Mr. Collins you are a true blessing. I am longtime windows user. I tried to update to windows 10 back in 2015-16 it was a nightmare it crashed my windows machine. The repairman put windows 7 home premium back on my machine, and it has been stable, but now with the loss of support for windows 7. I am ready to learn Linux & hopefully stay with it for years & drop my windows eventually. Thanks for your very professional, knowledgeable videos. No words to express how they have help with this decision. I believe Linux Mint will be my first attempt at Linux operating system. Bless you for what you are doing to help this community.

Systemback is brilliant backup software that not only lets you easily create, organise, restore from and manage backups, but it also lets you create ISO images from a backup so you can create a Live USB of your computer to take with you anywhere. Doesn't sound like something of interest for most, however you'd be surprised how often I needed to do a quick job on the fly and I didn't bring my laptop with me, so I grabbed the first available PC and had my exact workstation up in under a minute, all from a cheap USB stick.
Also, Davinci Resolve is an industry standard video editor that offers a free version for Linux. It's main focus is on colour grading, however with editing and its toolset it performs no worse than Premiere or Final Cut. It may be a slight pain to get running, but its a brilliant cross-platform video editor.

    For office: WPS Office
It doesn't even want to hide it's a 1:1 clone of MS Office but it does its job REALLY good!
Try making a chart under LibreOffice and your day will be ruined. Under WPS its as good as the MS thing.
Also Office 2013 now seems to be running quite good under Wine 2.0.
A lot of people who don't want to switch to Linux is because they don't have a good office sofware.
And nye, LibreOffice is okay but not intuitive. Try to convince a long time MS office user. Good luck, you will need it.

in Libre Office they are bugs that I face quite frequenly (in the styles in LO draw) but charts works without problems since day 1 and I was a user of Open Office before the fork to Libre Office
and WPS office is more or less free, not open source, and the native file format is proprietary.

libre office can track changes -> menu/file/property/security/track changes
I have wps here on 250 pc and I'm getting rid of it.
      - it is *not* open source, it belongs to a chinese company so they have to make money
      - During a time you could not print anything without "wps wps wps wps wps" written in the back ground
      - now they push add and you have to pay to get rid of it
      - and this is pure speculation but I really would like to see their code to understand how they got a working office suite so fast from nowhere and that behave exatly the same way as libreoffice on a problematic xls file...
my choice is that if I have to put energy and time in a change, it must make a difference, libre office is open source, license free and the file format is also open.
Moving from MSoffice to WPS is like choosing betwen the plague and cholera, I would choose MS, at least it produces files formats that can be read by other office suties, wps has it own format.

Kdenlive would be a great choice for video editing, if there wasn't the issue with stability lately. I recommend everyone to take a serious look at Shotcut. I moved on to this one after Kdenlive started to make serious problems (like not finishing rendering tasks at 99% with GPU enabled, slow video playback with GPU disabled, UI/icon issues and sudden crashes). In terms of UI/layout shotcut is quite similar to kdenlive, but everything works including GPU acceleration and GPU accelerated encoding in h.264 baseline. Also shotcut supportshtml/JavaScript for additional effects, next to many other (more basic) built-in filters and effects. I warmly recommend shotcut over kdenlive to all users that need to get their work done reliably. I will continue keeping an eye on kdenlive and hope the team will be able to resolve the issues soon.

Sadly, none of these work for serious video editors or professionals. That's one of the main reasons I've stuck with Windows on my main desktop, I would need something as user-friendly, intuitive, feature-filled, and stable as Premiere Pro. Unfortunately, Linux doesn't have an editor like that.

I found it slightly amusing that the creator of a video about Linux tools didn't know how to exit vim. I suppose it's a good sign though--more non-programmers are being drawn to Linux, making it more mainstream. I like that.

The standard "gedit" isn't bad in Cinnamon but I have settled on "Geany" for text editing. For the torrents I usually
use "Deluge" which has worked good over the years. My biggest decision to stay with LMDE Cinnamon was the
filemanager which is "Nemo". The "Thunar" filemanager in the XFCE Distros is another good one. I really don't
have anything good to say about the "Nautilus" filemanager used in the Gnome 3 desktops. I think it was a bad
    selection. Thanks for the suggestions.

I know this is an older video but I did find it useful as I'm getting (back) into Linux now.
Can I ask what desktop of Linux Mint did you use here?
I'm currently using Linux Mint 20.1 with the Cinnamon desktop. I have A REALLY hard time to customize the start/main menu. I can't hardly add items, I can't seem to move items around between submenu's or even create new submenu's to put apps in... 🤔😱
Why is the menu so hard to manipulate (for sure compared to Windows)? I even tried Mate, but that didn't really make it easier.
Are things easier if using KDE? Or another?

    • @EzeeLinux
      @EzeeLinux  3 года назад +1

I think this was LM 17.3... There is a more advanced menu editor available by right clicking on the menu icon, choosing configure and the opening the 'Menu tab.... You'll see it toward the bottom of the page. Linux menus work the same no matter what desktop, by the way. If you figure out how to edit and manipulate it on one, it pretty much works the same for all.

    • @erdejo01
      @erdejo01 3 года назад

@@EzeeLinux yeah, that's the one I've been trying to use... Maybe it's my desire to make the menu work like I have it in Windows. There I have it several layers deep like you can do it on Windows, prior to like 7 or 8... And you can just drag and drop things, including submenu's/folders and program items back and forth. That doesn't seem to be doable in Linux...
I may have to adopt another way of working.

I still have a Windows 10 computer ....I don't care about all of my Adobe and Microsoft software I invested in for my college studies ... don't use any of them anymore. However, I have several Digital Audio Workstation programs (digital recording) that I really do need and there is not a good enough Linux alternative for those.

LibreOffice aren't superbly compatible with Microsoft Office and sometimes It lacks a some options of Microsoft Office programs. Gnumeric is much better for spreadsheet than LO Calc and MS Excel. Abiword is a little buggy in many distros. For full compatibility with MS Office you need WPS Office and OnlyOffice.

I feel the same too as sometimes people change applications for the sake of changing but in reality sometimes it does the same thing as the old school application therefore in option sometimes old school is just best to keep but then again that could be because I am getting older so I tend to not like change as much as before LOL :)

It's sad that most of the applications work awful in VirtualBox to use and using it as main machine on MacBook, it consumes the battery life about 2-3 hours. Mostly it's because of graphic issues that Vbox offers but I like to use Firefox, even sync my settings on it(even tho I used chrome since 3-4 years and currently using Safari...too confusing). I don't use torrent at all(quitted to download crack apps etc.) so transmission is the app that I used very rare. I think Geary is a good tool for emails, also evolution. Keep going

One thing: Since your biggest gripe with Windows is their included EULA clauses where they actually state they have full access to everything you have on your machine. Have you looked at Google Chome's EULA? It's not really different at all. They also make you accept that agreement and have all rights to everything you create. Anything you do in Chrome Google has the right to take ownership of and sell to other companies.
Just what that means in practise is a bit vague, but it could be construed that even your content created here is not yours at all, even if it wasn't already placed onto a google server through the youtube apps. Food for thought, not saying Chrome is bad, just saying horses for courses.
