How a warmer Arctic could intensify extreme weather

  • Is there a link between the vanishing Arctic sea ice and extreme weather?
Some prominent climate researchers think so. That’s because warming temperatures in the Arctic are altering the behavior of the polar jet stream, a high-altitude river of air that drives weather patterns across the globe. As the winds that propel the jet stream weaken, storms, droughts, and extreme heat and cold move over continents at slower rates, meaning bad weather can stick around for longer.
Eli Kintisch reports aboard the Norwegian research vessel Helmer Hanssen about how changing conditions at the top of the world could be impacting weather far away.
This video is part 2 of a three-part series on the changing Arctic.

Because MAN is NATURE... the mixed weather is the mixing of the races around the world.. also HOLLYWOOD is a form of occult magic.. it is called IMAGE POWER... by creating a fantasy storyline and creating an image whomever experiences(views) the theatrical performance will hold that within them and then recreate that image into manifestation through there life force/dream time ... and if more bodies are holding that fantasy story within there minds then it is only a matter of time and willful ignorance for it to come into manifestation... in example you are observing and making a connection of the manifested reality to the fantasy image you are holding, from the satanic ritual of IMAGE POWER you participated in by playing the role of AUDIENCE

Mainly, the sarcastic "Damn Global Warming," that people like to say anytime we get cold weather after March. I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets infuriated by how ignorant these people can be. Nikki Lee sorry for disrespect but have you ever lived here during the 90's or 80's?
Usually we experience more rain that's why that person complained that our place, Philippines become too hot for us despite at the tropics.
38 and higher is not normal for us here because the Oceans and seas cool the islands. NOW, because the air is too hot, Water from the oceans around the islands doesn't condense and precipitate easily unlike before.
Preventing any precipitation to cool us here.
Hot dry summers here extnded over the rainy months.
Wet and cooler months were reduced to less than three months unlike before we had 4-5 usually starting at September but now, we here in the Philippines, experience cool northern winds much later or none at all depending on that Jet stream.
So what change happen to your place?

Victoria's getting it worse yes, at least at this stage! No. Every « renewable solution » we have won’t work. Solar panel ? They are an ecological disaster and creating them cost more energy to create than it can possibly make. Same for wind turbines and the rest. Plus batteries that are necessary for them are made unethically, are an ecological disaster too, and 80% of them are made in China.

The US voters were held hostage by their two corporate-owned, bought-and-paid-for political parties. What were we supposed to do? Not vote? Vote third party (like I did) and have no chance of winning? Vote for a corporate shill (whether Democrat or Republican)? Seriously, what were we supposed to do, exactly? The Democrats spent most the election scared witless that someone they didn't control and who might change things could win, so they put everything they had into fighting Bernie Sanders, and did next to nothing to stp Trump. Americans were trapped with no way out in the previous election, and it's looking like the Democrats and Republicans might be planning a repeat performance. It's not our fault. I voted (in botht he election AND the primaries.) What else could I have done?

while it's true the ice reflects the heat back, have you ever stood on sand v grass? If we can stop desertification & insulate the ground in other areas of the world by covering it with grass & mulch instead of bare desert, it will have the same impact & that we DO have the technology to do & it IS cost viable!
We can use "holistic grazing" or mass bio-char, or a combination of both (ideally bio-char to kick start & then grazing to maintain, & build & then costs to maintain the system come from the food it produces. We just need to stop trying to come up with tech to do crazy solutions & look at what we already have that we can actually implement in a way that will reverse this & actually start doing it, not delaying!!!!! We did it with the Ozone hole & aerosol sprays, time to repeat that success

That sounds like a great idea! Now, what material is plentiful in the arctic so that we don’t have to use tonnes of fossil fuels to transport the blanket? Water is plentiful! How about we make the blanket out of ice?

    • @lilaclizard4504
      @lilaclizard4504 6 лет назад +6

Ian, needs to be native grasses, can't import grasses from everywhere! True deserts are desert, it's the land that's technically semi-arid that has turned to desert that we need to focus on. Need to work from the edges, replanting native grasses that can tollerate the low levels of rain & capture & hold the rain when it falls a couple of times a year.
Right now, large areas of land get that rain, then loose it again within a day or 2 to mass evaporation, if we can retain that water & allow it to evaporate off much slower, we can convert it back to grassland. Carbon into the soil will hold it (bio-char or organic matter including manure dung beetles buried there & old grass roots), so will mulch on the surface, such as trampled old dead grass.
2 million acres of grassland in Africa are currently burnt each year, to clear the dead material so the fresh growth can continue instead of dying from suffocation. Bio-char that & dig into the soil, or bring in a mob of animals to eat/trample it once a year & that land can then hold the rain next time it happens

Let me see if I understand this cycle. The temperatures in the Arctic are melting Arctic sea ice that _previously_ reflected sunlight back into space, and now, instead, that sunlight is being absorbed into the Arctic Ocean, and causing it to evaporate, increasing the amount of water vapor in the Arctic atmosphere. Has anyone considered reflecting or absorbing more sunlight before it _gets_ to Earth? Is _that_ feasible?

    • @ChronicallyCurious

I think a somewhat more feasible solution that has been attempted on some scale previously is to cover large areas with white. White plastic or fabric or paint. I know that this has been discussed. Getting anything into space is ridiculously hard because a pound costs about $10,000 to get into space. There are several ways people have suggested putting things in space to reflect sunlight, from a sort of.. space umbrella... to thousands of little butterfly type things. There's also the suggestion of artificially recreating the fallout from a super volcano to help shield the earth from the sun's rays (which seems like the most drastic way, and the most likely to go awry, and hardest to revert if it goes wrong). The whole idea of geoengineering is very cool, but most of it is still conceptual. Still, some towns are starting to paint their asphalt white, to prefer people using white roofing. I think the answer is in there somewhere, paired with tons of other things and ways we can cut back here and there on our output. The longer it takes us to figure out, the harder it's going to be, but I've got to believe we can do it.

There are several ways that the government and business can reduce their impact, but ultimately us as individuals hold responsibility as well. At the very least, it looks like the vast majority of people here believe in global climate change (it's sad that this seems to have become a high bar to overcome), I strongly recommend everyone do their own part in changing their demands of the market. Namely, start being low-waste and zero waste if you can manage. Buy products that are compostable, recycled and recyclable; boycott businesses with poor environmental practices. Buy your food locally and I also suggest become vegetarian or vegan. Refuse plastic bags and use reusable ones; the same goes for utensils. Hell, you can make a lot of your own products but you can also pay for the convenience of already-manufactured products from sustainable stores.
Show the market this is what we demand and if they don't comply, they won't be getting our business and they'll lose theirs if they don't change. We have a lot more power than we believe and we can and are the beginning and the end of this problem. Even if our numbers would be relatively small, a significant reduction in the profit of unsustainable companies is enough for them to consider making a change. This'll get the ball rolling as more people will consider joining the movement to reduce their waste when they see more sustainable products and businesses.

One of the best ways to visualize the weakening and changing in behavior of the jet stream is to look at tornado trends in the US. Tornadoes in America generally require a strong dip in the jet stream in the west. Since we've been seeing a dip in the east (the exact opposite of what tornadoes like) much more often during the 2010s, along with a general weakening of the jet, tornadoes since 2012 have been below average and located much further east than typically. 2012 and 2013 set record lows for tornadoes, and 2014, 2016, and 2017 saw either far below average tornado activity or a very noticeable displacement of tornado activity into the eastern US.

Video of it's impact ruclips.net/video/vpTHi7O66pI/видео.html and it's being used more & more in Australia, mostly under the name of "intensive managed rotational grazing" & is showing itself to be consistently successful

      @kusog3 6 лет назад +1

@Raghunath, while plastic production is one of the problems in plastic pollution, the main problem is that the companies that make them isn't participating in the clean up. I don't think we can actually stop production of plastic since it has tremendous daily use for hospitals and or other convenience. Instead of stopping plastic production, we should get companies who make them GET INVOLVED in the clean up operation. Plastics can be recycled into bricks that can build houses or put to some other uses but these companies that make them refuses to get involved.

@@CaliRepublic77 Partially because of solar cycles (but those are mostly short-term events, like the Little Ice Age during the Maunder Minimum, a few hundred years ago), and maybe the Milankovitch Cycles (Earth goes through a "wobbling" process over the course of tens of thousands of years).

    • @lilaclizard4504

Passing Time, yes we all need to reduce emissions, BUT that's only putting the breaks on, it does NOTHING to kick the engine into reverse & stop it actually going over the cliff, we HAVE to start actually REVERSING the CO2 levels & do it NOW! It may already be at a point where doing that won't even stop the cliff, but at least it's a shot, the breaks alone really aren't!
holistic grazing and/or bio-char on a MASS scale are the only 2 options I know of that can be implemented today in a realistic, cost viable way to genuinely reverse the process. & they're going to take at least 10 years to really get to the scale needed if paying for themselves/little cost
Bio-charing every leaf that falls from boral forests would achieve it in a year or 2, but I doubt that's within the cost range people are willing to spend & again, this stuff is to bring CO2 levels down ONLY it's not reducing the temperature, there's still a time lag!

Passing Time Passing Time yes but it's not enough ..why? well because consuming is embedded in our culture ..it is our culture we basically work and work to buy things such as cars alot of food, clothes or other stuff that's advertised on t.v, that only put us in debt, so yes we can cut back but how if we all depend on it :/ I guarantee you that everything you do leads to emissions

Weather changes over time, during Medieval times and Roman times the temperature was high and civilizations thrived. After the Medieval warm period we had a little ice age(which had severe negative effects) and what annoys me is that temperature curve graph that starts from there when the climate was unusally cold. So i would say the temperature has come up partly normally and partly man made, but i would say getting warmer is better than colder, especially if you live north like i do.
Random side note. I cringe how in adept places that arent used to cold and snow, are in dealing with it.
So my advice would be not to be so afraid of the change, but to adapt to it. Other places will suffer and other places will thrive due to global warming.

Hey there! Your friendly Australian here, it has been one hectic summer/autumn for us. Normally our Autumn should have been colder, wetter and a little bit British.(*cough* Commonwealth *cough*)
But for the past 2 years, we had extended dry summers with a hotter autumn. Is it good?
HELL NO. As much as we live for the beach weather, it has had significant impact on the native wildlife. Dry condition means higher changes of large scale bushfires. It also means a huge reduction in food that impacts our wildlife food chain. More juvie are undernourished and taken in by wildlife rescue because of this.
So next time some one is going to say "climate change isn't real". I'll sent a pack of redbacks and saltwater into your yard.

People should watch this, some say that global warming and climate change isn't true. We should all be aware and take responsibility for the effects of all human interference. I'm from the Philippines, where last 2013 super typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda took countless lives of our countrymen - our country suffered greatly because of this. Some are in denial in issues like this, but we know and experienced the devastating effects. Let's not wait for another catastrophe to happen.
