Contra: Operation Galuga Review - IS CONTRA FINALLY BACK?

- A lot of what Contra: Operation Galuga does poorly can be ignored, at least by those looking for a good run and gun or Contra experience. This game isn’t as good as the classics that it is inspired from, or not even as good as the peak of the modern era, which was Contra 4. But it is a good, well playing, fun entry into the canon, one that retains all the strengths of the franchise, and executes on them well enough to invite plays and replays by those that like this style of game.
It won’t ever top anyone’s list of favorite Contra or run and gun game, and it will certainly not convert anyone who was not already a fan of the IP or the genre, but to those already in the know? It’s a good enough title to be worth checking out, even with all the flaws and caveats that come bundled with the recommendation.
It's not like anyone ever played a Contra game for its story or graphics. It's a series of side-scrolling shoot'em up games. Mostly popular in the 80's and 90's, on arcades and nes, beloved by old school gamers, who remember the good old days of great co-op games, played with your buddies right next to the fat tv, with those sci-fi like, wired controllers. Operation Galuga is everything a Contra enthusiast could ask for! I hope they continue to make more titles like this one.

yeah this thing just kinda came and went im surprized i dont hear about it. This and slave zero X are the most 90s style games that have come out recently. oh and macross also droped a day after this gem.
Funny thing is, the story is pretty decent with great voice acting. Neo Contra which is one of my favorites had a story that was way out there as well as crazy moments. Remember the talking dog called Dog Contra, plant Contra and your character running on helicopter blades while shooting down things in the air? For anyone who want second opinion reviews you will find videos of people giving it an 8/10. I give it an 8/10 and 1 point is taken off due to not having an online co-op mode. Would have been a 9/10 for me and definitely worth $40 bucks. I bought it for $35 dollars on steam when it came out and it was a sale. Don’t know if that was part of beating the demo or what. But if anyone want to wait on a sale then $30 would be good.
I seriously didn't think I'd buy this game but playing the demo got me hooked and now grinding to unlock perks and characters and enjoying the game.
Yeah, quite frankly, it's in my top 3 of Contras, sitting pretty next to 1 NES, and Alien Wars.
It still makes me sad how many people slept on Hardcorps Uprising. WHY Konami didn’t put the Contra name on that will never make sense. It’s AWESOME!
I hope they add it to the PlayStation network. Loved that game. Will play my ps3 just to play it

OMG there are people who still remember Uprising, still the best contra game. Pissed me the hell off it never ported to PS network or even Switch. I'd buy it in a heartbeat

I always liked Metal Slug more than Contra. The art style and play style is better and more exciting in Metal Slug.
If anyone paid attention to this guy he is not a true fan of Contra based off what he said and how he played. Then he goes on to say Contra 4 on DS looked better? Contra 4 looked good for what it is and that’s a more hi rez Contra 3 which is what it was going for. So trust me, to all Contra fans of Contra 1-4 this is a solid 8/10. Read the comment section for those who actually have and played the game.
The low reviews some people giving this is because they compare it too triple a games of today. This looks awesome retro side scrolling with the same awesome run and gun but with a modern update. I would give this 8.5/10
No online co-op for a modern day Contra game is a downer.
How is that even possible on a game like this in 2024?
1980's games is a good game. it's doesn't matter if it's low budget game.. the important things about the game u can enjoy to play..

It's my favorite Contra in the series.
I still play it all the time. 😂 and still trying for that S rank finish. Closest I got was 1 death 1 time. I can do it consistently on 2 or 4 deaths tho 😂
@playfuladdiction4242 I got an S rank way back when and was able to beat it without dying. Trust me when I tell you that the pay off was totally worth it. I never laughed so hard in my life at that time.
@blackonyx1 I recently got ps3 and dl SS and I've been playing levels 5, 6, and 7 back to back in training mode. I'm gonna get that S rank. And kudos for beating it. You know it's ranked hardest PS2 game of all time right. You da man lol

Some believe it looks generic, almost like a mobile game. I don't mind it. Could they have gone with unique visuals? Sure but I don't think it's a big deal

I feel like the reviewer didn't really appreciate Contra in the 80s, still doesn't now and missed the point of Contra. It's a co-op shooter, plain and simple. The graphics don't need to be Unreal 5, they're actually what I expected. Personally, the game is a blast and even more so with the perks and new characters added.
It’s a fun game. No need for graphics or story. Set the difficulty high, remove the health bar and experience why these games were great.
Switching the shooting to right trigger and aim to left trigger helps a lot.

Contra on the SNES and PS2 were very nice looking games. Contra 3 was one of the best looking games in the system and SH and Neo were no slouch.
This new one looks like a mishmash of good and meh textures. Sometimes the textures are very detailed but sometimes meh.
Neo's colors look washed out. Brown and greys everywhere. Alien Wars looked great though, yes.
For me , its a great game. The only problem is the input delay in the switch port.
The graphic is at least better than pixel games nowadays

No, it absolutely does not!
I really;Lt didn’t like the game to be honest because it felt like a chore playing it. On the bright side it had plenty of extras that would be great if they weren’t so expensive and the game was so lack luster to play. It’s really said because way forwards contra 4 is a masterpiece and I still play it to this day. If they can balance some of the gameplay and certain mechanics with updates, I may venture back to this game.
It brings back the good old days and now I can play it on an easier mode 😀
The devs played it safe this time around CONTRA Rogue Corps was awful. It looks like a mobile phone game with a lot of recycled gameplay elements from the 2d contra games . Get it on sale .

I think its a really good game, graphics / art style not great but its not bothering me as much as how zoomed out the view is.
As a contra fan it’s decent, maybe a 7.5. Worth playing but could be a lot better. The end of the story made it sound like they will remake alien wars so they can improve on it there
I do not believe you ever really played the original Contra and could get past the second level even with the code. The person playing is pretty damn bad.
Contra is too easy to no death run for anyone to brag about beating it. He also said that he no longer has the dexterity for contra in the video
This is horrible because I’ve noticed that some of these reviewers are either not a fan of the franchise or was probably never like it because they hated since back then when they couldn’t beat the 2nd level. Something seems off with some of the reviews for this game. I love it and have put more hours in it than HD2. That’s because I’m a huge Contra fan with my favorites being Contra 1-4 and rebirth. This game has so many ways to play it. Only real problem is no online play.

Contra Games were criticized for having silly to no story at all, now you complain it has a story, had this game come out in 2019 instead of Rogue Corps, people would complain its more of the same and the formula is getting old, they did something new with Rogue Corps people complained that its too different, the game doesn't look like the most realistic graphics ever, it sucks, its not running at 30000 fps, it sucks.... for fuck sakes, gamers today are like a bunch of woman, nothing is never good enough for them...
This game is good and having a blast. Story is actually well done for what it is.
The graphics are meh, but what's important to me is fun gameplay. I have the Switch version, so that should tell you everything.

Can't shake the "mobile game" feel of this game. It's rough being a Contra fan let me tell u.
It’s not as bad as it looks. In 4k/60 it’s a nice looking game just not a great looking one. Other than that the game is good.

Is easy to notice the excess of nostalgia in the graphics, sure it doesn't have a AAA graphics but is far from bad
The only 2D contra with good sprites are super contra and contra 4, all the others you can easily see how badly they aged
Contra 3 aged great I think. Sprite art is still top notch and it plays like a dream. "But muh 7 mode". Who cares? Even Contra 1 and Super had levels taken up by something that breaks up gameplay.
Loving it so far and been trying to master it. The swiitch version needs a serious update though, it crashes on me everytime I play it. Always on stage 5 or 6. Also gotta add, the story is god awful and ruins the game. Arcade mode is my preferred cus it cuts the story parts out

The demo was exactly that, a demo. They went old school with the demo to where it’s a small taste of the game. The actual game is a lot better. But this of course is if you are a true Contra fan. If your not into these type of games then yea it’s not for you.
