Dr Mike, if vit D is low, wouldn't phosphorus also be low? Or does the renal damage leading to reduced excretion of phosphorus (therefore increased serum) overpower the effect of reduced vit D function
Vitamin D deficiency unrelated to renal failure gives low Ca and low PO4. In renal failure when vitamin D is low, the renal failure "wins," giving low Ca and high PO4. I talk about this in HY Endocrine and Arrows PDFs. Always choose high phosphate in renal failure.
