As an amateur luthier, I very much appreciate seeing the idiosyncrasies of builds. It's all too common to see a perfectly groomed video cutting out any flaws or challenges experienced along the way. The guitartan is my favorite entry. Not because it's the most expertly crafted or aesthetically engineered to the nines, but because it shows a lot of heart and personality. You built this with minimal tools in your flat with a glass of scotch at hand, which I can relate to. And to be clear, this is one of the better looking V guitars I've ever seen. Slàinte mhath!
10:35 The shape of the pickguard between the pickups and along the bottom edge looks like a West Highland Terrier silhouette, so you have a little more Scottishness on the guitar than you may have planned. Great design for your entry and it has got my vote. Best of luck.
I voted for you on my phone, my girlfriend's phone, mom's phone, my computer, and tablet. It's such a beautiful guitar and it makes me proud to be Scottish. Well, half that is. Absolutely gorgeous work Colin!
I really enjoy how he explains everything (not only in this video but in every video on this channel) with abslute precision yet simplicity. I'm no guitar builider but after watching this I fell like I could be.
If I could afford it, I would be bidding on this. I just got someone appreciate the work that went into this beauty and plays the hell out of it. Well done, sir.
I love this. I almost trashed a guitar kit I spent a month in my spare time sanding, painting, gluing when my CTS pots wouldn't fit in the F holes. Instead I took a breathe and hack saw blade to make the hole bigger. Currently my best sounding guitar. Nice to see pros have issues too!
I went to the GGBO 2021 website and voted for the Guitartan. I am not a fan of the Flying V style guitar but your build and review videos were hilarious and spoke to the self deprecating 47% Scottish blood flowing in my veins. It helps that the guitar sounds amazing (especially when you played Scotland the Brave and Loch Lomond on it). Don’t get me wrong - all the builders made beautiful instruments. Some folks like Réti and Swift had unique and amazing concepts that intrigued me but alas, your Guitartan simply won me over.
Realising im absolute not scottish enough to bid for it ... i voted for your build instead :D .. had the biggest giggle out your video in the GGBO :) Cheers from germany!
In many ways seeing what went pear shaped is more interesting. More is learned. And the end result came out really well. Well done, that deserves a vote.
Muy italian Grandfather used to say "Measure 7 times, cut once" and even following that advice i still manage to fuck it up sometimes hahaha Greetings from Argentina Colin!!
2:30 No mate, the vise was clamping the wood therefore squeezing the blade. I know from doing Skirting board and architrave in college and trying to cut the boards to length between two benches over 1 meter apart causing gravity to produce the same problem to had.
i love the look of this thing. mad lad. killer idea of using the tartan in this way. wasn't sure how you were going to pull it off, but the metal edge is just great.
Appreciate the honesty of showing your mistakes colin! You've made a great guitar under difficult circumstances. Question, is there any tape in the tape machine running in the background?
***** NOTE: The GGBO website is now saying the auction will be running from June 22 to July 2. ***** Colin, perhaps you could update the description box of this video and your webpage so those of us who REALLY want that 'Guitartan', can be ready when the auction actually goes live. P.S. - Colin, I absolutely LOVE your build man. In my opinion, it's the best one of the lot; hands down. \m/
You have got to be kidding me... Well, guess I'm resending a week's worth of press release emails again on Monday. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
You're far from the only one. Every single project will always have a setback, even if done by professionals at the top of their game. Nothing ever goes exactly to plan.
@@stevenarmstrong5364 When I get an piece of insect in the lacquer, I like to say it’s not a bug, it’s a feature. The dad humor is an occupational hazard of lutherie.
Beautiful work! I am not currently in condition to either donate or bid (besides, they'd drum me out of Clan MacFarlane if I showed up with this). Tried to vote for you, but the "submission limit has been reached for this form."
This turned out to be an excellent guitar ... especially despite your lack of a decent workbench and only having basic tools ! I'm unsure what state the tartan cloth will be in after sweat, booze and blood exposure over a few years, but it's a brilliant and subtle counterbalance to the various Union Jack emblazoned guitars (Oasis E335 ? etc). I am not encouraging you to build a Saltire 'X' shaped White and Blue guitar next ... ! 😂 Very impressed, especially as it sounds great as well as looking good. Well done !
I know very little about guitar building, but I do know more about woodworking. You can make your bench a LOT more rigid and pleasant by triangulating the legs, either with actual cross braces (50x12 wood just screwed on), or putting sheet material (e.g. 12 mm plywood) on the side and rear face of the legs. Not as good as a new heavy bench, but cheaper! On planing, the KEY requirement is a blade you can literally shave with. Get a sharpening guide, to control the angle (just the cheap kind that side-clamps is fine). Since fine-grit sharpening stones are very expensive, just use 1200 grit silicon carbide abrasive sheets, glued down on something flat.
“Measure twice, cut once”, or measure 3 or more times, then cut, only once. You can’t cut more times, unless you have to remake the part. You can cut as many times as you want.
Where'd you get the barrel from? Some local distillery or one of the major bois? (Btw, I kept seeing that bottle of Laphroaig you sneak into the vids so I got one. Not for me, but my dad loves it.)
Well I'm in an odd mood and found myself not wanting to enjoy this video. Inside the first minute of the woodwork though and my strop evaporated. This is AWESOME. Everything I do seems to have tons of stuff go wrong so I appreciated seeing the challenges and derps involved in the project. Kudos sir, beastly content

Thank you for this savage reference ma dude
"oh... I forgot to make the template, didn't I.". Thanks for a hearty laugh. I've done this kinda thing myself.
The best part was I went looking for it because I was in such denial that I refused to accept I hadn't done it

"Conductive paint is for LAZY people!" - great, now I need to figure out where to get some. Too much work, I guess, I'll keep using copper tape ;)
Crimson guitars sell shielding paint.

With my woodworking skill it's more like "Measure 4 times, and still somehow mess up."
Wood just doesn't behave like you want it to.
Honestly one of my favorite RUclipsrs
Dude. Your guitar looks awesome.
Your guitartan won! Outstanding! And congratulations, Chris.
Appreciate you putting this out- it's never straight forward! A lot of work you put in dude, totally worth it for the finished guitar 🤘
CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING THE COMPETITION!
Didn't realise all the problems you went through during the build. It still looks phenomenal as an end product. Great video, Colin! Stay safe!
Amazing build Colin!
You rock Colin... Good luck!
You totally kilt it with this build, Colin!
I’m dying🤣 Scotland Forever!

The floor is always the most stable surface.

Love this build buddy 👍✌😎
Are you recording to tape or using it as a delay? Cool Reel to Reel.
Take care and all the best

I'm using it as a delay, I think it sounds pretty good for that application

Why does the voting system have a limit...
It did the same for me, I didnt even get a chance to vote once.
I'd figure that pickguard/frame could take off some knuckle skin. Looks aside, that guitar sounds awesome. Great work.
Play some Jethro Tull and Big Country! Cool ax btw!
I don't think I have a drop of Scottish in my blood, but I love the country and I love this guitar. It just needs a bag hanging off of it😁
