Even if you have a blanket box, moths can still get in there. Buy a huge space bag to fit inside and lay all your cleaned, dry blankets and winter clothing inside that. Before you close that up (DON'T suck all the air out - I find the total lack of air makes the contents smell stale after a few months) buy a bag of silica gel cat litter and a batch of empty tea-bags/ sachets from E-bay or Temu, etc and fill them with the cat litter (massively cheaper than buying those tiny, insignificant desiccant packets). One or two large ones of those placed inside the space bag will absorb any residual moisture (don't rely on them to dry things off - make sure everything is as dry as possible before you put them in) and everything will be fresh when you take them out next year. Just push most of the air out, but some air inside is fine. One bag of cat litter will make hundreds of sachets of all sizes for different things. Once the silica has gone yellow, pour it into the bin and re-fill with fresh silica. If it's still white, you can keep using it. You can also use different sizes of freezer bags for smaller items. This works whether you want to protect things from moisture, dust or moths. You can also mix lavender with the silica gel or make separate sachets (or buy Vivi's). I'm a big fan of plastic boxes with tight lids, freezer bags of all sizes, silica gel cat litter and empty teabags. They've been keeping my stuff secure for years. Nothing nicer than tidily-closed closet doors, behind which you know is a pile of boxes of highly-organised items vouched safe from critters (unless you have the really destructive kind and then you have to pull out the big g.ns). xx
Hi Vivi. Great reminders. I did a video on the same subject at the beginning of September. Don't ask me why it was on my mind because to this day we are still having triple digit weather. 🥵 One time my parents had an infestation of moths and I had a bunch of lavender bushes at my house. I just made several bouquets and put them in every room and closet. It worked so incredibly well. Another reason for your subscribers to buy your lovely lavender sachets. 😁👍

Listening & agreeing… I am always cold and winter is just hard. Farmwork brrr and we heat with wood and small heaters, so there are rooms we don’t heat…. but I too try to focus on what I like and what I find sweet or charming. We keep a candle on our coffee table - just one - but sometimes lighting it feels like a treat & “atmosphere” …. and cuddling under warm woolly blankets on the sofa with my heating pad as my spot is next to the cooler window area so 😂😂 needs must. But it is cozy too. But winters are long here & I do get tired of the slippery ice. Sooo uff. “Both and” as they said here, good & “bad”. Altho they say here there is no bad weather, just bad clothes… so perhaps there is something there. Another reason to keep knitting 😂.
It would be a good idea to check your boiler pressure before you bleed your radiators. If you don't know how to do that, when you get your boiler serviced for the winter ask the plumber to show you how to check the pressure and bleed radiators. It's not difficult but it's much easier if someone shows you.
Hearing you talk about boilers, radiators, conkers, and water bottles is just as foreign as if I’d talk about heat pumps, fried okra, June bugs, and cornbread. But still I listen! Maybe you can do a video of all of the free holiday stuff you find to do this year.
Hello Vivi, like you I'm a summer girl and also a night owl... born in January but summer is my time of year. I get together with my family and we play cards. We split the dinners every week we take turns so the cost is less and so is the cooking. I also pick a book or movie that I know is emotional and allow myself a good cry/balling my eyes out. That way when it's out of my system it was more about the book/movie and not about the weather/season. Like you said there are things we can do to make it easier on our minds and bodies. It's only a few months we can do this girlfriend. Much Love from across the Pond 💞
I have loads of cups of hot home made soup in cold weather. Soup seems to warm me more than a hot drink.Defiantly love my water bottle , day or night. I also fill my water bottle and wrap my nightie around it and put it in my bed about an hour before I go to bed. I then reheat the water and take it to bed with me. In really cold weather I may even have two water bottles which I use as one for my feet and one to cuddle in bed. I also have a fleece bed jacket to wear in bed on really cold nights.
@@WhatVivididnext wow hope you share your new soup ideas. I love soup and would love to try. A few of your soups have become my go to’s I try other people ideas and if I like them I write out the recipes and add them to my folder.
The transition from summer to autumn can be a very difficult one, especially, for many, the shortening days. So glad to have your reflections on this, and your wisdom. And of course spring and summer will come again. And by then you'll be in your new place, and building your new life. Hopefully, it'll be somewhere where the light can flood in, and you'll be able to more easily get outside to feel the warmth on your face, potter in a little garden, and maybe hang some washing to dry (one of life's great pleasures!) 🙏🌻😎
Gosh, I do remember that year you struggled with the loss of summer and then how the next year you were determined to practice hygge principles and be victorious over the winter blues.
I’m a fall/winter girl… I do enjoy the spring, but the summers are so incredibly hot where I’m at in the western US… Even now as we get close to October we’ve still got 100°F days
All good advice! I will be checking my boiler shortly, thanks for the reminder. I haven't tried conkers as a moth deterrent but I'll be out collecting them to use as a free laundry detergent anyway, so worth a try! I've always struggled with the winter so I retreat into the warmest corner of my home with blankets galore and put on my cheap SAD lamp to give me extra light to read by. Also, chocolate! 😁
I have to get my winter squash harvest in tomorrow, before the big drop happens here in the rural South East. I have a bumper crop of Crown Prince, at least 15, approx 10 Urchi kuri and 4 magnificent musquee de provence! Visiting family are going to do well out of pumpkin patch this year 🤗. I agree, I think it's my favourite harvest.
I am determined to embrace the Winter season this year and focus on the elements I enjoy. Reading, crafting, good TV and spending time with family and friends. The singing group I belong to has already been booked for some carol concerts so that will be fun to do as well.
Frockage.... is that a word? You made me laugh. I just watched a video made by Sean in 2014 of you and he celebrating Christmas at the allotment. So fun ❤. You looked so happy.
I am with you there- winter to me in Canada represents loss. Loss of heat, my beautiful vegetable and flower gardens and for a person with arthritis it means a loss of mobility due to the weight of the winter coats and boots and ice locking me indoors for months. I cannot see an upside. 😢
Question, Vivi, if I dare ask….do you know if your agent will insist a certain temperature in the flat for showings? I truly expect transactions will have begun well before that issue arises. I hope autumn/winter will be extra special for you this year. Time to explore, read and maybe ✍️ write? Oh, and pack up!❤️
Fair enough. I go in for jigsaw puzzles, my DVD collection and computer games rather than broadcast TV. I prefer unabridged audiobooks rather than sitting reading. Our library has a pretty good online offer for ebooks and audiobooks. So, if yours does that, you don’t have to travel there. Each to their own.
I used to love winter and it was my favorite because I liked the cold. I have horrific migraines and the cold really helps them feel better. However when I was 22 I got rheumatoid arthritis that got really bad very quickly. Since 10:27 then the cold makes my joints hurt so bad so now I don’t like winter as much. I try to focus on the tings I like about it. Winter is a great crafting time for me because I don’t have as much going on in the garden so I have more time to make things.
Timely advice Vivi, it vertainly does seem as if Autumn has hit with a vengeance, The torrential rain just makes it seem much colder, and having to have lamps on so early definitely does not fill me with joy. I don't particularly dislike the colder months (despite also being a summer baby) but much prefer a gradual "cooling off" period, instead of this sudden plunge into it. My hottie is also several years old, but I never fill it with boiling water and usually end up kicking it out of bed once I've warmed up. I prefer sheet and blankets on my bed rather than a duvet so always use cedar blocks to store with my blankets and have never had a moth problem. My boiler man sends me a reminder every March so I always have that done then, and I've already checked my radiators. I keep my radiator key on top of the electric switch for the boiler so I'm not scrabbling round looking for it. I always feel very grown up when I bleed them😃. Apart from my "to be read" bookshelf , which never seems to go down, I also make a note of any recommendations for films/series to watch on catch up tv. So I feel set for Winter now - just not yet please weather gods!
Thanks, Vivi. Need to find my rad key. It's somewhere safe...... 😅. Hot water bottles and bottles are all ready for use. Just need to put the gardening furniture away and the washing line 😢. I don't like winter....... my arthritis tells me of its discontent 😂😂😂😂
@@WhatVivididnext some say it's a myth but it works for me and apparently it's the saponin content that repels them. I also have tried carbolic soap which also works so it makes sense to me.
It is definitely conker season right now! I’m still a big kid and if I see new shiny conkers on the floor I have to pick up a couple just to feel the smooth surface then I find them in my coat pocket days later! Who can find the oldest hot water bottle still in use?
I possibly have the oldest hot water bottle - it is a stoneware Victorian one!! I bought it specifically because it won't perish and has a lid on the top ( which is currently watertight but easier to make leakproof as it is on the top). 😂
@@lynnoorman2144 my Mum grew up with a brick heated in the oven (at the side of the fire) then wrapped in a towel but I love the stone ones that you fill with water. I must admit it isn’t quite so good for cuddling but great for feet.

I love winter and can’t stand the heat of summer. Unfortunately, summer hasn’t let go of us here in Denver. 91 degrees today and a few more 90s in the forecast for the next week. Ugh. I’m longing for sweater weather.
Wearing all the clothes is what gets me down , I actually hate it , low light not good ... Don't watch TV so that's out , maybe will just walk and walk like forest gump for a few months and with all the layers get strong for spring😁
I am in Australia, but family from London. I was diagnosed with SAD at 24. No matter how much sunshine I get here or how hard I try, it hits me very hard every winter and once it hits me, I find it very hard to feel up to leaving the house. As soon as the weather changes so does my mood and I am back to my usual happy, bubbly self. I hate it! My sister sent me a SAD light from the UK as they are not a thing here and that has helped a bit. I have made a list out of your suggestions. Thanks :) Also, my hot water bottle was 2012 lol. I wonder if others from the UK get SAD in warmer countries too? IDK. I am going to the UK next year in winter. It will be interesting to see how I cope with it there, when there is a lot of Christmas things going on and lovely snow which we dont get here!
Getting ready for autumn & winter here too! There is a hurricane going to hit Florida tonite & we will get winds & rains from it here in Tennesse USA. I moved flower pots, bench, flags to shed & got anything that might blow away put up. Got my fall pumpkin tablecloth I made years ago on table & decor out. Put up my colorful floral summer tablecoth after washing it. I have been looking up fall recipes. Love soups year round actually. Looking through my books for fallish books. Started making Christmas gifts for my extended family. Never get bored! Always something to do! Now, I need to check my winter wardrobe. I have I may need to get rid of some summer things as I switch them. ❤😅
I just want to hug you Miss Vivi!!! I love our chats!!!! Winter is coming...for sure!!!! Wishing you all the best!!!! Lots of love, hugs and milk chocolate!!!!
We use them to warm the bed and keep our toes warm. We cuddle them while watching tv. With energy prices as they are in the UK we follow the advice to heat the human(and cat) not the home. I even have a special one under my desk for my feet😁
I really don't know how people from Scandinavia, Norway and the Northern climes manage with the long Winter days and nights..I suppose that's what the hygge theme is all about... self care and cosiness in the dark days... since I retired I tend to hibernate, to an extent... I don't like driving in the dark so don't get out as much. My Winter films are the Bridget Jones Trilogy.... settee , cosy blankie and hot coffee and a film.... I just don't do reality TV. and all these strictly .bake off etc In my opinion, have been done to the death....boring..boring boring.... You probably know this, but in Germany it's traditional to watch a Freddie Frinton film at New year... 'Dinner for one' I had never heard of it until last year.... hilarious... proper old fashioned humour. 😂
Gosh, I don't know how the Scandies cope either.....perhaps it makes a difference if you're born there and become accustomed to it from birth? They've certainly got the right ideas with hygge! 😊

@@WhatVivididnext the rain and the cold also doesn’t help with my arthritic joint. Like you as an ex nurse who started before any moving and handling equipment was available arthritic joint are a legacy of my years of nursing most of which was sent on a male geriatric ward.
Hear, hear. I don't know how I managed without thermals now. 😉
It would be a good idea to check your boiler pressure before you bleed your radiators. If you don't know how to do that, when you get your boiler serviced for the winter ask the plumber to show you how to check the pressure and bleed radiators. It's not difficult but it's much easier if someone shows you.
Wonderful video Vivi 😀
It's a good idea to have eavestroughs/gutters cleaned before winter.
Definitely! 😊
It’s wet and cold in North West Wales. I’ve had a couple of hot water bottles and this afternoon I have lit the wood burner for the first time .
All this rain has certainly made the air feel chillier.
Wood burners are like a little temple....staring at the flames calms the soul ❤ I don't have one so I have deep envy of ownership 😊
Hearing you talk about boilers, radiators, conkers, and water bottles is just as foreign as if I’d talk about heat pumps, fried okra, June bugs, and cornbread. But still I listen! Maybe you can do a video of all of the free holiday stuff you find to do this year.
Haha....cheers lovely..yes.
Yes we can! Hahaha, I also do the weepy movie thing sometimes.....can't be a good sob! 😉
Hi vivi, Love your videos your so refreshing to listen to. Take care ❤️
Thank you. 😊
So enjoyed the chat!!
Thank you. 😁
Yay for the double hotty bots! I agree re the soup and I'm looking forward to experimenting with some new ones this winter.
@@WhatVivididnext wow hope you share your new soup ideas. I love soup and would love to try. A few of your soups have become my go to’s I try other people ideas and if I like them I write out the recipes and add them to my folder.
Gosh! That's what I used to do with the kid's pyjamas.
That's what I used to do with the kid's pyjamas.
Yay, three cheers to that! 😊
Gosh, I do remember that year you struggled with the loss of summer and then how the next year you were determined to practice hygge principles and be victorious over the winter blues.
It does seem to help! 😊
I’m a fall/winter girl… I do enjoy the spring, but the summers are so incredibly hot where I’m at in the western US… Even now as we get close to October we’ve still got 100°F days
😯
Vivi thank you, I had completely forgot about my boiler service - I paused you and booked it 👏❤
Yay, fantastic! My work here is done. 😉
Thanks, Vivi, for a great, cosy upload.
Cheers lovely. 😊
I remember Samuel West in Hornblower: Frogs and Lobsters. Really good actor. But with Timothy West and Prunella Scales as parents, well.
👍❤️🙏finally we are getting rain the past couple days from the hurricane in FL
All good advice! I will be checking my boiler shortly, thanks for the reminder.
I haven't tried conkers as a moth deterrent but I'll be out collecting them to use as a free laundry detergent anyway, so worth a try!
I've always struggled with the winter so I retreat into the warmest corner of my home with blankets galore and put on my cheap SAD lamp to give me extra light to read by. Also, chocolate! 😁
Ahhh, yes, chocolate goes a long way to help. 😉
Ooooh, wonderful....enjoy every morsel. I hope the weather treats you kindly for harvesting.....
@WhatVivididnext I got up early and took advantage of a break in the monsoon rain. I don't think I was spotted in my jammies and wellies!!
@@magpie1492 Hahaha....I'm sure that even if you were spotted you would have made someone smile! 😁
Another fab video Vivi, stay warm , enjoy that hot chocolate 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you lovely, you too. 😊
Thinks to look forward to in winter... soup. I'm making minestrone tomorrow, but it's really still too hot to enjoy it.
Mmmmm...yes, soup season! Love it. 😊
@@WhatVivididnext tis the season agree🇨🇦🐝
I am determined to embrace the Winter season this year and focus on the elements I enjoy. Reading, crafting, good TV and spending time with family and friends. The singing group I belong to has already been booked for some carol concerts so that will be fun to do as well.
I think group singing is so uplifting (proven so by research too). Happy carolling when the time comes. 😊
Frockage.... is that a word? You made me laugh. I just watched a video made by Sean in 2014 of you and he celebrating Christmas at the allotment. So fun ❤. You looked so happy.
Hahah...it is a word now. 😉
I am with you there- winter to me in Canada represents loss. Loss of heat, my beautiful vegetable and flower gardens and for a person with arthritis it means a loss of mobility due to the weight of the winter coats and boots and ice locking me indoors for months. I cannot see an upside. 😢
Ach, that sounds tough on you. 😢
Oh Vivi, I LOVE Bake Off SO MUCH!!!! Can’t wait for the next season!!!!!
I think it has just started! Enjoy! 😁
lovely
Question, Vivi, if I dare ask….do you know if your agent will insist a certain temperature in the flat for showings? I truly expect transactions will have begun well before that issue arises. I hope autumn/winter will be extra special for you this year. Time to explore, read and maybe ✍️ write? Oh, and pack up!❤️
Hahah, yes, there will be plenty to do! 😊 As for the temperature for showings it's not cold during the daytime yet so not an issue. 😊
@@WhatVivididnext 👍👍
Fair enough. I go in for jigsaw puzzles, my DVD collection and computer games rather than broadcast TV. I prefer unabridged audiobooks rather than sitting reading. Our library has a pretty good online offer for ebooks and audiobooks. So, if yours does that, you don’t have to travel there. Each to their own.
I love strictly come dancing call the midwife all creatures great and small ❤❤❤
❤️
I used to love winter and it was my favorite because I liked the cold. I have horrific migraines and the cold really helps them feel better. However when I was 22 I got rheumatoid arthritis that got really bad very quickly. Since 10:27 then the cold makes my joints hurt so bad so now I don’t like winter as much. I try to focus on the tings I like about it. Winter is a great crafting time for me because I don’t have as much going on in the garden so I have more time to make things.
Hurrah for crafts to distract us.....from both the cold and pain! ❤️
Yay for being all set....enjoy the hygge season. 😊
It’s been a cold one snuggle up ❤
Thanks, Vivi. Need to find my rad key. It's somewhere safe...... 😅.
Hot water bottles and bottles are all ready for use.
Just need to put the gardening furniture away and the washing line 😢.
I don't like winter....... my arthritis tells me of its discontent 😂😂😂😂
Ugh yes, arthritis and winter are not good bedfellows.......hurrah for hotty bots, blankets and cosy distractions. 😊
I can confirm that conkers put in the corner of a window sill deter spiders.
How amazing....I wonder what it is they give off? 😊
@@WhatVivididnext some say it's a myth but it works for me and apparently it's the saponin content that repels them. I also have tried carbolic soap which also works so it makes sense to me.
Winter is a time for rest and reflection…use it wisely.
Hear, hear. 😊
It is definitely conker season right now! I’m still a big kid and if I see new shiny conkers on the floor I have to pick up a couple just to feel the smooth surface then I find them in my coat pocket days later!
Who can find the oldest hot water bottle still in use?
Yes! Me too......fancy a game? 😉
Are we baking them first?
@@poolfield2 Hahaha....and a pre-soak in vinegar......makes 'em really hard. 😉
I also watched the original All Creatures - loved it ( even brought the theme tune on 45 record lol. didn't think it could be bettered but oh, the new one is just perfect. Thanks Vivi :0)
Hear, hear. 😊
I loved it too and watched the series over and over! I do love the new one, too.
I love winter and can’t stand the heat of summer. Unfortunately, summer hasn’t let go of us here in Denver. 91 degrees today and a few more 90s in the forecast for the next week. Ugh. I’m longing for sweater weather.
❤❤❤
What’s a conker?
It's the seed of a Horse Chestnut tree. 😊
Wearing all the clothes is what gets me down , I actually hate it , low light not good ... Don't watch TV so that's out , maybe will just walk and walk like forest gump for a few months and with all the layers get strong for spring😁
I'm not a fan of all the clothes/layers either....ach....nowt to do but keep walking. 😉
I'm glad to hear the lamp has helped a bit.....it can be such a tough time to get through. I hear you lovely.
@@WhatVivididnext Thank you :)
Love the cake & cocoa gathering idea
Me too. 😊
Are “Conkers” horse chestnuts? We Americans aren’t familiar with that term!
Yes they are. 😊
Yes......and we play a game with them too...simply called 'conkers'. 😊
Ive had heating on this summer .
😯
It's been sooo cold in many parts of the country this year and the rain 😮 makes everything feel glum.
If you have an Iceland or poundland, can I recommend Mokate hot chocolate £1 for 10 drinks .
Sadly I don't....but thank you for sharing as someone else may see this and think 'yay'. 😊
I guess you will have to keep the place warm for buyers to feel comfortable during viewing.

Hi Vivi, I get depressed in summer here in Australia, not looking forward to it. ❤
Aww, hugs to you lovely.
I hope you all get through the hurricane without too much damage.....and enjoy your autumn decorating. 😊
Lovely, lovely video chatting 🏞️

I just want to hug you Miss Vivi!!! I love our chats!!!! Winter is coming...for sure!!!! Wishing you all the best!!!! Lots of love, hugs and milk chocolate!!!!
Awww, thank you lovely....and hugs back to you. 😊

I didn't realize that people still used hot water bottles. I remember my grandmother had one. What do you use it for? Sending love from Alaska!
To keep warm
Ditto olgyone. 😉
Keeping the tootsies warm in bed....
Vivi you shouldn’t use the old hot water bottle don’t take a chance ,when I was in the burns unit in hospital I was talking to a Chaplin in hospital and she told me that a woman scaled herself with a hot water bottle don’t gamble 🌺
Oh how awful......don't worry, I'm only using the new one now. Thank you lovely.
I think the new all creatures is better than the original
Me too! 😊
I sleep better in winter
🤣🌲❄
I like the winter now bc it’s say the only season here where I don’t hear gas powered noisy leaf blowers and lawn blowers. I enjoy the quiet.❤
Ugh, horrid things! Enjoy that quiet when it comes. 😊
Why dont you seek therapy or mental helth help❤❤❤i receve all of these
Because I'm able to work through it on my own.
Yeah, let’s go to the national gallery to look at the VanGough’s - oh we can’t, because they’re covered in soup, again - I think we all have to work on climate change, but throwing soup isn’t the answer.
I hope you do the trip down into London
Maybe follow Vivi's example and try to take the positives from this beautiful, uplifting vlog?
They do more damage to the actual cause of trying to stop climate change .... idiots....
