    I have to say what I LOVE most about this video and performance by Senri. It is the way the drum part and construction of the piece musically illustrate the concept of "adventure." The principle sequence is basically a simple 4/4 structure with a fill every fourth measure. Pretty standard stuff. But the fill does not end on 1, it ends on the eighth note after it, almost as if the drums are going to leave the song behind. She quickly pulls it back, though, by hitting the snare on 2 to return to the structure. Really brilliant stuff. She even accents this by playing the china crash on the same eighth note in the third measure each pass... again, creating a feeling of things maybe getting out of control. I also enjoy some of the stops in the song, almost like little surprises that leave you wondering what is coming next. Senri is really next level. I feel like she is conceptualizing rhythm in abstract ways that haven't been heard before, at least by me. I don't know that I have ever enjoyed listening to somebody play the drums more.

    I love how powerfully she plays. I have too often seen drummers who seem to think that being the loudest drummer is a sign of greatness; as in I can play louder than you so I am better than you. They tend to be hulking brutes who hit as hard as they can with very little internal dynamics. Senri proves one doesn't need to have huge muscles to have a huge sound. Her polished technique allows her to pull out massive sounds out of her drums. It's all about velocity, not how hard you hit. In fact, I've seen drummers who hit so hard they wind up choking the drum. Mainly because using brute strength tends to make a player grip the sticks with more tension and hit into the drum which doesn't allow the drum head to vibrate freely. In one or the few actual lessons I took, my teacher---a woman who also could play very loud as well all other dynamic ranges---talked about letting the sticks come off the head to draw out the sound. That made a big difference in my playing. Not that I've reached Senri's level of control or even that of my teacher. I'm still working on that many years after that lesson.
    Thanks, Andrew.

    • @Luemm3l
      @Luemm3l 3 года назад +2

      it is funny, I had a lesson with my drum teacher recently where we touched upon this very subject briefly. It was practicing "open" single strokes (Tommy Igoes Lifetime workout), so just use the rebound and no fingers at all. I mean even the stick itself has a frequency that can add to the tone. try it out! Try gripping your stick fully and hit the palm of your hand. then do the same, but with the stick dangling loosely in your hand. Might take a few tries, but there should be a difference in sound and also feel.

    I really like her Kiyo*Sen stuff--of which this is one example. It is amazing that she has been working with Kiyomi Otaka for this long; all the way back to her junior high school days. But this is one thing she always seems to have had in her favour; that because of her teacher, Kozo Sugunama, she was able to work with really good musicians from a very young age; this is something that stands her in good stead now.
    This is some of her Kiyo*Sen stuff in more of a context: Drumatica ~ ruclips.net/video/Iwb8fo5guxA/видео.html ; Enamel Doll ~ ruclips.net/video/9lLrflU8VcA/видео.html
    Here she is playing Ner Ner during a sound test with Guthrie Govan; she was the drummer during his Japanese tour at the end of 2015 ~ ruclips.net/video/lVLR2L-0xlE/видео.html

      @@nst.pierre9800 I've watched all 211 vids. Agree. She's not on Senri's level YET! The following is from one of my other posts. Nothing I say here is to diminish Senri’s abilities, she is so awesome and extremely advanced in her skill level. And I hate to compare one to another to say one is better than the other. But after watching this ("Senri's childhood Archives (ages 6 to 10 years old) 幼い頃の千里"ruclips.net/video/24HM6KpY9X4/видео.html (from 2012)), it seems that Yoyoka may have way more potential than I thought. When you compare age to age, it is very clear that Yoyoka is more advanced at this stage than Senri was at the same respective ages. Senri’s current jazz fusion solos have to be some of the best in the world, so creative and engaging. Yoyoka seems to be on track to surpass that in the next 10 years. Can’t wait to see what happens with both these wonderful young ladies. Senri hasn’t maxed out for sure, so there’s no idea what she will be doing in 10 years. Both will be doing something that no one ever imagined is even possible for sure. GO GIRLS!!!

    • @nst.pierre9800
      @nst.pierre9800 3 года назад +1

      @@Glen.Black. These are great points and I agree with most of what you said. Although many things can effect your progress as a musician. Just because Yoyoka is further along at her age than Senri was at the same age doesn't necessarily mean that shes going to surpass Senri by the time she's 23 (or even earlier). Many factors effect the past,present and future progression of these two. It can go either way. One things for sure. They sure will be fun to watch. Also more than likely at a certain point when someone is that unbelievably good comparing them to another that is also unbelievably good becomes a matter of preference and opinion. I'm a guitar player so let me say this. It's like comparing Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton for blues rock. Or Steve Vai and Joe satriani for shredding and metal.

    • @Glen.Black.
      @Glen.Black. 3 года назад

      @@nst.pierre9800 Exactly. Agree with all that! The important thing is, are they having fun, and it is very clear that they both are (at least now)! Hopefully they are both able to make a career out of it (if they want to). Yoyoka has the desire to travel and play with other musicians, but she also has other interests. I selfishly hope she continues to ENJOY playing drums.

    • @nst.pierre9800
      @nst.pierre9800 3 года назад

      @@Glen.Black. I know Yoyoka's parents are performers too and I think she was raised in music and has shown an intense love for music since the beginning and that love doesn't seem to be fading. With everything that kids have to deal with and not having so much time for herself, now would be the time that she would slow down or quit. Since it doesn't look like she will and the fact that her parents have connections in the business,it looks like she's really gonna be going places.

    Most people would hear something like this and think to themselves: " Oh yeah, she's practiced a lot" This may be very true; those chops and dynamics are amazing BUT to be able to perform them as a whole, in the context of a song requires something extra: a 'feel'. This 'feel' (I believe), is a separate entity to jamming or practicing itself and it takes a LONG time to develop, if not at least half as long as she's been playing drums. Some drummers are great and are tight etc, but to see and hear a drummer like this, and experience her 'feel' is something other-worldly. I would be entertained by listening to her tap her fingers on the corner of a coffee table. Nice video, Andrew, I really enjoyed this one. :)

    I am not a musician, not good hearing, uncoordinated, but this young lady is my favourite at the moment. I got here by accident having the Larnell Lewis/Snark Puppy video on my recommendations, thought it was great and forwarded it to a friend who does play drums, albeit occasionally, and they said great, now try Gavin Harrison. So the adventure started, Gavin Harrison I liked and listened to dozens of times, and then I arrived at the little bundle of energy, Yoyo, playing Burn, a song I was very familiar with. That progressed, naturally to Senri, and that was it, I was hooked. I've listened to dozens of other drummers here, and on Drumeo, for example, and slowly begun to understand what I'm hearing, there are some amazing players out there, but at the end of the day if somebody said you can only listed to one drummer then its her by a country mile, have no idea of what it is but she just plays in a way that connects with me.

    Senri is the best female drummer in the world. Totally in a class by herself. She is kind of like a cross between Joe Morello and Jeff Porcaro. She has already proven that she can play any type of music, but I can't get into what she likes. I love to watch her play, but other than her, I don't bother. But, if she likes this, she likes it. I would like to see her go back to playing rock, but this type of music makes her happy. Perfect pocket in whatever music she drums to.

Comparing her with Kanade and Yoyoka at the age of 11/12, in my opinion she was not the best of the three, now she is. If the other two will have the same development, Japanese female drumming will be in the upper league of drumming as a whole for years to come. You had a question if she also was playing bass. No she was not. What I can tell you is that she has performed a session with imho the best on bass (male or female) being Mohini Dey. A Japanese and Indian diamond rubbing eachother musically and let eachother shine like the 'Tenpi' on mount Fuji.

    Glad you reacted to this performance by Ms Kawaguchi. (Btw, it's pronounced "Senree". Only the Americans could possibly corrupt the letter "i" to such a point where many are now mispronouncing names of people and places. Yes, Iraq, Iran and Ikea are SUPPOSED to be pronounced as "Ee-raak", "Ee-raan" and "Ee-kay-ya", but guess who would go wreck those names. But I digress).

    Would love it if you could react to Senri Kawaguchi and Kanade Sato 2012, Live at Vinawalk (ruclips.net/video/4sf3DgS3LEA/видео.html ). They were so young back then but played Some Skunk Funk by Brecker Brothers so well together. It was quite the battle between them. BTW, just discovered your channel and watched a bunch of videos. Look forward to more. Subscribed!

    As a guitarist I have wondered why I love Senri's playing so much. There are a few (not too many) male drummers that may be more technically proficient than her but they have one disadvantage. Testosterone. lol Male ego often causes male drummers to try and be too technical and often hit too hard, rather than play what suites the actual piece they are adding to. That's right, the drums like all instruments is only a part of several instruments combined to create a complete song. Us blokes tend to forget that and unfortunately our ego gets in the way. Senri, on the other hand has mastered this and is the reason why I love listening to her playing. Her drumming always seems to compliment the piece she plays perfectly. Maybe we also need more female guitar players. lol

      @@nst.pierre9800 Thanks, yes I have heard Tina but would love to hear her play live. Orianthi would be my favorite female guitar player but in my opinion Senri is at a completely different level. ruclips.net/video/nFMOULzi6oM/видео.html There are many excellent female violin players but only very good guitarists in my opinion. I am sure this will change soon. Assuming that you enjoy the shredding style Guthrie Govan is the best that I have heard. In fact he can play anything. Enjoy ruclips.net/video/y8NRJ-dfr4Y/видео.html

      @@vietnguyen4312 I respect your opinion but I have to disagree. Tina S and LisaX are both far beyond merely "very good". Maybe they aren't quite what Senri does for the drums but not very far off either (imo). Btw I am aware of guthrie goven. He and Paul Gilbert (which she is a student of) are huge inspirations of Lisa X. On a side note if you aren't already aware of him you absolutely need to check out Ichika Nito. He is very unique and tremendous on the guitar.

      Japanese female drmmers and percussionists are renowned for their technical excellence, what's different about Senri Kawaguchi is that she hits like a taiko drummer, she gets that awesome sound because she hits harder than most male drummers with that friendly smile of hers and without even breaking a sweat. It's just awesome.

    I have a 9 year old daughter. I play drums and gave my set as my new one is on order and coming. She play's Ok, but she doesn't love drums. I accept that, and it breaks my heart. When I first saw Senri playing years ago, I admit, I wished my little girl would pick it up like her, but I love my little one no matter, and I love how Senri just loves playing. It makes all the difference, even if you don't have God given talent like her, the chops, money to get a nice set, etc. She is awesome.

      I think it is a fine line to walk as parent/teacher when a kid obviously has heaps of talents, but no fun. I sometimes wish my parents forced me more to practice when I got basically piano lessons for free, because during that time, I was a kid, it was some sort of chore to me, today I regret not getting whipped back to training, imagining where I could be today. On the other hand, if you have child prodigies who put on a show and are admired, but feel really unhappy, that is also not the right thing to do.
