  • Wandering Jew or Purple Heart is the best and easiest to grow house plants which anyone can grow at their home . This is a nice vine to grow as hanging baskets or hanging pots. Here the most perfect way of growing and Caring as well as Propagating method is described in details. Everyone can take benefits out of it by growing them at their homes.
    It is also known as Purple heart or Purple queen.
    Scientific name : Tradescantia pallida.
    Wandering Jew the plans name is given after the jews name who taunted Jesus on the way to the crucifixion and was eventually cursed to walk on earth until Jesus comes for the next time. Therefore , he is immortal. The plant is also considered as immortal and invasive in many countries.
    Therefore, it is recommended that the plant be grown in hanging baskets rather than growing in the ground.
    Soil Quality: It needs any type of soil but that needs to be well drained.The soil must be moist throughout. It should be watered daily but soil should not be soggy.
    Fertilizer: It may be fertilized by applying half concentration liquid fertilizer once in a month.
    cuttings: Take 3 to 4 inches long stem and push it ih the soil or potting mix and water it. keep it for 7 days under shade but diffused sunlight must come in . Within 7 days roots will grow and plants wouid be ready.

    This plant is really formidable... can grow anywhere... if you look at the nodes, there are 2 tiny roots always visible... but nice looking plant, i must say.

    I got a cutting from my friend just normal I don't know I shd keep in hanging pot I kept in normal pot that I am busy that day can transfer it again but I was shocked that it was grown very well now that it was touching the ground lol.. now I saw these video need to keep hanging pot now

    Sir, Inhabe different experience with this wondering jew and Nanuk plant. For long stem in middle the stem start squzzing and then dry, but beforw and after part of dry are plant stemp are normal!!! In middle part of stem dried. I have used Blitox, as it gives good results in die back disease of plant. But with that the issue not resolved. Please give solution

    Sir in place of compost can I use dry cow dung cakes.and one thing more here in hanging pot do we need to do hole in pot ..or hole is not necessary

      Cow dung can't perform as compost.
      Yes hanging pot must have holes at the bottom.

      Maybe i was not clear..... I dont want to put in the water, just on the edge of fountain, but i dont know if it can handle direct sun and hot weather and the winter. Thanks again.

      Nori Novak , Yes! You can put them outside in pots or in your fountains, you have to bring them in before freezing! They love the sun and water!

      Please apply some fungicide while growing the cuttings

      May be you overwater your plants.... I used to do the same mistake... Now I water my plant according to their need and only if they are dry..... And at the same time I have my neighbor whose plants keep on dying coz of overwatering inspite of my advice... Hope it helps your case

      Do not water directly into the crown or root of the tradescantia. Root rot is caused by over watering.
      If you can purchase a self watering planter or place your plant in a saucer and let it soak up the water naturally.
      Edit: for cuttings don't leave them in water for too long before you transplant them.
