesting, hydro tank is made of steel painted black 2" steel pipe and fittings for the pump head, and solenoid valve, it is manually operated, with a magnetic motor starter, and control relay. A primary 3 phase disconnect fused panel in the electrical room, and a secondary disconnect in the machine room. One problem if the water gets too low in the tank the pump looses it's prime until it's filled back up with water and hydro fluid.

These are real common in San Francisco. Businesses use them for moving goods, because they do not have back allies.
There were a lot of sidewalk fright elevators in the City Of Berkeley where this previous elevator had been. One of the places was a grocery store which did home deliveries, loaded the orders in the basement, brought them up to the vans on the street via the sidewalk elevator. The building where the hydraulic freight elevator was had been torn down.

So if you go in the elevator to get a box and the door closes, does it automatically lock you inside, and you're trapped until someone finds you? I haven't seen him in three weeks.

@jimster586 yea i have a manually controlled elevator vid up. key operated... i am so friggin happy i get to ride that thing... however i always need a dude with a key to move it... or even get inside it... so did you see my sidewalk elevator video? it doesn't move but it is a tour of one that is kinda cool. no flashlight tho so it is kinda dark...
