About 45,000 Nigerian soldiers served in WW2. Many served in India and Burma (Myanmar) fighting alongside British, Indian, Ghurka and other Africans against the Japanese. This was often fighting in thick jungle at close quarters. More than 800 African soldiers died, more than 3,000 were wounded in this fighting. All of them were volunteers and they will not be forgotten.

I can tell you a little about your grandfather's war. The 81st arrived in India in August 1943. One brigade, all Nigerian soldiers, were part of the Chindits and fought in northern Burma. The other two brigades fought in the Arakan campaign, mostly in the valley of the Kaladan river. By January 1945 they had driven the Japanese out and captured two towns from them. The terrain was so rough that everything had to be carried by porters or pack mules. In April 1945 the entire division was withdrawn to India and saw no more fighting before the war ended in August 1945.

The concentration camps were a combination of forced labor camps, human experimentation sites, and internment/torture sites.
Those providing the forced labor assembled weapons and other items for war for the Germans, including providing their own hair as raw materials to make uniforms (yes, some Nazi uniforms were made of human hair).
However the more terrifying part of these camps was the scientific human experimentation. Much of what we know about communicable disease, sterile medical environments, organ transplants, and the absolute extremes which people can survive come from the Nazi concentration camps and Japanese Unit 731. I will not describe the experiments in detail here because the cruelty and depravity are unimagineable, and it's clear that the experimenters had to delude themselves that their subjects were not human in order to perform these experiments - this is also why there's a lot of focus on rhetoric whenever it dehumanizes certain groups - anyone who buys into that rhetoric may perpetrate such unimaginable evils on others.
and just as an aside, most people are aware that the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare (so far) were deployed against the Japanese by the Americans, however most people are NOT aware, that 6 years prior Japan had been the first nation in WWII to use Weapons of Mass Destruction, in the form of biological weapons. Those weaponized plagues were developed by unit 731 and deployed against the Chinese population successfully, and unsuccessfully sent to the United States (the hot air balloons they used to deliver the samples fell over unpopulated forests and were not discovered until much later in the war, with the pathogens being mostly dead by then.).

There were more Americans died during the American Civil War between 1861 and 1865 than most other wars. There were battles were Americans lost anywhere between 20,000 and 30,000 per Battle.. Gettysburg PA, and the battle of Manassas, Virginia were two of the worst. Numbers are rough but the second battle of bull run killed somewhere around 20 or 25,000 people on each side so that’s around 40 or 50,000 people in a matter of just a couple days & Manassas is in northern Virginia..

The only true way to defeat and enemy is to make them a friend. That, I think, is the key to the "long peace". Global economic integration and access to non-government-regulated information via the Internet has allowed all of us, as citizens of Earth, to grow closer to each other and slowly become friends.
We can now easily share each other's food, music, and customs; making it much much harder to "other" each other. Love to my fellow Earthlings in Nigeria from the US. 👩‍❤‍👨🕊

At Korea and Nam, they all fought to stop the inhumane way of sowjet and maoist doktrine... And they are still not done. We will have peace, when commonly accepted human rights are respected in Russia, China, North Korea, Afghanistan, Saudi-Arabia, African countries and so on... Democratic countries have a long way to go to stand together like now in their support for democracy under attack, until this can be a reality... until this day, humanity is and stays at war.

Also, in fact, the USSR lost many more civilians than soldiers. The total losses of the USSR amounted to 27 million people, and only 11 million of them were military, the remaining 16 million were civilians. And in general, the casualty figures were completely different, Germany lost more than 8 million people on the eastern front.

Good video, but let me tell you that since the invention of the car, around 1880 the death toll in traffic has become unbelievable. It's a rough figure and it can be debated, but the average death toll in traffic since 1925, some 100 years ago, has been one million per year. Figure that out.
Nobody seems to think about that when they take part in traffic. And if they think about it, all they can think of to solve the problem, is to build a shell around each and every participant in traffic. Use 1.5 tonnes of steel or use a helmet.

Germany was determined to win or go down in flames. they suffered the worst casualties in the last year of the war as "total war" enacted, anyone who would not fight was executed by flying courts martials - hanging or shooting deserters or defeatists.. they also murdered as many inmates of concentration camps as they could rather than leave them to be liberated by advancing Allies.

Another thing in videos about WW2 it is that they never explain all the small countries significance and they go over it with a name reference and it's sad to do this and not give people the space for their history to be valid at least with one sentence.

The video cuts corners, at the end it omits a few facts. Europe is not a country of peace, and not only in 1956 there was a 10-day conflict (2,800 Hungarians, maybe 500 Soviets dead). The picture is worse than this. Greek-Turkish war in Cyprus." Prague "spring" 1968, Romanian revolution 1989-90, Yugoslav war 1991-1995, bombing of Serbia 1999, Kosovo 2008. And now the Russian-Ukrainian war. Although there was not as big a clash as in the World War, the number of dead is close to 1 million in all in conflict. So the Hungarian revolution of 1956 is only a small part of the cake.

This video doesn’t talk about any deaths in Africa, Sicily or Italy but I’m guessing they’re averaging that in with Europe because America &!the British were fighting Germans that had taken over Northern Africa. Areas in northern Africa have been colonies of Great Britain and France and the Nazis were in North Africa going on their typical killing sprees. The USA help British go over there & take that area back in 1942, 1943, but it took about a year and a half to take North Africa, Sicily and part of Italy.
The autumn of 1943 and I started planning the invasion of Europe and they have everything arranged by November 1943, but it took six months or seven months to get all of the American troops in Canadian troops and the ships planes tanks and everything over to Great Britain in Scotland.
Every month a quarter of 1 million Americans soldiers showed up in Britain & this went on from December through May, and they brought all of the artillery because the United States was the mass manufacture an industrial us back then because only part of our West Coast and Hawaii has been destroyed attacks. Most people don’t ever hear about the ring in the northwest coast, but it did occur. It’s just that there were far more deaths in Hawaii and it involved our military but Great Britain didn’t have the capacity tonight tanks, planes, ships, and all kinds of artillery that the US did so we made everything here and so did Canada with some and Russia had a couple of their manufacturing places left but the United States gave so much weaponry tanks, food to civilians in military and everything from the spring of 1940 until the end of the war, and to Russia, from the autumn of 1941 after they were invaded by the Germans, & we just told our allies that if the equipment was blown off during the war, they could give it back to us at the end of the war. Doubt they did and I doubt America care because everybody was just glad the war was over.!
It was funny because for six or seven months there were a quarter million trips or more from America landing over in Britain in addition to the ones that came from Canada that were fewer. Along with all of the American soldiers, who looked like giants, compared to Europeans, and all of the armor and tanks, and everything they took over there somebody in Wales said.” I swear, I thought the island was going to Saint because there’s no way Great Britain could hold all of these troops at one time and bringing all the heavy artillery armor with them. 😂
