I worried about my grandson in our local "sport" BJJ gym for a short time, until he got into a real fight, did a takedown, mounted, and pounded. I had to grab him off the other kid. No worries, most "sport" BJJ technique can be used in real fights. He was only a white belt with one year training.

That’s good. Most sport practioners will be fine against an untrained person. They’ll shoot in for the perfect takedown and get the guy down. The problem with that though is a fight is unpredictable. If a sport guy ends up on his back because he slips or maybe gets taken down by a good wrestler and he’s never trained how to defend punches from guard he’s going to be in trouble. Maybe the sport guy gets grabbed by surprise and has no idea how to escape. Again he will be in trouble.

interesting ,but I have to point out that any completely untrained person can put his head down, run and tackle some one, then sit on top of him and rain down punches? How many times did I see this growing up, long before I had ever heard of "ground and pound"? A larger, more athletic or more aggressive person can usually impose their "game"on some one athletically inferior or unprepared..so what? the essence of self defense is being able to deal with situation when you have all the disadvantages. How many times did i see people be able to stop the first surprise punch (and im talking about face to face) in those same street fights i saw growing up? Not many if any. This kind of situation takes training to deal with realistically and BJJ has given me that edge on several occasions.

Sport jiu jitsu and self defense jiu jitsu are different. I have trained in both and I'll give a subtle example of how they differ. Take a basic triangle choke in sport bjj we were taught to secure the triangle and then reach underneath and hook the individual's leg on the same side as your "bite" leg. The problem with that is as you reach you're setting yourself up to be possibly punched in the face.
Meanwhile in GJJ we are taught to be mindful of the potential punches and if necessary use your arms to defend while shoulder walking back to secure a proper triangle.
When doing sport BJJ Inwas told over and over to never do this in a street fight which told me all I needed to know about sport BJJ

Fact: the way you train is exactly the way you will respond in a real street fight. If you train in bjj sport and when you get in a street fight YOU WILL RESPOND WITH BJJ SPORT. if you think you will respond with bjj self defense or anything else you got another thing coming. that's why sport bjj is quite dangerous for self defense. since most sport bjj gyms in the world neglect stand up and encourage pulling guard, buttscooting, going staight to the ground, that's what they will automatically do in a self defense situation.

Kama Jiu-Jitsu I understand not letting beginners start live training from standing because of the higher injury potential (imo all beginner sparring should be positional controlled sparring) but when u get to blue belt live sparring should start from standing as much as possible if the space is available.
I do think “sport JJ” has its value. It’s always evolving and keeps people interested wanting to come back for more. It’s a fun game. Schools have to just make sure to balance it out and not forget the main purpose people come to learn from a school is for self defense.

  • @Tom_Framnes

    In my utmost humble opinion.
Totally agree, and what is said here transcends any
“ sport/martial specific system” and should be implemented regardless of the arts practiced.
“ it is the practitioner that defines the art” and again, the truth is ready available for everybody to hear if they let go of ego and dogma, as body mechanics and logic( ie common sense) should be applied on all levels when it comes to learning the science of fighting. One needs to be deemed capable, and that includes being able to strike from all positions, as well as learn basic standup/ wrestling/ grappling/ clinch/ground( Especially how to reposition and get back up)
“ Perfect practice makes perfect “
“ self perfection/ self preservation are two sides of the same coin”
“ Everything goes in the land of make believe”
“ nothing more dangerous than the illusion of self delusion”
    -Chinese proverb.
A joy to hear your thoughts on these matter sir.
    Sincere regards.

Me personally I like to train Japanese Jujitsu and Kajukenbo with my BJJ. Also I train Kickboxing. Cross train with your Jiu-Jitsu with other arts and stop saying traditional doesn't work because with out traditional you wouldn't have self-defense or Jiu-Jitsu.

If you aren't learning throws and takedowns and also on the opposite spectrum how to defend them, then your jiujitsu is incomplete... period. How can you do any ground techniques if you can't even get someone to the ground? Also, if you don't know how to fall correctly, your jiujitsu is incomplete. Just like one of my Professors says while pointing to her black belt "Don't try to be a person to get one of these and you can't even fall or get back up safely off the ground"

I agree with what you are saying in the video - I can think of a million reflexes I have built up as a sports practitioner that would get me punched in the face on the street, even from a dominant position for me. I suppose one way to look at it is that there is something missing from the schools' BJJ curriculum. But in my experience 90% of BJJ gyms are also MMA gyms and your subscription is all access - so wouldn't somebody that is primarily interested in self-defense just fill those holes by going to MMA/grappling sessions where strikes are part of training? Do you think that this approach is a mistake on the part of the schools and that they should specifically include self-defense elements into actual BJJ training instead of assuming students will understand the need to also train MMA for self-defense?

The old, sport BJJ vs Gracie Jiu-Jitsu debate lives on!!! What I appreciate about Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (Torrance, CA), and, I'm sure Kama Jiu-Jitsu is that they DO NOT MISLEAD anyone by saying they are something that they are NOT!!! They clearly, at EVERY TURN, let you know that their entire core of learning and philosophy is SELF-DEFENSE FIRST!!! And if you're interested in competing, perhaps their school is NOT a good fit. Unfortunately, that is NOT true of certain schools. I've got absolutely NO problem with ANY other school so long as they are UPFRONT with their new 'potential' students about their training objectives. But to lie to their faces and claim that they teach self-defense is BS!!! For some schools, it's ALL about the $$$-ABOVE honesty. I don't want to get those other comp schools angry at me by naming them because it serves no purpose, but I'd just wish they'd NOT MISLEAD people.

Self-defense was the focus of GM Helio Gracie, yet so many think It is okay to dismiss it. Whether you compete or not has never been the issue. Whether or not you can defend yourself and others against violence on the street or a home invasion. Can you defend against weapons or at least two people is the question? I've had to supplement my bjj with the Self-Defense Unit and GM Helio Gracie's First 40 Lessons. Do what you gotta do to be able to defend yourself and others.

If you're watching this and feeling confused, as to what you actually need to do to make your bjj work in a real fight.
Which this guy does a great job of avoiding talking about the specifics for some reason.
All you need to know from guard is how to break posture, you should be able to completely break your opponent down to where they are not able to hit you.
Your hips should be on top of their hips you squeeze you're knees on the ribs and pull towards you, you get an over hook on one side and control the head on the other side.
That way the opponent can't hit you, from there you'd rather be on your side (not flat), the over hook side should be up, then you can control the other arm and start attacking.
You should look into something called Williams guard in my opinion it's perfect for self defense.
In general any guard where you have an over hook and you and head control with your opponent close to you is pretty good, I think clamp guard and Williams gaurd are the Best, there's also the Irish collar and rubber guard.
Bjj scout made a great video about it called trap guarding.
I remember watching this video a long time ago and feeling frustrated because i didn't know how make my bjj street effective and I watched so many of his videos hoping I'd find the answer, but it's all theoretical.
he doesn't give examples, so I've been researching this for the last couple of years.
Hopefully this was helpful to someone out there. Cheers

Agree with most but disagree with some your points. If you do not have the first clue on how to properly close the distance you could be knocked out before it hits the ground, as I know of a purple belt that this happened to. Any good instructor should include basic self defense like distance management, takedowns, and some striking on the ground. I believe with this basic self defense knowledge that many JJ guys do not know like you said, even someone with 9-12 months of consistent training can take on most untrained guy unless there is a very big difference in size/strength/athleticism. Something I do disagree with you on is that the guard is a bad position for self defense. Closed guard is not an ideal position, however I think that open guard is great for self defense and honestly as I am not very confident with my takedowns I would rather get on my butt and defend from open guard as I am confident with open guard. I think it is much harder than it looks for someone untrained to be able to stomp you and kick you while you are in open guard. But that is my opinion from my experience and am willing to hear your opinion on this.

My friend was attacked by a white belt in the changeroom in highschool.
This guy got offended, and jumped closed guard, on linoleum. Btw, he was about 170lbs, my friend was maybe 110.
So Mr bad sport BJJ ate a few dozen punches to the face before he was gently lowered to his back, where he finally achieved a sweep, and Mount.
There being twenty odd people watching, he didn't ground and pound, and just left, technically winning the fight.

Along with every other martial art.
In the old days I would train jujitsu . we put boxing gloves on and train taking each other down and slipping punches putting our head in the refrigerator so to speak etc. a blue belt that’s doing this is going to do a lot better than one that isn’t that’s for sure. At the same time the new Jiujitsu is the MMA fighter that’s the superhero now. Still love Jiu Jitsu I’m not knocking it it’s just a fact. Wrong question. Not is it 'good enough', but is it 'appropriate'. You covered this somewhat, with the part about not wanting to fight on the ground. Id say the main issue, is that self-defense prioritizes disengagement and escape, while BJJ prioritizes engagement and winning. I think BJJ fosters an inappropriately aggressive attitude, which is why its *always* BJJ guys and 'MMA' knuckleheads, that end up 'forced' to choke out a drunk, or some guy that's never been in a real fight before, while his buddy films it. 99% of fights, could've been walked away from by either party, for the low, low price of a little pride. The wealth of such videos is the primary contributor to the errant notion that its the 'best' martial art and the only 'real' martial art and that TMA, is 'fake'. The best system, is the one with smallest footprint.
