    One of the things that just amazes me with Yngwie's playing that you touched on a bit. I can play fours and chunk up the neck, but listening to it played back it is very obvious that I am chunking up the neck. Yngwie's is so smooth that when I first heard it I felt the same way. I understood fours, but it never sounded like Yngwie was moving up one string. For example, Perilous Nation by Testament it sounds very obvious to me that Alex is playing fours up the neck on one string. Anyway, still amazes me after all these years.

      Ben Eller Thanks Ben! Everybody please go watch Ben's most recent upload for your weekly dose of neoclassical single-string engineering, and shaking-it-like-a-polaroid-picture early naughts hip hop pop culture vulturing. You can also get a of Ben playing a rather cool axe made from un-guitaristic materials, which is a luthiery choice that I would think we'd be seeing more of by now than we actually do.

FAR too many guitarists on, say, Facebook's * insert guitar page name here * do nothing but badmouth every other guitarist, whether they've been playing for 1 week or 137 years--even the wee lads and lasses catch no breaks... never a kind word, and DAMN sure nary a bit of advice. I saw Tony Mac Alpine ,at a clinic in the early 90s ,where he played the first album songs ,like "the Raven" I noticed Tony's version of the ascending fours was to go up and up until the last 2 strings ,where there would be a position shift from 12th position to 17th position

    I have to say, in all honesty, that Cracking the Code has helped me immensely in my playing. I hit a wall a while back that I haven't been able to get past, regardless of how many hours I spent practicing. It turns out that the issues addressed on this channel was EXACTLY the problem! I've been aware of the necessity of combining alternate and economy picking (fortunately I've had the pick angle and that stuff down since way back, at least), but not to what extent. When I started examining my difficulties, I discovered that the licks and patterns where I got stuck and couldn't evolve my speed and precision were those where I tried to switch strings after an incorrect down- or up-stroke (among other things). Amazing... The way you've put all this knowledge into a highly efficient and easy-to-understand system is really awesome. Thanks! :)

    The definition of genius - discovering something that seems blindingly obvious... but only after it's been discovered!
    I've been playing guitar for ~40 years and had got into a real rut. Could never work out why certain picking patterns were like butter, and others felt like pushing mud uphill with a pointed stick. It made playing the guitar really frustrating and put me off picking the damn thing up.
    So thanks Troy, your vids have been an enormous service to pickers like me everywhere.
    PS: I noticed in one vid you said you used to use the trailing edge of the pick, but moved to using the leading edge after seeing that was how Yngwie did it. Do you ever use the trailing edge now? Would you advise anyone using trailing edge to switch to leading edge?

    The 'volcano' unit is also used later in the solo in the ascending run just before the key change to c# minor. Also, there's a similar run at the very end of Overture 1383 (also on marching out) where the unit appears 3 times in the ascending lick before running up the neck in 4s. Its funny that when I started alternate picking in early 80s, I instinctively swept over the 2 strings like this when alternate picking would use an ascending-outer string cross, but I also angled the pick in both directions so did 2 up-strokes where alternate picking would use an descending-outer string cross. Later I considered it a mistake and it took a long time to unlearn it and replace it with strict alt. picking. However, now I'm going to revive it and use both styles.

    Troy, these videos are amazing and are helping me so much! Question: After 28 years, I have come to the conclusion that the Stylus pick teaches you to not use too much of the pick surface, but it does not solve all picking problems. What is your opinion of the Stylus pick? Did you ever try it? I wish had these videos all these years-I feel like I am getting out of the stone age of picking instruction by just watching your explanations of how everything works. :)

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  9 лет назад +2

      Joseph Bond We've addressed the "small motions" myth a number of times. A small movement is not automatically correct, and it's not any closer to correct either. It's just quieter. You'd never tell a drummer or pianist to use the smallest possible movements at all times, and you shouldn't tell your guitar player that either!

      There was the odd video knocking around on U-tube of this young kid in his bedroom who played it note for note although slightly rushed but still very impressive. You need to analyse where you go wrong and then set up a practice regime around that specific area so you can repeatedly play the same part. This will develop muscle memory in that specific part of your playing. It's all about muscle memory and so you need to start thinking about this whenever you practice. Many players don't know how to practice and then wonder why they put the hours in but they stay in the same place developmentally. Hope this helps:)

    Hey Troy whats the radius and fret size on your Mustang, and does radius screw with you at all? I notice you play short scale instruments in all the videos that I've watched of yours, does the string tension or the fret distance help your playing? Have you ever played a Rickenbacker 325? It has a 21" scale with as many frets. I have, well, Japanese-size hands, and sometimes have hand and wrist tension when doing wide interval stuff, but feel crowded on a shorty, most have low-ish frets, and I haven't found many friendly (to me) radii on short-scale production guitars.

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  9 лет назад

      Mike DeGroff Hi Mike! On a properly set up guitar, even an extreme radius (by guitar standards) like 7.25" on an old Strat or Mustang, is essentially negligible. The height difference between the strings will be small compared to the picking movements themselves. Re: scale length, it's also not something I specifically worry about. The three guitars I use most often are three different scale lengths, from 24" to 25.5".

    • @mikedegroff7766
      @mikedegroff7766 9 лет назад

      You don't run into problems doing wide bends on smaller radius necks? Even on some CS Vintage Fenders I've played, some notes on the high e above the 12th would choke out on bends over a whole step, and I always attributed it to the radius. Also the tiny frets allow more of my finger-meat rub the board, and combined with open-pored rosewood makes bending brutal. Maybe I should just learn to slide. One moar ting... Do you plan on making a more in depth series with the Magnet on hybrid picking techniques, similar to Tom Quayle and Marshall Harrison?

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  9 лет назад

      Mike DeGroff Hi Mike. I haven't really run into the bending issue though I'm generally familiar with the complaint so I'm sure it's a thing. Re: hybrid picking, the Marshall Harrison interview has a good deal of this, and it's all tabbed out in the download pack.

    Troy Grady --- do you no longer reply to these things ? Granted i came her a year ago and my playings improved greatly but i am wondering about the time you spent building speed even the u discovered the correct picking --- did u spend time again with the metronome given that the pick may have been new even to u... ?
    Im a late comer here ... Plz if ya get a moment

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  7 лет назад +1

      +Franky Murphy Nope I've never used a metronome. I'm not really above average fast, and my speed has not changed much since I was a teenager. Accuracy is what has changed, due to learning the hand movements necessary to switch strings cleanly. Every ten years I learn something new about accuracy that takes my playing to a whole other level. It can happen!

  • @MostLikelyMortal

    Do you find having your guitar strap so short helps you with this kind of playing? I ask because I find standing up and trying to play these segments considerably more difficult, or at least, different than playing them sitting down. I've thought it was something to do with the length of my strap changing the angle to which my hands fret and strum the notes, but I see many professional guitarists that have their guitars midsection level or lower. Thoughts?

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  9 лет назад

      MostLikelyMortal Not for the picking hand, no. In fact, super low Ramones-style (or Paul Gilbert-style, for that matter) guitar strap lengths can be comfortable for picking because that's where your hand naturally rests anyway, at belt / pocket height. Fretting hand is where the pain from low straps arises for me. Any time I have to bend my fretting wrist for extended periods it's dangerous and I steer clear.

    • @severalpaperclips
      @severalpaperclips 9 лет назад

      MostLikelyMortal It may not matter for the picking hand, but wearing the guitar low is definitely detrimental to the ergonomics of the fretting hand. I think since a big part of the challenge is building coordination between the two hands, anything that interferes with the left hand will slow down your progress. Lots of popular guitar players wear them low because they've grown to think it looks cool, and they may be right. But if you look at rock bands from before mid-60s or modern jazz players, most of them have their guitars up high. I think the "low" guitar came about as part of 60s rock's stylistic rebellion against the perceived "up tight" norms of earlier generations.

    • @Forzafurioso
      @Forzafurioso 8 лет назад

      +Troy Grady I try to find the middle ground standing up. Having the guitar too high makes my right shoulder tens, too low and I can't use stuff like pentatonic and diminished string skipping properly.

    Have you heard that Malmsteen is selling art now? It's actually pretty nice looking. Don't know what they cost, probably a lot. yngwiemalmsteenart.com is the site. About this video, good player. I wonder if people tell hem he should do the vocals in a Rush tribute band, if he can sing. He could do Lee's vocals while playing Lifeson's guitar stuff. Somebody else could play bass.

    Shane, I don't think think anyone can break down Marty's picking technique.

      sammy reynolds I don't think Marty Friedman's technique is as strange as people make it out to be. He basically uses a forearm rotation mechanic with a gypsy style wrist, but with the "break" in the wrist positioned flatter against the guitar body than you usually see from gypsy jazz players. Extreme example of downward pick slanting. Beast of a player, clearly. Check out the series of videos he did with Guitar World's youtube channel in summer/fall 2014. I think his melodic choices are even more interesting than his technique.

      severalpaperclips great videos for sure. I remember the one he did when talked about arpeggios and sweeping. When basically said sweeping was for showing off and nothing else, it pissed people off.

    The lick at :24 is incorrect and not the way Yngwie plays it. I believe he played it all on the E string starting at fret 8 after the Am arp. It is easier to play that way. Other than that, great video.

    Just wondering why Yngwie never played the solo live as the original on the mtv video? The live in japan was different however just as thrilling and spectacular but very different apart from the twin harpsichord/guitar baroque sequence at the beginning. I know many guitar players do it different live but I usually put this down to the fact they lack the skills to nail it live what they mustered up in a studio performance due to the fact you can keep recording until you get the best take, but in Yngwies case, he never lacked the skill to play the original version.

      Mickeyislowd He improvises every single time, the one recorded is just another take.

    • @MICKEYISLOWD
      @MICKEYISLOWD 6 лет назад

      I doubt that the studio versions are add-libs. There is definitely worked out a feel to the original from Marching Out. I know his live takes are 'off the cuff' so to speak but when Yngwie was questioned and slightly criticized about this he replied he didn't want to play the same solos over again as this is boring to him. The criticism was that the audience want to hear as per original or like how say Marty Friedman played Megadeth solos perfectly note for note. I tend to agree with the very well known Rising Force stuff and more so for Far Beyond The Sun which he barely plays any of the the original parts anymore...

    he's talking way too fast , and his demonstrations are also brief ,making things sound over complicated , maybe he's presuming you can play it all ready , but I found that lesson frustratingly over complex for something that doesn't need to be over complicated ,

      Nah, it just takes lots and lots of practice before you can come close.
      Remember, this is Yngwie were talking about. There's no lesson to turn you into YJM. In fact, there's only one!
      Work on your picking. If this stuff is unfamiliar, changing your picking mechanics must take place first. You cannot do this stuff without those habits, period. I've been building bad habits for many years. It took a couple months of hours a day. I still have my bad habits but those are my style and at high speed, they now disappear.
      Downward and alternate pick slanting... Bread and butter!
      Do your scales, start with his tutorials and know the material before moving to the next and be patient. You can't help but improve.

      Jon Mallary that sounds like me I had to change my picking mechanics I have so many bad happits and sloppy technique , one thing I found that helps is starting certain alternate pucking licks on an upstroke , that helps with some of the tricky cross string and inside out picking stuff on certain things . ,
      And thank you for the advice , cheers mate.

    This guy, playing the cheese version of real players, the forced technique, underdeveloped right hand, just goes to show you with enough repetition even the most novice clowns get to pretend to be some kind of master picker, I remember these guys in Guitar Solo Clinics I did in LPW at GIT back in th late 1980's
