The temple is known for its scenic location and spiritual significance. It was built in 1694 CE by the Ahom King Gadadhar Singha. Umananda Temple, located on Peacock Island in the Brahmaputra River near Guwahati, Assam, has a rich historical background. The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, was originally constructed in 1694 by King Gadadhar Singha, one of the prominent rulers of the Ahom dynasty.
According to local legends, the island was created by Lord Shiva for his wife, Parvati, to meditate. The name "Umananda" comes from the words "Uma" (another name for Parvati) and "Ananda" (meaning joy), symbolizing the bliss of Parvati.
The temple has experienced several phases of destruction and renovation. It was significantly damaged in an earthquake in 1897 and later rebuilt by a local merchant. The architecture of the temple showcases a mix of Hindu craftsmanship and rock-cut sculptures, reflecting the cultural blend of the region.
Peacock Island, where the temple is situated, is not only known for its spiritual significance but also for its natural beauty and wildlife, including the endangered golden langurs. The temple attracts numerous devotees and tourists, especially during the festival of Maha Shivaratri.
