What I enjoy most about your videos is it brings back long-forgotten, memories of my own father in his basement hobby wood shop. I can remember the smells, the dust, the sounds. Also him answering my numerous questions, singing, and the occasional expletive. 😂
Thanks! That's great! It's the same for me remembering my Dad. There's this certain combination of alcohol, turpentine and nitro-cellulose lacquer that will take me right back to his shop!
Very well done! I chuckled to myself when you said this wasn’t a wood carving lesson….. your carving skills are masterful. I enjoyed this video. Thank you. Marti
Tom, you are so funny sometimes....I promise I won't ever believe you know what you're doing 😂😂😂 I love, love, love the picture perfect view of Miss Ella at the end😍I'll never tire of watching her look up adoringly at you as you welcome us into your workshop. Your video tutorials are so well shot and edited, and this one was no exception, if I was local I could spend all day sanding in your shop any day.
It's great to see a small simple piece put back to what it was. Too often, we live with such things and just say, "It's old," and not bother to invest in it. Thank you!
Wouldn't it be amazing to be able to show the original craftsman this video...I'm sure he would be humbled to see you take such care to repair/preserve his work. Your humor (I think I know what I'm doing🤣) and skill are much appreciated by today's lovers of all things vintage/antique.
Really sweet frame! You did a great job on the carving Thom. Even the original creator would agree. Your asst. looked mighty sweet in that final frame. 😁
I love your videos so much. I have learnt much from you. I especially love the footage at the start of your video's and so nice to see Miss Ella, RIP 💕
Your close in shots are some of the best camera work on YT. No detail is missed. I’m not sure I would have the confidence to do this. But your artistry speaks for itself. Not only in your main craft but in your production and “casting”. That little touch at the end was a great note to finish on. The star of the show was framed by this weeks subject. She is so photogenic.
I really admire how you take as much time as you need and apply the same amount of care in working on this simple little frame as you do with larger more elaborate pieces of furniture. It demonstrates your talent but also a respect for all the hand detailing that the original maker put into it's creation. Beautiful job. I always learn so much watching you work
Your work is beautiful! I might be able to refinish a dresser or something, but could never carve as wonderfully as you do. It’s fun to watch as you restore that frame back to the way it was before all of those pieces broke off! Also a side note - I really appreciate that you come in with a cup of coffee when it’s the “next morning”. Somehow it makes those transitions flow better!
You are an artist. I enjoy watching your calm patience as you perform your magic. Today people are in the habit of rushing around, using and discarding products, no thought of preserving. I don’t have the right words but thanks for your continued work and your channel. 😊
Fantastic bit of work. I have an old frame with the same type carved leaves. It had a New York wedding certificate from the 1880s in it. I now have the courage to restore it and replace missing carvings.
I love how you can just look at those pieces that were missing and then carve them. I know it is not as easy as you make it look. I think you are amazing!!
The right tool and your outstanding craftsmanship saved this picture frame. Now only a hunting or landscape picture is missing. Perfect. Thank you Mr. Johnson!
More new items to learn about, shellac sticks and pumice stone powder. I may not ever need to use them myself, but I love to learn about them as I watch your fantastic work. Loved the framed picture at the end.
THAT was AMAZING! I have to admit that as much as I admire your talent, I admire your patience even more! The carving process was exacting and me3ticulous, but I wouldn't even have the patience to even tape up the frame as you did! I suppose that is why artisans such as yourself exist - to accomplish all of the perfection that those of my ilk lack (and can never even HOPE to attain!). Thanks for the amazing video.....
One of the things I always had a hard time explaining is that duplicating something someone else designed, cut, or produced is much more difficult than the long quick cuts of the original carver. The handwork always has personal style, just like handwriting is all different. You do it well.
Ah, dear Ella, pretty as a picture. She was just waiting to pose for us. What a great job, loved the line about not teaching anyone to carve, just trying to convince us that you *can* carve.... Well you convinced me! You wielded those carving tools to great effect, lovely job. Beautifully done. 👍🌿
Tom, Your " looks pretty good " is somebody else's perfect. Fantastic work. I also held my breath when you got out the mallet and big chisel. You are fearless!
I think because of the Style of Carving the frame might be Bavarian of origin, probably from the last quarter of the 19th Century Tom. As always, great job. Very enjoyable to see you working. Cheers
Master Johnson, this was such a pleasure to watch. I had to smile when I saw that band-aid on you thumb; it reminded me of the first time I used a chisel on a project when I was about 12. My father told me to be careful because it was very sharp just as I almost lopped off the tip of my thumb. I eventually had to sand out my blood stain from the project. Again, beautiful work.
Magnificent job! And Tom, you know exactly what you’re doing, truly a master at your craft! And I loved the shot at the end with your faithful friend!🥰
Loved the tip on using pumice in polishing wax! No cutting into the stain……reaching impossible to sand areas of a carving….never would have thought of this technique. Thanks Tom!
So many of your videos I nod along thinking that is how I would do it or would like to do it but when you carve I stop nodding make a coffee and watch. Thanks for sharing.
We have a very old wooden carved frame my husband’s grandfather brought from Germany, in need of repair. We haven’t had it done because we don’t know who to take it to. Yours is beautiful. Your skills are so impressive!
I've been watching your vids almost from the start and I'm always in awe of your skills....but this one for me exceeds all the others. You made a joke about your carving skills but I've loved this vid from start to finish. Your skills sir are outstanding, thank you for sharing them with us !!
I think it looks pretty dang good, Tom!! Amazing job, as always. (I had a moment of comfort seeing your bandaided finger since I always have one, too.) I can't help but hold my breath seeing the carving around the leaf edges - your skill is incredible and mentor-worthy - but, I imagine myself doing it and knocking off one of the fine edges. Such fine and artful skill have you! Thanks for the video.
I’m weird, I know this, but still…I just breath easier when I see clean tools after the job is done. It’s a peccadillo of mine that i have had since my teen years (along with many of my wood working tools that still are in good working condition and still clean). As usual AMAZING PIECE OF WORK. It is not the carving itself, but the "as new" result of your work. Thanks for sharing and have a nice weekend you all.
@@johnsonrestoration yes still here and rallying every Saturday and Wednesday for the past six Weeks had a couple of flesh wounds but otherwise fine! Will mark my being alive with you with on every videos you post🫡
I had to do this with an antique dresser for the wife. Duplicate very similar leaf pieces. I’m envious of your carving knives. Mine was done with a Drimel. Cutting the lines carving more margin with the carvers and sanding and shaping with the barrel attachments. They came out well despite not having a clue till I was well into the project. Learned a lot. Great job !

I am so glad there are still people who want their pieces done right and know how to find a craftsman as yourself to restore their treasures.
Thank you! Me too!
I bet the customers love to see how much work it takes and how you restore their furniture. Another great job!!!
Thanks! I love that they can see these videos!
I’m glad to see that the Quality Control employee carries out her task very conscientiously.
Oh yeah! As long as there's a treat at the end!
Even the shavings you produce when you are carving the wood are beautiful! Gorgeous job.
Loved the end when you framed Ella ❤

Great bond between you and your dog
Thanks!
What a good dog. We've all seen Landseer's Monarch of the Glen, now we have Johnson's Hound of Gorham.
Gorham is an appropriately gory name for a hounded place. Baskervilles: you have been warned.
Wow! I had to look that up - beautiful! I have a photo of Ella that reminds me of that - a majestic look
Yes, and Halloween is Monday!
Oooooh! I love hummingbird moths! The frame turned out beautifully--the finishing touch with Ella was the icing on the cake.
