    Thank you for another great video!
    I installed Serena myself yesterday and it seems to be running very well, better in fact than Rebecca did, but I burned an image to DVD and installed from that. It too longer but it also gives me the opportunity to get rid of a lot of junk I had acquired along the way.
    In general, if you can spare the time, it's good to renew your system every six months to a year; as ever, back-ups are your best friend!

    Hi Joe, thx for all these nice videos. I started using Linux since begin 2016 on an 10 year old Dell laptop. At that time I was looking to replace my win xp by something else. As I was not sure if Win 10 would work on this old laptop, the security issues with Win10, the high cost and the spyware Win10 is using now, etc....I was looking for a low cost alternative. In the end I installed Mint 17.3 and I like it. I tried also other distros, but in the end, Mint was my choice as it was the less complicated to install and felled the most easy to learn an to use (was a windows user both professionally and privately for many, many years).
    From the beginning, I was using mainly your videos to learn the commands in Linux an to find my way around in Linux Mint with and without the GUI. So thank you for the nice videos.
    If possible, I would like to learn about Systemd and services and also how to update software that was installed via a ppa.
    Keep up the good work and learn noobies, like myself , to use Linux and get away from MS. Knowing the Linux basics, already helped me in my profesional live in a few occasions. Thx

    Joe. I am like everyone who have their favorite programs. I have tried Banshee, Clementine, Rhythmbox and some others. I have been using Guayadeque since its early .035.. days and believe it be (my personal opinion of course) the best. When Linuxmint 18 came out, Anonbeat was working on an updated version of Guayadeque and it was not available at that time. For me, that was a show stopper to the linuxmint upgrade. I stayed at 17.3. However, Anonbeat updated Guayadeque to its current level of 0.45. Its only drawback is it doesn't have changeable skins. Not a biggie for me as I like all the other features. If you so choose, give it a try. I believe it is now available in LM18.1 via synaptic package manager. I used the PPA to do the download. I enjoy your videos. Coming to you from the Peninsula.. Jim

    Hi Joe,
    May I ask, have you done a Linux Mint review, running from an external drive?
    My Laptop is a 60 gig internal drive and I have a 500 gig external drive (I use it for backup). I wish it was the other way around!
    Regards
    Cyjo

    • @EzeeLinux

      I don't advocate running an OS from an external drive. Hard drives, spinning or solid state, your choice, are dirt cheap these days... Get a bigger drive and put it in the laptop. :)

    The network manager bug, like you mentioned, seems to be fixed in 18.1, but the main bug in 18 was the fact that after using suspend (to ram) upon return you then lost all the text in the panel and menu - that bug unfortunately is still present!!
    (complete re-install, rather than upgrade)
    Come on Mint, it's about time this known issue was fixed!

    When you have a separate home partition...What happens with all the settings, hidden folders and stuff that usually go there when you change distro? Do they remain there or they're symlinked from somewhere else instead?

    • @EzeeLinux
      @EzeeLinux  7 лет назад

      No symlinks. The /home partition or drive is mounted in from fstab at startup. If you install a different distro and mount the existing home partition/drive without formatting it (erasing data) at /home then all of the data and settings will stay as they were. Very handy if you're doing an in=place upgrade or re-installing the OS. Moving to a different distro and/or desktop entirely can sometimes cause some conflicts with the old settings in home but they are usually easy to figure out.

    • @EzeeLinux
      @EzeeLinux  7 лет назад

      It's your personal preference. I usually tell folks to start with cinnamon providing their hardware can handle it. You need a good video card to run Cinnamon. If you are working with a low memory system with low end graphics than MATE or Xfce is a much better choice,. :)

    Can you show us beginners the easy way (using GUI as much as possible) to install and configure samba on Linux Mint 18.1 to share files and folders or partitions on private network between Windows and Linux machines?

    • @EzeeLinux
      @EzeeLinux  7 лет назад

      Sorry, samba is a pain to set up but I made a video showing the easiest way I know how. ruclips.net/video/n-uSzkGhHDY/видео.html

    • @crimsun7186
      @crimsun7186 7 лет назад

      Samba is usually installed by default on most distributions. The only thing that may not be installed is the file manager integration, which you have to check for the file manager you have and enable "smbd.service" in case your distro uses systemd

    • @EzeeLinux
      @EzeeLinux  7 лет назад

      You can use CloneZilla to create full system backups but it's usually more trouble than it's worth. I have already cover it in this video: ruclips.net/video/O6TxtWGmDHg/видео.html

    • @anarita-15
      @anarita-15 7 лет назад

      So true Joe I used to use CloneZilla but it is not user friendly therefore you need to know how to do it once it is learn it is fine but even then I prefer something user friendly and has a GUI so I went I now use Systemback to make a image of my whole system and so far it has worked so I will keep using it :)

I still like Banshee it works well I can go on Internet Archive on Banshee and that is nice, If I want to listen to Radio i just go on Google to The Main out of Cyprus and Banshee has podcasts too to me Banshee is easier to use

    I love your videos Joe, and then:
    I have had so many problems with 18.1 that I'm pulling hair and thinking about Arch. I mean, if you're gonna dive into Linux (required at any level), then why not start with the core?
    Still on 18.1 Mint with hit or miss gui and it has been so buggy/twitchy since day one that I don't know which way to turn, but this same machine runs solid and smooth on Windows 10! So there's that. Win 10 is not a problem. Linux is always an issue from sound to the video too dark to the damn thing booting with only a mouse pointer. different kernels made no difference, ultimately. I thought the latest kernel had solved my issues since no gremlins jumped out over about a week,. but no one man can ever be that lucky, so back to the sh@t I go....
    Just went though this twice tonight; Hit the power button, wait for boot, choose Linux kernel xxxx, all looks good and you have nothing but a mouse pointer on screen. FOREVER!
    Since a million people ask the same questions in the forums with new topics or other, that makes them unsearchable via the forum search engine! After a couple of pages searching through the 'noise', where is the point?!!! Just the answers please, and nowhere to be found unless you want to look back to 2012..... and you know that ain't relevant for today, so it's a problem!
    Forums suck, take it from one that only goes there on last ditch efforts and listens to kids puke all over my keyboard. It's not fun and it's not learning, it's more like brow beating!
    You are a far better source of info Joe!
    So here are my questions:
    Why does Mint 18.1 not boot to GUI/desktop sometimes? I've checked the logs and it seems the desktop crashes during boot, but with all recommended drivers installed, what options do I have?
    I have pulse audio installed as per the Linux Mint read me file or the documentation section of their website. However, Pulse audio will only boot and reboot to 100% volume! I've done my homework on this, same as always, the answerers are many when I only need one working solution. Who to trust? It's a chronic issue for many.
    I trust you Joe, along with at least a hundred thousand others out there.
    Win 10 has pushed me well over the edge and so back to Linux I went. It's one thing to play around with and yet another to live on the system. I'm having somewhat great difficulty living with it!
    Michael

    I've always hated Totem and Parole. Gnome changed the name to Videos hoping that nobody would notice that it's still a piece of junk. Parole (Xfce's player) isn't much better; consistently crashes if you jump through the video too fast, incoherently minimalist interface, etc.. I always give them a shot, hoping they'll be improved, but I always end up installing VLC and Audacious. I'd rather have client-side decorations / Win95-looking skins than junk software that barely works.

      For / (root) I always go with 30 GiB to be safe. 150 GiB for the OS is too much, unless you're on Windows lol

    • @EzeeLinux
      @EzeeLinux  7 лет назад +1

      I agree that having a huge 150 GB is/ partition is not the most efficient use of space but it won't hurt nothin' and you can always create user accessible fonders over there for file sharing and such. If one were to decide to do that then 25 GB would not be enough. :)

    • @anarita-15
      @anarita-15 7 лет назад

      I too only use 30Gb for operating system and another 30GB for Home Folder and the other leaft space is there in case I need to increase the drive space for the Home Folder and Root / because I am not going to use Linux for gaming therefore it does not need a lot of space for the Home Folder and Root / because I am going to just use about 60 applications which is quite a lot but they do not take up a lot of space plus my other media like my data is going to be on my external hard disk drive with 1TB disk space so 120GB SSD is enough for my Linux needs :)
