Hi wombat, mike in rainy Durham England here. Just found your site and subcribed a week or so ago, I was looking at a sk standard strat on ebay, after seeing your review I hit the button and got it for a song. Its for a friend's grandson I'm teaching him to play, just wanted to thank you ,it's a great guitar for him and in new condition. Enjoy the sun I have forgotten what the he'll it looks like happy Christmas mike.
They are pretty much the same quality. I would say that the pickups on the SX Ash Series are a little better to my ear but you can't go wrong with either.
@@emre394 Ok that's a tough one. From memory they were quite similar to play in feel terms. I own the SX Ash Series Tele so the SX Strat neck was familiar right away. It is always hard, for me, to go past a satin or non lacquered neck like the one on the Squier. Just feels so good in the hand. So much of what we like as guitarists comes down to personal tastes. It really is always best to get a hold of one and play it for a bit. I know this can be hard to do sometimes. I hope this has helped you in some small way.
They are very similar but if I had to choose, I would take the ash SST. Just prefer the look personally. Can't go wrong with either. Fit and finish is good on both.
Good review, Wombat! There is a simple mod for one of the tone controls, so that it works on the bridge PU as well as the middle. I think it just involves moving one wire or adding a wire, not sure which :) Basic soldering ability is required, though.
I was thinking of a Tyler guitar, but I heard all of them are basswood body. That discouraged a bit. Then I heard that SX had a series called alder series, that is nice I think, then I found somebody who sells an "SX ash strat" and technically, its wood a ash. The point is I dont know what is ash, never heard of it, is it similar to alder? better? worse? suitable for a strat? not suitable? If ash is similar to basswood, I will go and buy the Tyler (body basswood).
Alder is the standard tone wood for strats. Ash is different tonally but certainly not worse or better than alder, just slightly different. Definitely an upgrade on basswood.
Is the neck finish the same as the glossy finish on the sst62 vintage? I can't stand the smooth finish on the standard variants and I can't really find any info anywhere about it, makes it harder since its a hard decision between the ash and 62
Sure can. It's there from the factory to show it's American swamp ash when you are checking out the guitar in the store. Since the guitar was not mine and had to be returned to the shop after the review I left it in place. It's just a sticker that comes off easily.
I didn't measure it but it seemed roughly the same size. Keep in mind you can't really swap the pickguards very easily between brands because the holes don't always line up. It means extra holes usually need to be drilled in the body.
All full scale Strats have the same size pickguard. The holes may not line up to screw it secured. Usually it's not an issue. Too bad this Strat is not available in the U.S. right now. Hope Rondo brings it back.
I have the same guitar. The only good thing that I can say about it - very nice look. My guitar has not that strat click, sound is dull even with new strings, fretwork is mediocre, string buzz at the last frets. The strangest thing I ever see on guitars is uneven body surfaсe under the tremolo.
Nice GOLDEN AGE playing, bro....I am there with you....
I have sx stratocaster left handed it's great strong pickups

Hey which one is better? This one or Squier affinity strat
They are pretty much the same quality. I would say that the pickups on the SX Ash Series are a little better to my ear but you can't go wrong with either.
Wombat Page thank you
Wombat Page Hey i wanna ask one more thing
Which one feels better for you?

Wombat Page thanks a lot
Hey Wombat, how do you rate this compared to the SST62? In terms of quality of fit and finish. Are they pretty much the same or is it a little nicer?
They are very similar but if I had to choose, I would take the ash SST. Just prefer the look personally. Can't go wrong with either. Fit and finish is good on both.
nice axe

Yeah hate that there is no tone control for the bridge pickup. Also with strat style guitars I keep knocking the volume pot when I play.
Yeah just adding a wire

I've used classical guitar for 8 months. I'm gonna pass the sst ash na. You think should I pass it. Can I play with that for 3-4 years
This guitar will last you for life.
SX Ash or Tagima T635 Brazil?
There is a good chance Samick make both.
SX, by far
At the end of the month i am getting the red double p90s mahogany it is tooo sexy

Both necks are glossy and very similar in feel. Just different tints.
Thank for that, that's a great thing since I absolutely love the glossy neck on the vintage series stuff
KGBSovjet No problem
Pickup?
SX pickups. I talk about them in the video.
can you remove that flag on the pick guard ?
Sure can. It's there from the factory to show it's American swamp ash when you are checking out the guitar in the store. Since the guitar was not mine and had to be returned to the shop after the review I left it in place. It's just a sticker that comes off easily.
every fret ringin in tune?
Yeah it was pretty good.
Does it have the same pickguard size compared to the fender stratocaster?
I didn't measure it but it seemed roughly the same size. Keep in mind you can't really swap the pickguards very easily between brands because the holes don't always line up. It means extra holes usually need to be drilled in the body.

This is the problem with cheaper mass produced guitars. Quality control can waiver from guitar to guitar.
