Kevin I have been seeing all your old videos and I enjoy them as the new ones. This in particular touch my heart, I just to thank you for sharing this biscuits recipe from your Grand Mother.
I did not have the opportunity of knowing my grands from my mother's side. From father's side my granma was already very old and I just remember her being sitting in a chair with a Rosary in the hand and praying almost the whole day.
I was not born in USA. I am from South America. Right now 1'm already a citizen and have living here for 23 years. I love the culture specially how close grandparents are with the children.
Even though, I will be making this Biscuits and remembering such a special story you grandma every time I will be making them.

I've never made a successful biscuit and I try every recipe I find. Your video was so very enjoyable and I loved hearing all about your Grandmother's biscuits. I am #7 of a family of 16 children. However, Mom's kitchen was off limits to us children. She did it all by herself! A tremendous baker of bread and cook in general.
Also, I never knew Grandparents on either side and feel as if I missed a great experience. I had to laugh out loud at a couple of your comments especially the lard. Mom used lard too for all her cooking and baking. It was especially funny when you said you doubted your Grandma used lard to brush the tops of her baked biscuits. I just found your RUclips display today and look forward to all you have to offer in recipes and advice. This 73 year old gal is always open for new ideas. Thank you and God Bless!

My mother used lard in her scone recipe. This would have been much cheaper than butter. I only knew one grandmother and she died when I was four. She was a remarkable woman whom I remember well from whom I have some excellent recipes. One of these is Guard's Club Cake. There were a number of gentleman's clubs in London, UK, including the Guard's Club (presumably set up. for officers of the various guards regiments). Apparently, it was customary, mid morning, to serve cake, accompanied by a glass of Madeira wine to members. This is the origin of the British Madeira cake, a plain loaf cake of a fairly close texture, similar to a Genoese sponge, always topped with a slice or two of candied lime peel. The Guard's Club Cake was a fruit mixture made with lard rubbed into the flour. It's a lovely. moist cake. I have another great fruit cake recipe from my mother which she got from one of her oldest and best friends and was consequently called Verna's fruit cake. One of the instructions for this recipe is to leave all the dry ingredients, including fat and fruit, in a cool place/fridge, tightly covered, overnight. This really does seem to enhance the flavour.
The recipe makes a big cake which I bake in a square tin, cut into quarters, keeping one quarter for current (ha ha!) consumption, slicing the others and freezing. I have tried halving the ingredients tio make a smaller cake but it just doesn't work. Most British fruit cakes contain what is known as mixed spice which I believe is similar to American pumpkin spice. I'm not keen on it, so just use cinnamon and powdered coriander (cilantro in the green plant). Kevin's conversational style, just every time I watch one of his videos compels me to share information
which I am not at all sure he or anyone else wishes to share!

Thank you for sharing the story about your grandmother. She reminds me of my grandmother. She also always served chicken. Her famous fried chicken (Fried in Crisco) but she served it with her own corn bread. My grandparents always had a bottle of buttermilk in the refrigerator because my grandfather liked to crumble his cornbread into it. Such fond memories

My grandmother was an excellent classical pianist. She lost her mother at a young age. Her father's brother and sisters stepped in and helped raise her and her sister. The aunts were wonderful cooks according to my mom. I don't think my grandma liked to cook, but she never complained about it. Every Sunday we would have dinner at her house. Dinner would be fried chicken or roast beef. There was always a lace table cloth, napkins, silver and napkins, but it never felt formal, just fun and family like.
When I stayed overnight she would have fried cornmeal mush that she had made the night before and chilled in a loaf pan. She would slice it the next morning, fry it in butter or bacon fat and serve it with syrup.

This morning @8:45 AM I started the buttermilk biscuit procedure. I figured by 9:45 AM there would be biscuits on my plate. I repeated the "NoFail" mantra. By @10AM Something, I ended up with a pan that had varying heights of them . By 10 18 three had mysteriously vanished... my miniature skyline version of NY was loosing buildings quickly due to alien abductions. Flour was everywhere and a tbsp of baking powder lay sacrificed to invisible gods of the sink rim. I'm hoping a fine dusting of flour is beneficial to the skin. Some of the batter decided it was cement and wouldn't come off the counter. I had to convince it otherwise; the battle lasted 5 minutes. Sometime earlier, when the butter and dry ingredients weren't turning into a crumble, I had resorted to prayer. This must have worked, and your grandmother's recipe came through with flying colors. Needless to say, you deserve much respect for your skills of presenting great recipes while keeping yourself & your workspace clean. These biscuits are amazingly good. Thank you for sharing them.

I loved the story of your Grandmother and her traditional methods. I use lard for many things including frying. I have learned that butter and lard are superior solid fats as they are not processed. I save rendered pork fat for pastry for meat pies. My version of Tortiere uses a boiled fresh pork shoulder that I shred, I season like you did with yours. I use the lard that forms on top of the cooled broth to contribute to the pastry. The broth is used for a gravey. My first mother in law was an Acadian lady from New Brunswick, Canada and this was her method. They always served this after midnight mass on Christmas eve.

Don't be afraid to use lard like your grandmother.
It's actually healthier than butter, with less saturated fat and no trans fat.
And it makes a lighter, flakier biscuit.

+My Mother used to make buttermilk biscuits using self rising flour and buttermilk. I have never seen a video about just the 2 ingredients. Turn on oven to 425 degrees. Heat 4 or 5 Tablespoons of bacon grease, or regular cooking oil to a biscuit pan put the pan with the bacon grease in it and get the pan hot. Mix the buttermilk and flour until you have a sticky dough, turn onto floured counter. Just pat it out and use a biscuit cutter and dip the bottom of the biscuit in the bacon grease to the hot pan, the more oil you use the crunchier the bottoms.

Wonderful, my grandmother used lard also, every other day. The last little bit of dough, she would roll into a ball, a pone, and bake with the biscuits. My grandfather would come in from his milk route, (where he collected 10 gallon milk cans and take to the local cheese factory) and have cold coffee and that pone biscuit. Thanks for the memories.

Beautiful video. I cut mine in squares so don’t have to do your last step and all biscuits look the same.

Hi 👋 I’m new to your channel … I’ve watched to many of your videos already …. I love all of them … specially the afternoon tea 🫖 videos and all the others with your recipes 👨‍🍳 ….. I’m planning having an afternoon tea 🫖 at home … ( I did the afternoon tea 🫖 on my last trip to London @ The Ritz Hotel 🏨 just a couple of months ago .. and I love 😍 the tradition of having an afternoon tea 🫖 ) … But I’ve some questions … I’m confused: are bisques and sconce the same 🤔 ?? … and I noticed that in this recipe you didn’t do the egg wash … is that the difference between them 🤔🤔 ?? … my other question: I don’t own a food processor … can make them by hand ✋ ?? … Hope you can help me .. I’ll appreciate a lot 🫶

Hi Norma - In the United States, biscuits are savory breads that you would serve with dinner. Scones are slightly sweet, and perfect for Afternoon Tea. To see all of my scone recipes (there are many!) watch my Afternoon Tea playlist here:

I may not ask personal questions but I wonder if you are an English native speaker because It's easy for me to understand your speech when it's usually very difficult with american speakers.

In the South, we have self-rising flour.
    So much simpler and easier.
    No butter...... shortening.
