This is helpful and well done. I just got the Synchronized Solo Strings and like them For your examples, I prefer the Chamber Strings with Solo strings over the Dimension Strings alone. update: I've been working with the VSL solos and the Chambers both Synchronized versions updated form VSL and the results are very good.Thank you for the helpful tips in your video. Your video is one of the best if not the best on these products.
Your work is awesome. I am sending you a PM over on the VSL forum asking a question about MIRx. Thanks for everything you do to help others. You are terrific!
Bravo! Great job Beat. After suffering through the VSL thread, this was truly a treat. The Chamber strings have a nice midrange that DS somehow lacks. Yet, the separation of the individual players of DS is nice. If only there was only an acceptable middle ground. Thanks for not using MIR.
Wonderful. Thanks for all the effort you put into making this video. Very helpful when it comes to auditioning before making a potentially expensive purchase.
Thanks a lot for this comparison, very useful indeed! I must say that I prefer the sound of the Chamber Strings with and without the Solo Strings. Greetings from Switzerland, Max
Hello Max Thanks for the kind feedback. About the sound of libraries: It's always a matter of tast of course and it probably depends on the use. Mach's guet. En liebe Gruess us Brugg Beat
Thanks for doing this; I agree with a poster below - based on hearing I'm a tad in favor of the Chamber + Solo Strings combo. This is very useful, and thank you so much for walking through your setup on doing this comparison!!
This is great, and exactly what I was looking for. Thank you Beat. At first I was attracted to the Chamber/Solo ensemble but after several listenings I came to the view that the pitch and tempo imperfections introduced by the DS (and perhaps the deeper articulation set) give it more realism, even though the sonic quality of the samples may not be as good as the pricier Chamber Strings/Solo Strings sets. The exaggerated vibrato of the vibrato DS samples, however, takes away from the realism to some extent. Thanks again. This is invaluable in deciding which library to invest in.
Edward Purdy Thanks for your feedback. This comparison is not thought for saying this or that is the better library. It mainly shall show the sound on the same pre-conditions. So I'm happy that my video was a help for the decision "DS or not". Have fun with your samples Beat
This is great Beat, many thanks for doing this. The one combination that intrigues me is Solo Strings as a "first chair" for Dimension Strings, have you contemplated or tried that combination?
Chamber with solo strings sounds best to me. Didn't like DS at all by itself. I am in the market for VSL Strings, and deciding on Synchron Strings 1 for now...any videos or compositions with these? Any comments on them? Thanks.
Hello! :) I'm not sure if I got that right... is the example at about 1:00 JUST the "tripled" solo strings or already the mixture between solos and chamber strings? Thanks for that video! kind regards!
Hi LukCsa You got it right. I played the solo violin 3 times (unison but nevertheless with different samples). I pitched it up on the midi-side and down again at the audio side and reverse. Once I played it in original pitch (midi and audio). So you get a 3-violin-ensemble... a small "dimension ensemble" so to say... I did it of course also for the voices second violine, the viola,... Best Beat
+Beat Kaufmann Thank you for the quick response! I'm actually very impressed by the sound those three instruments produce! I think, this will be my temporary way to simulate the Chamber strings in the SE2... :D Kind regards, Lukas
I use the same samples for both -the first and the second violin. In case of unison voices I transpose the 2nd violins +1 on the midi side and at the audio side -1. So they play the correct tone but with other samples...
Hello Chris Choir www.musik-produktion-createc.ch/Telemann_Viola_Suite_in_DMaj.mid I found the midifile somewhere on the internet. After I had prepared the midifile to make it an ideal starting point for the use with samples, I saved it again (current download above). Unfortunately I don't know the author who was responsible for the original setting of the notes. Thanks at this point to the unknown. Best regards Beat Kaufmann
Hi vosk seyur Your ":)" probably knows that VSL only comes with one violin which we use for all the violin voices in a piece. Nevertheless, there is a solution for creating a sort of second violin: Use the midi pitch (for instance +2 half-tones and on the audio side we transpose the played melody -2 half-tones down. So you will get a sort of 2nd violin (the same notes are played by other samples). Of course this trick does not replace a real second recorded violin.
this is so pleasing to hear. Even after all these years, VSL libraries hold up tremendously in the hands of a skilled programmer. WOW!
Thanks alot for the nice compliment.

Wow! Thank you so much. Helped me a lot making a decision, what to buy.
I'm glad to hear that. We all benefit from each other if we share our experiences from time to time.
Good luck, Beat
great video!

Thanks so much for this, to my ears DS sounds somehow livelier, though slightly less detailed. I think I prefer DS
Thanks for your comment. Further: The sound of instruments and samples is also a matter of taste...
Question, how do you achieve a 2nd violin with Chamber Strings?
I use the same samples for both -the first and the second violin. In case of unison voices I transpose the 2nd violins +1 on the midi side and at the audio side -1. So they play the correct tone but with other samples...
Hi is the midi file available?

Interesting, where are you found the Violins 2 in vienna library? :)
